High Surf advisory
The National Weather Service has posted a high surf advisory for the South Oregon Coast through 4 p.m. today.

Sheriff’s fees increase
Along with the turning of the New Year comes new fees at the Coos County Sheriff’s Office in Coquille. According to a Public Service Announcement, Fingerprinting will cost $15; Service fee $36; Service of more than 2 persons at the same address: $20 each; Writs of Garnishment $25; Writs of Execution and Restitution $70; and, deposits on property execution $600. Fingerprinting is by appointment only at (541) 396-3121 ext. 372. New gun permits applications are accepted every Wednesday and Friday between 1 and 4:30 p.m. Renewals can be handled anytime Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding the lunch hour, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.

Cape Meares
The reward to help Oregon State Police in the investigation into this weekend's vandalism to the historic Cape Meares Lighthouse on the North Oregon Coast has now increased to $5,000, according to Oregon Parks and Recreation Department officials. Additionally, The Friends of Cape Meares Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge is accepting donations to help pay for costs to repair the damage previously estimated at over $50,000. According to Chris Havel, Associate Director for Oregon Parks & Recreation Department, the reward fund jumped overnight after their department put in $1,000 to go with donations given to The Friends of Cape Meares increasing their organization's amount to $4,000. The reward is for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible in this case. The investigation indicates on the afternoon of January 9 and noon on January 10, 2010 an unknown vehicle reportedly drove down a blocked maintenance road to the Cape Meares Lighthouse viewing area ten miles west of Tillamook. Several rounds were fired breaking 15 windows of the lighthouse and several pieces of a historic Fresnel lens. Additional rounds were fired into an active Coast Guard light and surrounding equipment. While driving off the maintenance road the suspect vehicle caused significant damage to a grassy area.

BACC IBO Forum

Managing Rocky Shores of Oceanside Parks
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) will seek advice on improving management of rocky shore intertidal areas in Coos Bay area state parks at a Jan. 13 public meeting in Charleston. The meeting will be from 10:30 a.m-12:30 p.m. at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) Boathouse, 63466 Boat Basin Drive. OPRD will introduce a draft of a Rocky Shore Areas Site Management Plan for the area—a plan focusing on management improvements at Yoakam Point State Natural Area, and Cape Arago, Shore Acres and Sunset Bay state parks. Proposed management changes in the plan do not include any new rules or designations. OPRD will use public comments from the meeting to help finalize a plan that guides minor facility improvements, enhances on-site interpretation, and outlines ways to manage recreation in harmony with protecting natural resources. No decisions will be made at the meeting. A 30-day period for written comments will begin Jan. 13. The draft plan will appear online beginning Jan. 6 at http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PLANS/index.shtml along with instructions on how to make comments. H1N1 Vaccine Clinics Scheduled January 13
Coos County Public Health has scheduled an H1N1 flu clinic for the public, on a drop-in basis. The free clinic will be held: Coquille, Wednesday, January 13, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m., Owen Building, 225 N. Adams. The vaccine is free, and no one can pay out of pocket at the clinic, although insurance may be billed for persons whose insurance pays for the administration of the H1N1 vaccine. Most of the vaccine provided will be in the form of shots, although nose spray will be available. The eligibility has been expanded to include everyone, not just priority groups. “Coos County Public Health has plenty of vaccine, and we expect wait times to be short,” reports Lena Hawtin, Immunization Coordinator. Murder
A North Oregon Coast man was murdered late Monday night and Tillamook County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a suspect. The 48-year old victim was killed at a residence in Garibaldi, a small fishing village just north of Tillamook. Forty-eight year old Ronald Dale Lunsford turned himself in after he also allegedly assaulted his wife. He was charged with Aggravated Murder and Assault IV. She was treated and released at a local hospital.

High water
High water over roadways was reported on the North Bend Police logs for late Monday night and early Tuesday morning. At 11:55 p.m., Newmark St. near Ken Ware, “report of high water at location and signs not flipped down warning traffic. Officer checked area and was unable to flip the signs. Street Dept. contacted and will handle.” At 1:20 a.m., Tremont Ave. (Hwy. 101) and State St., “water over the roadway at location. Also manhole cover being pushed up. Public Works and Sewage Treatment contacted and will respond.” According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for 12:58 a.m., 1st & Golden “flooding.”

Gasoline smell
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Monday night, 10:33 p.m., Sherman and Washington avenues. “Anonymous RP reported gasoline smell in the area of Little Theatre on the Bay. Officer checked area advised maybe coming up Sherman. Coming from the 2100 block but unable to locate any apparent gas leaks or anything in the area.”

