Health Report
Coos County is tied for fourth in Oregon with an obese population of 30%, that’s according to a summary of a report released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that researched health records of not only every county in Oregon, but more than 3,000 across the United States as well. The report ranks each county in the state in six basic classifications: Mortality, Morbidity, Health Behavior, Clinical Care, Social Economical Factors and Physical Environment. The five-complete counties along the Oregon Coast, Curry, Coos, Lincoln, Tillamook and Clatsop, all ranked low for most areas, except Curry Co. which was ranked second for “Physical Environment.” Coos Co. was ranked 16th. Coos Co. also tied for third statewide for “Percentage of Binge Drinking,” 14th for “Teen Birth Rate,” and 12th for “Percentage of Children in Poverty.” Out of the 33 ranked counties, Coos came in 25th for Mortality, 25th for Morbidity, 30th for Health Behavior, 26th for Clinical Care, 24th for Social Economical Factors and 15th for Physical Environment. Curry Co. - 30th; 10th; 8th; 23rd; 25th; & 2nd. Lincoln Co. - 26th; 26th; 29th; 22nd; 23rd; & 20th. Tillamook Co. - 22nd; 20th; 19th; 27th; 7th; & 11th. Hoisted
A 33-year old male was hoisted from a 50-foot commercial fishing vessel off of Cape Blanco near Port Orford Wednesday by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station North Bend. The man began complaining about chest pains was lifted off the F/V Shenanegan at 1:33 p.m. Due to poor visibility, caused by heavy fog on shore, the man was transported to the Air Station where he was transferred by ambulance to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay. A 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Coos Bay at Charleston was also dispatched to the area.

Tabled
Because of the lateness of the hour, the City of Coos Bay’s Urban Renewal Agency, which is the City Council and met following the regular Council meeting Tuesday night at City Hall, two items were tabled to future special meetings. City Manager Rodger Craddock says the Agency members wanted more time to hear the presentations and to discuss proposals regarding design ideas and landscaping for the “Ped-way” the vacant open area on Hwy. 101 downtown next to Bay Area Appliances, and a the Railroad Museum’s request for funds between the bay and Front St., across from the McDonald’s restaurant.

Seismic upgrade
The City of Coos Bay has been notified by the State of Oregon about the awarding of a $1.5 million grant to construct seismic upgrades to the elevated City Hall building over Central Avenue in the downtown area. City Manager Rodger Craddock says the upgrade was projected at a cost of more than $2.3 million, but the funds from the State were the maximum amount available under the grant. Part of the work will include stabilizing interior walls, removing the tile off the roof and installing a lighter roof. Craddock says they hope they can begin the renovation work as early as this summer. The City Hall building houses the city government offices and Council Chambers as well as the Police Station.

Yellow Cab
Bay Area taxi service Yellow Cab has modernized its dispatch system that reportedly now allows for greater fuel saving costs, fewer empty cabs and less paper work. Owner Dick Leshley says they’ve added Mobile Date Terminals in the cabs as well as new computers and software in their dispatch office that eliminates the need for the old CB-style radios for communications. The new system also allows a dispatcher to see exactly where all active cabs are located at any given time. Yellow Cab recently added 10 new vehicles to their fleet that are reportedly more fuel efficient.

Sand rail
The driver of a sand rail that killed two people on the North Oregon Coast in September of 2008 has been sentenced to prison by a Tillamook County Circuit Court Judge. David Rieman, of Yacolt, WA, was found to be operating the sand rail near Pacific City under the influence. His blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.27, more than three-times Oregon’s legal intoxication limit of 0.08. His sand rail collided with another sand rail killing a 56-year old male and 19-year old female. He pled guilty to Criminally Negligent Homicide, Assault and Drunken Driving. Judge Rick Roll sentenced him to 2½ years in prison and he will lose his license for eight years.

Teen sentenced to life
A 19-year old Douglas Co. teenager was sentenced to life in prison for the 2007 killing of a Canyonville man. Austin Montgomery Clark, of Days Creek, was convicted of killing Kevin Jonathan Omann on Sept. 8, 2007 with the blunt end of an ax.

Family dispute
A report of a “Family Dispute” Tuesday night, 11:12 p.m., 700 block No. 9th St., resulted in the arrest of a 34-year old male. According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log, Joseph A. Smith was charged with Assault IV – Domestic Felony and transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.

