Morris
Autopsies performed Saturday on two Bandon homicide victims showed they “died from multiple gunshot wounds to various part of their bodies,” according to a news release from Coos Co. District Attorney R. Paul Frasier. Law enforcement agencies across the nation are still on the lookout for the suspect, 33-year old Gabriel C. Morris, along with his 33-year old wife Jessica Marie Morris and their four-year old daughter Kalea Morris. The FBI has joined the search after it was reported the family was seen in the San Diego, CA area, and recorded on a surveillance camera video at a business in Meza, AZ on Feb. 10. Gabriel Morris has family in Louisiana and Florida. A Material Witness warrant for Jessica Morris was issued Friday. Gabriel Morris is the son of one of the victims, 62-year old Robin Anstey. The other victim is Anstey’s boyfriend 48-year old Robert Kennelly. Morris is believed to be armed and dangerous. The National Center for Missing and Endangered Children has joined in the effort to locate Kalea. “By going to missingkids.com and going to the Oregon section of the website, you may view a poster that has been prepared by the center. I am informed that the center has already sent thousands of copies of this poster across the country to help in the search.”

Crab landings
Charleston remained number one for commercial Dungeness Crab landings through the month of January among Oregon’s coastal ports according to the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission. Executive Director Nick Furman says commercial crabbers through the first month of the year landed 20,398,501 lbs. coast wide, while Charleston’s share came in at 6,017,368 lbs. The Boat Value for Charleston through December and January is $10.6 million. Adding a “Local Economic Impact” with a x2 multiplier, and the total value hits $21.2 million. The Commercial Dungeness Crab Season runs from December through August; however, the “Lion’s Share,” is normally caught during the first two months of the season.

California Salmon Runs
A report in the “Oregon Anglers Bulletin” this month states “California’s once most abundant salmon runs came in at a new all time record low in 2009.” The article refers to a report from the Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC) that shows 39,530 natural and hatchery Sacramento River Fall Chinook adults were estimated to have returned to the Sacramento River basin for spawning. “The 2009 adult escapement estimate is the lowest on record and continues the declining trend in SRFC escapement despite the 2008 and 2009 closures of nearly all ocean Chinook fisheries south of Cape Falcon…” on the North Oregon Coast. The article goes on to state that the last three years of salmon returns have each set new record lows and coincide directly with three of the highest years of Delta water diversions in the Central Valley. “Delta pumping kills juvenile salmon migrating through the Delta to the sea.” The Central Valley stocks typically provide 90 percent of all king salmon harvest off California and 60 percent of all king salmon harvested off Oregon in both sport and commercial fisheries. The Pacific Fishery Management Council report can be found at: http://www.pcouncil.org/salmon/salsafe09/salsafe09.html.

Utilizing state of the art computer modeling and laser based terrain mapping (lidar), the outcome will reported create new and more accurate tsunami evacuation maps for the entire 362-mile long coast. Other communities chosen include Yachats, Waldport and Seal Rock on the Central Coast, and Rockaway Beach, Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler on the North Coast.

Whitty seek re-election
Nikki Whitty announced last week she is seeking re-election to the Coos County Bosard of Commission Position #2. According to a news release, “I love my job”, said Whitty, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Coos County.” Whitty spent many years working in the Oregon State Capitol and was the South Coast Area Manager for CCD Business Development Corporation before running for the County Commission. Whitty went on to say “I had no idea that the experience I gained in my previous positions would be so important and helpful to the job of County Commissioner. I had the opportunity to become acquainted with so many people that are in a position to help out or offer advice when a constituent needs assistance.” “I learned early on that trust is the most important asset you can have and you don’t earn that trust overnight, you earn it over time by working hard, being honest, and following through” said Whitty. Whitty says one of her strengths is assisting in bricks and mortar type projects. Financing for those projects are available, they create good paying construction jobs and the new buildings live on long after the project has been completed. If it is a growth project then the opportunity for job creation is there. Whitty's experience working with budgets brought about changes in how the County budget is developed. “In 2000 the Commissioners changed the way the county budget is prepared”, said Whitty, “and in 2006 we saw the handwriting on the wall and realized our revenue was likely to drop. The general fund budget for 2009-2010 is nearly $4 million less than it was in 2006-2007. The County provides valuable services for all county residents in the area of public safety, veterans’ services, public and mental health, assessment and taxation, recording and elections and for residents outside city limits we provide planning services. The county workforce creates an economic engine that helps support local businesses.” “I’m excited about the future”, said Whitty, “we are beginning to see and hear about some activity, but we have much work ahead of us in the area of public safety, job creation and retention, energy opportunities and in general keeping our heads above water in light of possible revenue decreases”. I want to be part of our solution and by working together, I’m confident we can get the job done!” Whitty will be holding a Meet and Greet at Benetti’s Restaurant on March 11, 2010 from 5 pm to 7 pm.