Road rage
A female driver reported to North Bend Police Monday night, 5:43 p.m., westbound on Virginia Ave., “male subject yelling at her and following her for unknown reasons in Airport Hts. area, subject continued westbound on Virginia from area. According to an entry on the police log, an attempt to locate Road Rage suspect was sent to other police officers.

Stumbling home
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Monday, 4:50 p.m., Broadway at Lombard, a 48-year old male was allowed to continue home after police received a report of “intoxicated male subject stumbling into the roadway walking southbound on Broadway Ave. Officer contacted subject and confirmed he is intoxicated / however is near his family’s home he was en route to.”

Wanted
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Monday, 4:31 p.m., 1200 block Virginia Ave., “officer observed subject in area of Virginia/Harrison, located subject at location.” Forty-six year old Douglas Phillip McCullough, Bandon, was served a valid warrant out of Medford PD for Failure to Appear on Resisting Arrest charge. Second warrant out of Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office for Failure to Appear on charges of Assault IV, Harassment, and Reckless Endangering. He was transported to the county jail at Coquille.

Child
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Monday, 3:09 p.m., Oak St. Park, “reported locking her keys in the car while her 2 year old daughter was still inside. Officer respond with locksmith / vehicle was opened and the child okay.”

Blown tire
A 52-year old North Bend male was cited in lieu of arrest after a North Bend Police officer contacted him after his tire blew Monday, 2:23 p.m., Marion and Virginia. According to an entry on the police log, Mark Allen Ellis, was cited for DWS – Misdemeanor, and warned for Operating Unsafe Vehicle (tire tread).

Traffic grant
With extra funding provided through a traffic grant, North Bend Police gave extra attention to motorists and traffic laws Monday. According to entries on the police log: At 1:16 p.m., Cedar & Newmark, 37-year old Steven Taylor, Coos Bay, cited for Failure to Wear Seatbelt; at 1:32 p.m., Everett & 14th, 28-year old Lynn Thomas cited for Failure to Wear Seatbelt and warned to update DMV with new address; at 1:52 p.m., 16th & Broadway, 19-year old Casey McGrew warned for Improper Wear Seatbelt and Failure to Signal Lane Change; at 2:04 p.m., Virginia & Roosevelt, 19-year old Kyle Earls warned Failure to Wear Seatbelt; at 2:15 p.m., Virginia at Safeway, 32-year old Cutis Green warned Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device; at 2:40 p.m., Virginia & Harrison, 23-year old Samuel Haley warned Failure to Wear Seat Belt and Improper Display; at 2:47 p.m., Connecticut & Sheridan, 55-year old Peggy Sell warned for Defective Lighting, Failure Signal Right Turn, Failure to Wear Safety Belt and Failure to Maintain Lane; at 3:01 p.m., Sherman & Florida, 28-year old Geoffrey Hooper warned for Operating Unsafe Vehicle, “subject denied consent search of vehicle;” at 3:27 p.m., Lewis & Broadway, 23-year old Joseph Bollig warned Defective Lighting BL; at 4:04 p.m., Commercial & Union, 35-year old Lori Smith warned for Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device.

Dispute
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Monday, 7:56 p.m., 200 block No. Kruse Ave., “report of dispute at location.” Twenty-nine year old Brandon Holcomb arrested on a charge of Assault IV – Domestic and Probation Violation. Transported and lodged in the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.

Vehicles
A 56-year old male reported “vehicle entered and items taken” on the 500 block of Commercial, according to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log. At 2:52 p.m., 100 block Anderson Ave., 70-year old female reported “unlawful entry into motor vehicle.”

Gasoline
Two reports on the Coos Bay Police log Monday morning for “Theft of Gasoline.” According to an entry at 7:20 a.m., 60-year old male on the 2100 block Newmark Ave. At 7:33 a.m., 4200 block Lockhart, 40-year old male.

Warrant
A 24-year old male was taken into custody by a Coos Co. Sheriff’s deputy after receiving a call from a 44-year old female stating “son out of control, tearing up the house,” Monday, 11:51 p.m. on Bowron Road. According to an entry on the Sheriff’s log, Joseph Charles Long was found to be wanted on a Contempt of Court warrant for Failure to Appear.

Restraining order
A 34-year old male was arrested Monday, 4:10 p.m., in Charleston, following a traffic stop by a Coos Co. Sheriff’s deputy. According to a news release, Matthew Scott Kohl was an occupant in the vehicle operated by 54-year old Melody Holwuttle, both of North Bend. Kohl was arrested for Violating a Restraining Order between the two. He was transported to the county jail at Coquille. He was also charged with outstanding warrants.

