Couple murdered
Law enforcement agencies along the South Oregon Coast are looking for a man and woman following the discovery of the bodies of a Bandon couple Wednesday afternoon. Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier says Sheriff’s deputies went to the couple’s residence on Hwy. 42-South, about six-miles east of Bandon, to ask about a truck abandoned in Coquille when they discovered the male and female’s bodies. The wanted man, identified as 23 or 24-year old Gabriel C. Morris, is considered a prime suspect in the slayings, while his wife, 23 or 24-year old Jessica Morris, is considered a material witness. The couple is reportedly traveling with their 4-year old daughter in a silver Ford Taurus with license number YRK052. Gabriel Morris is said to be armed with two handguns. The victims were not immediately identified.
High wind
A high wind warning is in effect from Thursday afternoon, 1 p.m. through 10 p.m. this evening along the South Oregon Coast according to the National Weather Service in Medford. Winds are forecast out of the south at 15-25 mph, but increasing to 25-40 mph late in the morning and afternoon with gusts possible to 55 mph.
House fire
A working smoke alarm alerted a resident to a structure fire in a home on Idaho Drive in the Englewood area of Coos Bay Tuesday night. According to Fire Chief Stan Gibson, the fire department responded at 8:54 p.m. and found heavy smoke and fire coming out the front door of the structure. It took firefighters 20-minutes to bring the blaze under control. The occupants of the home were identified as Mike Hammer and Jolie Hastings. Hastings was awakened by the smoke alarm. The loss of the structure was valued at $130,000 and contents at $50,000. Chief Gibson says their investigation revealed a flue on a wood burning stove became loose allowing heated gases to escape into an attic space where combustibles were ignited.
VA facility
The Coos County Board of Commissioners has called a special meeting Friday afternoon, 3 p.m., to consider a request from the City of Coquille for a $15 million bond measure to help finance the construction of an Oregon Department of Veteran’s Affairs facility. If approved, the 250-bed facility would be built on the former Georgia-Pacific mill site adjacent to Hwy. 42 at the south end of town.
Wave Energy
A water permit application for a ten-buoy Wave Energy test park off of Gardiner in western Douglas County has been filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The deadline for public comment is March 10, 2010. Reedsport OPT Wave Park is proposing erecting an underwater substation pod and transmission cable that will connect with underwater lines to an existing substation located on land at the former International Paper mill site next to Hwy. 101 in Gardiner.
Coos County Public Health Annual Report Published and Available On-line
Coos County Public Health has published its annual report for the last fiscal year, 2008/2009, which describes health factors in the community and how public health programs have contributed towards good health in Coos County. Within the report, county health indicators are compared to state-wide averages, and also state and national benchmarks. Frances Smith, Public Health Administrator, reports that “Coos County is continuing to make progress in some measures: a continuing decline in teen pregnancy, improvements in childhood immunization rates, high rates of breast-feeding, and a reduction in some communicable diseases, such as hepatitis A. On the down side, Coos County continues to have some of the highest rates of smoking related cancers, and high
rates of child abuse and hunger.” Health statistics and outcomes for public health programs are discussed in three broad program areas: Community Disease Prevention & Protection; Chronic Disease Prevention, and Promotion of Healthy Families. Boulders
Large boulders, three per day, are rolling through metropolitan Portland headed for the North Oregon Coast. The 35-ton boulders are being shipped from two rock quarries in Washington State to the Port of Garibaldi where they’ll be placed on the Tillamook Bay north jetty. Its part of a $16.1 million federal stimulus-funded project aimed at improving the treacherous entrance to the bay where 20 fishermen have died since 1992. Over 1,100 boulders will be trucked to the work site until August.
Quake
A small 2.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded Wednesday, 4:51 p.m., 15-miles southwest of Eureka, CA in Northern California.
Car thieves
A vehicle reportedly stolen in Portland on Feb. 5 was recovered in Gold Beach Monday night, Feb. 8th and two suspects were arrested. A third, the driver, escaped into a residential neighborhood. However, on Tuesday morning he was spotted walking on the beach south of the city and ran. Twenty-four year old Justin R. Hoefle, Des Moines, WA, was caught and arrested. He was charged with Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle and Attempting to Elude. The other two suspects were identified as 26-year old Jared W. Garlock, Portland, and 19-year old Michael D. Reyes, Salem. All three were lodged in the Curry Co. Jail at Gold Beach.