Wanted
According to an entry on the Coquille Police log for 6:38 p.m., 1500 block of Dean St., “located wanted subject.” Twenty-eight year old Shawna M. Higgins was arrested on charges of PCS Schedule II & Theft III.

Accident
A 37-year old male was cited for DWS – Violation, Driving Uninsured and Unsafe Passing on the Right following an accident at 3rd & Central in Coquille Tuesday afternoon. According to an entry on the police log for 4:44 p.m., Jason Luckman was cited.

Indecent
It’s known as the “panhandler corner” in Coos Bay. First & Johnson. According to an entry on the police log for 11:25 a.m., a 36-year old male complained about “Indecent Exposure, Subject urinating in public.”

Restraining order
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Tuesday, 11:24 a.m., 7th St. & Koos Bay Blvd., “Violation of Restraining Order.” Sixty-six year old Sharon D. Arbuckle, listed as the victim, was arrested on NBPD warrant for Criminal Mischief II and Reckless Endangering. Transported and lodged in the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.

Assault
According to an entry on the Coquille Police log for Tuesday, 10:52 a.m., 1100 N. Knott St., “Assault/Violation Restraining Order.” Thirty-nine year old Oscar B. Reedle arrested on Assault II & Violation Restraining Order. Transported and lodged in the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille. Victim listed as a 51-year old female.

Probation
A report from a father about a son who was allegedly drinking while on probation Tuesday night, 7:22 p.m., led to an arrest on the 1500 block of Grant St. According to an entry on the North Bend Police log, “son is on probation and has been drinking. Also subject has friends over and they are refusing to leave.” Twenty-five year old Shaune Meilike, North Bend, was taken into custody and transported to the Coos Co. Jail in Coquille on the Probation Violation charge.

Marijuana
A report of two teenage males allegedly smoking marijuana at the top of the stairs on Hwy. St., led to an arrest Tuesday afternoon in North Bend. According to an entry on the police log, officers responded and located subjects walking northbound on Sherman Ave. Twenty-one year old Cory Andrew Corrigan, Bandon, arrested for Delivery Controlled Substance, Schedule II within 1,000 feet of a school and Endangering Welfare of a Minor. Also contacted was a 15-year old male.

License seized
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Tuesday, 10:16 a.m., 2500 block Oak St., 18-year old Terrie Catlett, North Bend, cited for DWS – Violation, Failure to use Seat Belt. Subject’s driver’s license seized, warned for Defective Lighting.

Wanted
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Tuesday, 9:55 a.m., 2500 block Sherman Ave., “officer located wanted subject.” Thirty-three year old Joshua Jason Szumski, North Bend, arrested and transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.

Family dispute
A “family dispute” Tuesday night, Crown Point Road, led to the arrest of a 23-year old male. According to an entry on the Coos Co. Sheriff’s log for 10:54 p.m., Kyle Cox was charged with Felony Parole Violation and transported to the county jail at Coquille.

School bus
The school bus was reportedly stopped on Stock Slough Road with its red lights flashing and students unloading when a driver passed it on the left. According to an entry on the Coos Co. Sheriff’s log, the blue Mini Cooper didn’t stop at 4:32 p.m., Tuesday. A Sheriff’s Dept. employee attempted contact via telephone, no answer at the residence, but will retry.

GPS
A resident on Empire Lane reported the theft of a Garmin Nuvee model #205W, GPS, valued at $128.88, from an unlocked vehicle to the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, 3:25 p.m. According to an entry on the Sheriff’s log, a charging cord and mount were left behind. “Neighbor’s also missing.”

Burglary
A 45-year old female was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille Tuesday, 12:54 a.m., after a deputy conducted a follow-up to a reported Burglary. According to an entry on the Sheriff’s log, Jody Sears was charged with Theft I, “dog returned to owner.”

Patchy fog then clearing along the Oregon Coast with highs in the mid 50s to lower 60s and east winds 5-10 mph, shifting to the northwest late this afternoon. Mostly cloudy tonight, patchy fog forming, lows in the lower to mid 40s and southeast winds 5-10 mph. Mostly to partly cloudy on Friday with highs in the 50s to 60s.

