Veteran’s home
With an annual payroll estimated at $10 million dangling like a carrot in a race, the City of Coquille submitted an application to the Oregon Department of Veteran’s Affairs last week in pursuit of a 250-bed nursing home to be built on 10-acres at the south end of town. It is a race with four other counties in the running: Douglas, Jackson, Klamath and Linn. In order to secure the designation, Coos County voters would most likely have to approve a $15 million bond measure that would increase property taxes by .22-cents per $1,000 of assessed value a year for 20-years. The nursing home, proposed for the vacant old Georgia-Pacific mill property, would have 200 long-term units and 50 Alzheimer’s beds. The facility would create an estimated 300 jobs in the high unemployment county. The Coos County Board of Commissioners have put their support behind Coquille’s effort, and says if the application is approved, they will hold public hearings before placing the bond question on this November’s ballot. A decision is expected to be reached in March.
NOAA
Washington’s federal delegation has turned up the heat on the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) decision to move its Marine Operations Center-Pacific (MOC-P) from the Seattle, WA area to Newport on the Central Oregon Coast. After the Yaquina Bay site was awarded the bid, over three ports in the Puget Sound area, Washington’s congressional delegation cried foul and the General Accountability Office (GAO) ruled in a protest by the Port of Bellingham that NOAA had violated its own rules about building in a flood plain. That led to a response by NOAA that it would review its decision and announce its findings by May 28th. However, that did not stop NOAA from signing a contract to have work begin on the construction of their new site at South Beach. Washington’s politicians are now demanding that the work should be halted. A spokesperson for Oregon U.S. Senator Ron Wyden says the Washington delegation’s efforts are now “getting uncomfortably close to political interference.” The contract asks the site, adjacent to the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center, to be ready for NOAA by July 1, 2011.

3A Tourney
A proposal has been submitted to the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) to move the 3A boy’s and girl’s basketball tournament to Marshfield and North Bend high schools beginning next year. The tourney is currently held at Willamette University in Salem. North Bend Athletic Director Boyd Bjorkquist is behind the effort, but has been working with Marshfield AD Bryan Trendell on the proposal. According to Trendell, the championship side of the bracket would be held at the Pirate Palace in Coos Bay and the consolation games at North Bend. The tourney involves eight girl’s and boy’s teams, the same numbers that participate in the Les Schwab Tires South Coast Holiday Basketball Tournament held at MHS each December. Marshfield has hosted previous state basketball tournaments in the past. In the late 60s the boy’s A-2 tourney, and in the mid 70s the girl’s AA tourney. The Pirate Palace also previously served as the site of the state’s mid-sized schools wrestling championships before they were moved to Portland’s Memorial Coliseum. The two schools Booster Clubs will be involved in manning the tournament, and Trendell says the proposal is supported by the state’s 3A schools and the community as well.
Duck
One day after Oregon football coach Chip Kelly stressed discipline and responsibility to his players following recent run ins with the law, a 19-year old redshirt freshman linebacker was cited for MIP, Driving While Uninsured, Improper Turn and Failure to Maintain a Lane. Linebacker Kristian Kiko Alonso was cited early Saturday morning and released. On Sunday, Kelly dismissed wide receiver Jamere Holland from the team after he posted an expletive-filled statement on Facebook thinking Alonso had been dismissed from the team and blasted the move in his posting. Three Duck players were involved in a brawl on campus that left one in the hospital and two off the team. Running back LaMichael James is under house arrest for an alleged domestic abuse charge involving his girlfriend, and another player was reportedly linked to a theft of a computer laptop from a fraternity.
Stunts & Gymnastics
In front of 1,272 fans at McArthur Court, the Oregon stunts and gymnastics team placed first at the Duck Invitational with a score of 239.97 out of a possible 266. Azusa Pacific took second with a score of 236.19 and Ohio State placed third with a score of 225.59.
Blazers
The Utah Jazz (36-19) came from 25-points behind Sunday night to beat Portland 93-89 in overtime in an NBA game at the Rose Garden. Brandon Roy led Portland with 23-points. The Blazers (32-26) play at New Jersey (5-51) on Tuesday.