MHS bxb
They weren’t even born yet the last time Marshfield won a Midwestern League boy’s basketball title. Their only connection with that team was in the form of the Coos Bay school’s Athletic Director Bryan Trendell who played on that Pirate team the finished third in state that year. Marshfield Principal Greg Mulkey, after the home team wrapped up the title with a 56-52 win over North Eugene last Friday in the Pirate Palace, stated over the public address system during a short trophy presentation ceremony, that it was only fitting that Trendell present the trophy to the Pirates. Second year head coach Jesse Ainsworth, a Marshfield grad himself, accepted the trophy on behalf of the Pirates and quickly gave it to his star guard Kyle Tedder, and the rest of the team huddled around the senior with the trophy raised high. After accepting congratulations from families, friends and fans, the Marshfield players took turns snipping the net down from the east basket. Ainsworth made the final cuts and hoisted the net high. He also shouted out thanks to everyone for attending and then told them they are not through yet and invited them all back next Friday when the Pirates (8-2, 12-8) host one of four teams in the 5A Midwestern League tournament. The win over the Highlanders (7-3, 13-7) clinched the home court advantage for Marshfield. Churchill (6-4, 14-7) hosts Willamette (0-10, 7-15) Tuesday and Springfield (6-4, 11-10) hosts Thurston (3-7, 10-10). The Pirates will get to choose who it wants to play out of the two winners in Coos Bay on Feb. 19th in the Final Four. Three teams will come out of the Final Four to determine the league’s three teams into the OSAA state playoffs which begin March 3rd for the No. 3 team, and March 6th for the No. 2 and No. 1 teams. The game with the Highlanders, who beat Marshfield in the first round 59-51, was close throughout. The Pirates jumped out to a 17-11 lead after one, but North outscored Marshfield 14-7 in the second to forge a one-point advantage at half-time, 25-24. Both teams scored 11 in the third setting up the final 8 minutes. It wasn’t until late in the period that the Pirates were finally able to move in front for good. Tedder scored 15 for the game, 12 in the second half, but it was the play of sophomore Colton Thurman off the bench that sparked the team. Thurman had nine-points in the second half and 13 for the game, including a tough breakaway lay-in chasing down a long pass from Tedder following a defensive steal. Junior Evan Griffin stroked three 3-pointers, and senior Joey Morgan was tough the entire game on the boards. All of North’s players scored, led by sophomore Demerick Taylor who had three, three’s and 17-points. He hit a smooth three up top with time running out, but North had to foul and Tedder and sophomore Dalton Milburn converted their late free throws to seal the win. Marshfield’s JV team, with seven players, beat the Highlanders 61-56. North Eugene’s girls beat Marshfield 60-25 in Eugene Friday night. Emily Beasley led the Lady Pirates with eight-points. Thurston won the girl’s title (10-0, 17-2), while Willamette (7-3, 17-4) and North Eugene (7-3, 15-5) tied for second, followed by Springfield (4-6, 9-9), Marshfield (2-8, 4-16), and Churchill (0-10, 3-15).