Widespread rain along the Oregon Coast today with highs in the mid 40s to mid 50s and breezy southwest winds 15-25 mph with gusts possible up to 40 mph during the morning hours. Mostly cloudy tonight with scattered showers. Lows in the lower to mid 40s and south winds 10-15 mph. Areas of fog and rain showers on Thursday.

The North Bend Booster Club meets at noon today at North Bend Lanes. Coaches and athletes will be in attendance to talk about their seasons.

After losing all of its 5A Midwestern League boy’s basketball games on the road last season, the Marshfield Pirates have now won two in a row after downing Springfield 59-48 Tuesday night. The Pirates (2-0) led all the way and were up by 23-points entering the fourth period. Sophomore post Dalton Milburn scored a game high 16-points, while seniors Joey Morgan and Kyle Tedder had ten apiece. The Millers (1-1) were led by Britt Hastings’ 12-points, Ellis McNaulty and Nick Dillingham each had ten. The win sets up an early showdown for first place with Churchill (2-0) at Marshfield Friday night in Coos Bay. The Lancers beat Willamette (0-2) 59-49, while North Eugene (1-1) knocked off Thurston (0-2) 52-44. The Pirate girls (0-2) played in the early game of the coed doubleheader and lost 37-20 to Springfield (1-1). Six-foot three freshman Mercedes Russell led the Millers with 15-points, while Marshfield junior Emily Beasley scored 10. In earlier games, Springfield won the freshman boy’s game 38-35, and the Millers took the JV girl’s game 39-20.

Second ranked North Bend fell 83-75 in overtime at South Umpqua Tuesday night to send the 4A Far West League boy’s basketball race lead into a four-way tie. The Lancers (8-3, 2-1) outscored the Bulldogs (9-2, 2-1) 11-3 in the extra period. Dalton Iveans had 17 for North Bend and Sam Lynass added 15. Brookings-Harbor (5-5, 2-1) beat Sutherlin (3-9, 2-1) 66-55 placing both teams at 2-1. North Bend’s girls improved to 3-0 (6-5) with a 65-27 win at South Umpqua (3-8, 1-2). Emily Foster scored 15-points for the Bulldogs and Brooke Davison had 14. Sutherlin (10-2, 3-0) handed Brookings-Harbor (7-3, 1-2) a 33-31 loss, and Douglas (6-3, 1-2) downed Siuslaw (2-8, 0-3) 80-37.

Marshfield hosts defending dual and district champion Thurston tonight in Coos Bay at the Pirate Palace in a 5A Midwestern League wrestling match. The Pirates are 2-0 after wins over North Eugene and Willamette. Jayvee matches begin at 6:30 p.m.

North Bend’s frosh basketball teams play Myrtle Point’s JV teams at Myrtle Crest tonight at 4:30 and 6 p.m.

Southwestern Oregon Community College’s basketball teams are on the road tonight to Albany to play the Linn-Benton Roadrunners in a pair of NWAACC Southern Division games.

The Oregon State gymnastics program is excited to invite fans to the 2010 Pink Out Breakfast and Silent Auction, Saturday, Jan. 30. The event, which runs in conjunction with the fifth annual Pink Out gymnastics meet the night before, is hosted by the gymnastics booster club, the 10.0 Club in the Club Level of Reser Stadium. NFL Combine
Former Oregon State football players Sean Canfield and Keaton Kristick have been invited to the National Football League's Scouting Combine Feb. 24-Mar. 2 at Indianapolis. Both were All-Pac-10 Conference First Team members in 2009. The Scouting Combine is the annual job fair for prospective new NFL players. For six days at Lucas Oil Stadium, players are put through a series of drills, tests and interviews with more than 600 NFL personnel including head coaches, general managers and scouts. Canfield finished his career at OSU fifth in career passing yards with 5,970 and fifth in career touchdown passes with 38. The Beavers were 15-9 (62.5%) with Canfield as a starter. Kristick began the season on the Chuck Bednarik Award and Lott Trophy Watch Lists as one of the top linebackers in the Pac-10. He led the Beavers with 95 tackles.

Meet the Press
It’s “Meet the Press” time for the University of Oregon track team in Eugene today. The Ducks are launching their 2010 NCAA Track & Field Championships ticket sales, and will reportedly discuss the opening of the 2010 indoor season with head coach and Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. A breakout session with student-athletes and staff for one-on-one interview opportunities will follow. Tentative list of student-athletes and staff: Ashton Eaton, Cyrus Hostetler, Luke Puskedra, Andrew Wheating, Keshia Baker, Nicole Blood, Brianne Theisen, Jamesha Youngblood, Asst. Coach Robert Johnson (All-American in the triple jump in 1996 NCAA Championships at Hayward Field), and Asst.