MHS Boosters
The Marshfield Booster Club will meet Thursday, 11:30 a.m., Abby’s Pizza in Coos Bay. Along with coaches and athletes discussing their current seasons, the Boosters will present certificates for the male and female Athletes of the Week, as nominated by their coaches. Those recognized this week were both nominated by swim coach Kathe Stufflebean, “boy's swim - Garrett Swafford district champion 100 freestyle, team caption leader in and out of the pool! Girl's swim - Kirby Neale district champion: 100 fly 2 second time drop!”

MWL BXB tourneys
Jayvee and Frosh 5A Midwestern League basketball teams will compete in end of the season tournaments on Saturday in the Eugene-Springfield area. Marshfield’s JV and Frosh teams will be at Willamette. Frosh play at noon against No. Eugene and 3 p.m. verses Willamette. The JV team plays Willamette at 10:30 a.m. and Churchill at 1:30 p.m. The Lady Pirate JV girls play at Thurston, 10:30 a.m. vs. No. Eugene, and 1:30 p.m. vs. Churchill. The JV 2 team plays at No. Eugene against Willamette at noon, and Springfield at 3 p.m.

MHS bxb
Marshfield Boys Basketball will host Thurston High School this Friday, February 19 starting at 7 PM with the winner earning an automatic berth to the OSAA State Playoffs. The Marshfield Boys Basketball squad, coaches and others would like to thank everyone for coming out last Friday, and based on popular demand, the Marshfield Booster Club will once again be giving away hamburgers and chips for the first 500 paid adult admissions. The Booster Club will also provide students with a free bag of popcorn. Additional burgers can be purchased at the concession stand for only $2. The Booster Club will accept donations from anyone wanting to help offset the cost of the free offer with proceeds continuing to support the team during its march to the state playoffs this season.

Pac-10 bxb
Oregon State hosts California and Oregon hosts Stanford in Pac-10 men’s basketball in the Willamette Valley tonight. The Beaver women are at Cal and the Duck women at Stanford. They’ll switch opponents on Saturday.

Musgrave
He’s the quarterback credited with leading Oregon from its poor past into the bowl circuit among collegiate football teams. Bill Musgrave took the Ducks to the 1989 Independence Bowl, followed by the 1990 Freedom Bowl. He came out of Colorado and was a fan favorite from 1987 through 1990. With 18-years of NFL coaching experience, Musgrave has now been named an assistant head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He remains the team’s quarterback coach, where he’s been credited with the development of Matt Ryan the 2008 NFL offensive rookie of the year. He’s also one of several former Duck signal callers active in the National Football League. Norv Turner, who backed up Dan Fouts in Eugene, is San Diego’s head coach, and Sheldon grad Chris Miller is the quarterback coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Brenner
She belted six home runs in five games to open the 2010 collegiate softball season, and for that, Oregon State sophomore Mary Claire Brenner was named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week by the conference. Brenner, from Jesuit High School in Portland, was 8-for-16 with 16 RBIs and set a Beaver record with three homers against Southern Utah. OSU went 2-3 at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, AZ. OSU is at the Aggie Classic at College Station, TX this weekend.

OSU gymnastics
The Oregon State gymnastics team is ranked 3rd in this week's standings according to GymInfo, the official NCAA national rankings for women's gymnastics. No. 3 is the highest ranking for the Beavers since the week of March 30, 1992, when they were also ranked third. Oregon State is one of six teams from the Pac-10 Conference to be ranked in the top 25, and is one of three Pac-10 teams in the top 10. Stanford is No. 8 and UCLA is No. 9 in this week's standings.

LaMichael James
Oregon tailback LaMichael James was arrested Tuesday in Eugene on charges of Domestic Violence involving his 22-year old girlfriend at their Springfield apartment complex. She claimed James grabbed her neck during an argument and pushed her to the ground. The 20-year old was lodged in the Lane County Jail on misdemeanor charges of Menacing, Strangulation and Assault. He finished his freshman season of football as the nation’s seventh-leading rusher. James joined the track team this spring and is off to a fast start. The sprinter ran the 60-meter dash at last weekend’s indoor meet in Seattle in 6.77. That was the fastest among the collegians at the Husky Classic, and third-fastest in the Mountain West Sports Federation indoor track circuit for 2010. It’s unknown if the Texarkana, TX native will run at the MPSF Championships, also in Seattle, on Feb. 26-27.
