High Wind Warning
The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning from 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon through 4 a.m. early Friday morning along the South Oregon Coast. Winds are forecast out of the south at 30 to 40 mph with gusts possible up to 60 mph.
Salmon
Last year biologists estimated 122,000 salmon would return to the Sacramento River of California. They were off by about 80,000 fish. A record low of 39,500 chinook were actually recorded in the basin in 2009, but those same biologists are optimistic that 245,500 will return this year. That’s still far short of the 750,000 counted in 2002. The Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC), which uses the figures predicted from models, meets in March in Sacramento to decide commercial and recreational salmon quotas and seasons along the West Coast. Some feel the forecast of higher returns will result in a small season off of Oregon. The cause for the decline is still openly debated. Fishermen blame large pumps used to move water in the Central Valley delta for the loss of juvenile salmon, while farmers believe its poor ocean conditions. Commercial and recreational salmon fishing generated an estimated $17 million to the West Coast economy in 2009, the second lowest on record.
Healthy forest fires
A speaker attending the “Forest Health in Oregon : State of the State” conference at Oregon State University in Corvallis says with a changing climate there’s a good chance that forest fires in the Pacific Northwest will become larger and more frequent, but John Bailey, an associate professor in the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management at OSU adds, “that’s just fine.” Bailey said fire is a force that should be understood, often welcomed, used as appropriate and more frequently incorporated into long-term ecosystem management. “Forests historically had more fire across much of Oregon, and they would love to have more today,” Bailey said. “Burning is a natural ecosystem process and generally helps restore forest ecosystems. It’s ironic that we spend so much money to stop fire, because we should learn to see fire as more of a partner and not always an enemy.”