According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Tuesday, 8:43 p.m., 100 block So. 10th St., 52-year old female reported, “fight in progress, physical, father and out-of-control 16 year old daughter.”
Probation
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Tuesday, 8:16 p.m., Empire Boat Ramp, 25-year old Ryan Hardisty arrested on a Probation Violation.
Lost
An 8-year old girl returned to Madison Elementary School Tuesday afternoon, 3:02 p.m. after she couldn’t find her way to her new house, according to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log.
Roommate problems
He allegedly dumped a gallon of water over his head and was hitting him with a cardboard box. According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log a “dispute” was reported with a roommate at 3 p.m. on the 200 bock of No. Broadway.
DWS
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Tuesday, 2:27 p.m., Sneddon & Shinglehouse, 52-year old Kay Waldrop arrested for DWS-Misdemeanor and PCS Schedule II. Also cited for Driving Uninsured.
DUII
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Tuesday, 11:06 a.m., Woodland Dr. and Ocean Blvd., 19-year old male reported, “swerving all over the road, cut them off at Newmark & Broadway, not using his signals.” Fifty-two year old Larry Sanborn arrested on a charge of DUII (BAC .26%), vehicle secured at scene, transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
Theft
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Tuesday, 10:47 a.m., 1611 Virginia Ave., “request officer respond for female shoplifter in custody.” Twenty-three year old Hally S. Cannon, North Bend, charged with Theft II, cited and release in lieu of transport. Trespass from all Mall property.

Rain along the Oregon Coast with highs in the lower to mid 50s and winds out of the south at 15-25, but increasing to 25-40 late morning and early afternoon with gusts possible to 55 mph. Rain tonight with lows in the mid 40s to lower 50s and southwest winds 25 to 35, but out of the south at 15-25 after midnight. Rain and wind on Friday.

Terrence Stanley and Joseph Moquino scored 24 & 23 points respectively as Southwestern Oregon Community College (4-5, 9-12) handed visiting Linn-Benton Community College (6-3, 11-9) a 99-92 men’s NWAACC basketball loss in Coos Bay Wednesday night. The teams were tied at 43 at the half, but the Lakers outscored the Roadrunners 56-49 in the second half hitting 54% of their field goals while holding LB to 41%. Coach Trevor Hoppe, “It was a big win, after they beat us in overtime at their place.” Other scorers for SOCC were Lee Van Pelt with 16, Bari Mims 14, and Martin Earnest 11. Southwestern’s women (4-5, 10-10) came from behind to beat Linn-Benton (1-8, 3-16) 51-43. The Roadrunners led 21-16 at the half. The Lakers shot 18% in the first half, but improved to 54% in the second half. Heather Spring scored 11, while Brianna George and Kelly Millager each had 10 to lead SOCC. Southwestern’s teams play at Lane in Eugene Saturday.
Blazers
Coming off an ugly loss to Oklahoma City at home, the Portland Trailblazers bounced back and won at Phoenix for the first time since 2004, 108-101 Wednesday night in NBA basketball. Steve Blake had 20 points and 12 assists, both season highs to lead the Blazers. Portland next plays the LA Clippers on Tuesday, Feb. 16th.

