US 26 tunnel
There are four tunnels in Oregon between the coast and the state’s interior valleys. When one closes, it cuts off not only a major motorist connection, but commerce as well via tourism and freight. The Oregon Department of Transportation is planning a $13 million upgrade to the Hwy. 26 tunnel between the North Oregon Coast and Portland later this year, or early in 2011. The project includes relining, new lighting and drainage modifications. Highway officials are not sure how long the work will take, but they are also considering lowering the 70-year old tunnel’s floor by three-feet to better accommodate oversized semi’s. That could take up to six-months. Businesses from Tillamook to Seaside are opposed to the lengthy closure 30-miles west of Portland. Meetings are being held to discuss the project with a special meeting planned for March in Seaside. Other east-west tunnels are located on Hwy. 126W between Florence and Eugene, Hwy. 38 between Reedsport and Drain, and Hwy. 199 between Brookings and Grants Pass.
Electric vehicles
With gasoline prices continuing to soar, more motorists are turning to electrical or hybrid vehicles. Lincoln City is the first community on the Oregon Coast to tap into the trend by installing two electrical charge stations in Taft on the Central Oregon Coast. Travelers needing to charge their vehicles can now do it for free, but the process can take up to eight hours to complete with a 110-volt outlet. That time will be cut in half this spring when the manufacturer, ChargePoint, installs their new 220-volt model. There is no current cost to motorists, but city officials plan to start charge $3 per vehicle by the third or fourth quarter of this year for the service. The installation of the first two chargers cost the city about $3,500, with most of that going to upgrading wiring from a nearby public restroom. Four other chargers will be installed this year.
Yaquina Head
Timothy Fisher, a 23-year federal lands veteran, is the new manager of the Central Oregon Coast’s Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area in northern Newport. Fisher was previously the director of the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center in Ketchikan. Yaquina Head, a former rock quarry, is one of the most-visited locations on the Oregon Coast with its 100-acres, historic lighthouse, interpretive center, and tidal pools that include the only handicap accessible tidal pools on the Coast. Fisher grew up in New England, holds a biology degree from college, and has worked at the Lowell National Historical Park in Lowell, Mass., Big Cypress National Preserve in south Florida, Big Hole National Battlefield in Montana, and the Tongass National Forest in Ketchikan, Alaska.
Florence Sr. Ctr.
Work on the new 5,333 square foot Florence Senior Center is ahead of schedule. The new facility on Kingwood Street is scheduled to be open this spring. The $1.2 million center will be self-supporting when completed. Volunteers are already busy planning fund-raisers to cover the cost of fixtures and furniture for the building that will also house a dedicated wing for the area’s Alzheimer’s Hospitality Program. Helligso Construction, out of Astoria, is the general contractor.
Forest Service fees
Those who visit campgrounds or stay overnight within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest of Southwest Oregon will pay a little more this year for that privilege. The federal government is increasing campground fees from an average of $5 to $10 at its 12-campgrounds, six-recreation rental cabins and four-recreation river bars. That puts the cost of a cabin now between $40 and $60 per night. Officials say those rates are more in line with other federal, state and commercial sites. The funds will be reportedly used for basic maintenance and improvements. More information can be found at www.fs.fed.us/r6/rogue-siskiyou.com.
