Oregon Coast News - January 15, 2010

Daily news and sports coverage for the Oregon coast plus a variety of guides and directories useful to Oregon residents and visitors.

Siuslaw National Forest
The Siuslaw National Forest has a new supervisor. Jerry Ingersoll, a 22-year veteran of the Forest Service has been named. The Siuslaw National Forest runs from North Bend north to Hebo on the North Oregon Coast and inland to Corvallis. Ingersoll is currently the deputy supervisor of the Humboldt-Toiyable National Forest in Nevada. However, he spent several years in Washington D.C. helping to finalize the travel management plan involving off-highway vehicle use. He reportedly calls the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, which runs from North Bend to Florence, the “flagship” of off-highway use.

Fishing gone bad
A request of an angler in Douglas Co. for his license and tag Tuesday by a game officer led to a two-hour search on the ground and in the air, but his eventual arrest. Thirty-year old Dallas Ware, of Glendale, wanted on three warrants, threw his fishing pole into the South Umpqua River and fled on foot when approached. He was found hiding in berry vines. In addition to the warrants, he was also charged with Escape, Tampering with Evidence, Fishing without an Angler’s License and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Ware was transported and lodged in the county jail at Roseburg.

Unlawful sex
A 43-year old North Oregon Coast male was arrested Tuesday for allegedly having an unlawful sexual relationship with a 14-year old girl in Douglas Co. Detectives from the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Division arrested Derek Ellwood at a motel he was working at in Garibaldi, just north of Tillamook. He is charged with luring a minor and first-degree online sexual corruption of a child. Ellwood is a registered sex offender following a 1989 conviction for Third-Degree Rape. The investigation began last November. He was lodged in the Tillamook Co. Jail. Investigators say he also traveled to Deschutes and Klamath counties during the past months and are looking for other possible victims.

Vandalism
The Central Oregon Coast community of Newport was struck by vandals recently. Police officers discovered the criminal mischief early Jan. 9th. Windows were broken at businesses along Hwy. 101, traffic cones, garbage cans and even a bicycle were found thrown in the streets and lights were also broken at an ocean side city park.

Brookings’ bears
After three months of lining Hwy. 101 through the south end of Brookings, 25-large bears are now gone. The bears, themed in different colors and poses, were visiting the South Coast from Grants Pass. A Southern Oregon bank actually owns the bears and loaned them to the city in October as part of a “BearFest.” One of the bears was donated to the local high school. Brookings-Harbor H.S. is known as the “Bruins.”

New genetic analysis disputes conclusion about increase in Antarctic minke whales
A new genetic analysis of Antarctic minke whales concludes that population of these smaller baleen whales have not increased as a result of the intensive hunting of other larger whales – countering arguments by advocates of commercial whaling who want to “cull” minke whales. Antarctic minke whales are among the few species of baleen whales not decimated by commercial whaling during the 20th century, and some scientists have hypothesized that their large numbers are hampering the recovery of deleted species, such as blue, fin and humpback, which may compete for krill. This “Krill Surplus Hypothesis” postulates that the killing of some two million whales in the Southern Ocean during the early- and mid-20th century resulted in an enormous surplus of krill, benefiting the remaining predators, including Antarctic minke whales. But the new analysis, published this week in the journal Molecular Ecology, estimates that contemporary populations of minke whales are not “unusually abundant” in comparison with their historic numbers. Using a novel genomic approach, the scientists were able to calculate the long-term population size of Antarctic minkes as roughly 670,000 individuals – which is similar to estimates of current population size from sighting surveys.