Marshfield boy’s basketball team will play North Eugene HS this Friday, February 12 for the Midwestern League Title. The last time Marshfield won the league title was 1981. Our athletic director, Bryan Trendell was the star of the 1981 team who won the league title and went on to finish 3rd in state. The first 500 individuals who come to the game will receive a FREE hamburger and chips with the purchase of a game ticket. Pirate fans, let’s pack Pirate Palace and bring back the atmosphere of 1981.
MHS Booster Club
The Marshfield Booster Club will meet today, 11:30 a.m., at Abby’s Pizza in Coos Bay. The Club will recognize a male and female Athlete of the Week with a certificate and action photo. The athletes were nominated by Winter Sport’s coaches and then voted on by the Booster Board. Wrestling Coach Kris Davis nominated Jake Browning. “Solid win against Springfield wrestler. Second at Cottage Grove Inv. (In the Championship finals match he dislocated his elbow to end his season). He has also done a great job in the practice room. He has been working very hard.” Girl’s Basketball Co-Head Coach Doug Miles nominated Kara Young. “She scored 19 points against Churchill and has begun to become more aggressive on both ends of the court.”

As the seasons prepare to wind down for prep basketball in Oregon, the playoffs are just around the corner. The Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) playoff brackets were set in advance. The Midwestern League boys #3 team will have a play-in game on March 3 at Mid-Willamette #3. The winner plays at Intermountain #1 on March 6. The MWL #2 plays at Intermountain #2 on March 6. The MWL #1 hosts the winner of the Intermountain #4 at Northwest Oregon #3 (3/3) on March 6. The winners on March 6 advance to the 5A State Tournament at McArthur Court, March 10-13, in Eugene. In the boy’s Far West League, #3 plays at Skyline #2 on March 3. The winner goes to the Valco #1 on March 6. FWL #2 plays at the Cowapa #1 on March 6. FWL #1 hosts the winner of Valco #3 at Cowapa #3 (3/3) on March 6. The March 6 winners advance to the 4A State Tournament at Gill Coliseum, March 10-13, in Corvallis. In the girl’s FWL, #3 hosts Sky-Em #3 on March 2 with the winner at Skyline #1 on March 5. FWL #2 hosts Cowapa #2 on March 5. FWL #1 hosts winner of Skyline #3 at Capital #2 (3/2) on March 5. Oregon State plays at Arizona State, while Oregon is at Arizona in Pac-10 men’s basketball tonight. The women’s teams will host the “Desert Schools” tonight in the Willamette Valley. They’ll all switch opponents for games on Saturday.
OSU bb uniforms
The Oregon State baseball team unveiled its set of uniforms for the 2010 season on Tuesday on the third floor of the Valley Football Center in Corvallis. Oregon State players Carter Bell, Jared Norris, Rob Folsom, John Tommasini and Sam Gaviglio modeled the new set for reporters, which include four new jerseys and a holdover from last season. This is also the first season the Beavers will wear an entire set of Nike uniforms while the team will also play with Nike equipment.
Track Season Ticket Renewal Deadline Friday
Friday is the deadline for 2010 track and field season ticket renewals. Those fans who renew, or purchase new season tickets by Friday will have their NCAA Championships and Prefontaine Classic ticket orders filled before general public orders. Season tickets for the 2010 outdoor season range in price from $24 to $65. Fans interested in renewing or purchasing season tickets may go on line at www.goducks.com, call 541-346-4461 or visit the Athletic Ticket Office in the Casanova Center. The 2010 home schedule is one of the most attractive ever at Hayward Field. The NCAA Track & Field Championships and a match-up against defending men’s and women’s national champion Texas A&M at the Pepsi Team Invitational are but two of the highlights. The Ducks will also host UCLA in a men’s dual meet for the third straight year and the Eugene Marathon will be held in conjunction with the Oregon Relays, presented by Oregon Community Credit Union, and, for the first time, will finish on the track at Historic Hayward Field. The Ducks open the outdoor season with the Oregon Preview on March 20, the first of six home meets in 2010. The other five home meets are the Pepsi Team Invitational on April 10, the Oregon-UCLA dual on April 17, the Oregon Relays, presented by OCCU, on April 30-May 1, the Oregon Twilight on May 8 and the NCAA Championships June 9-12. All-session passes for the four-day NCAA Championships, priced between $40 and $80, are also currently on sale.
