Oregon Coast News - March 2, 2010

High Surf
A high surf advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. this afternoon along the South Oregon Coast.

It could happen here
The massive earthquake that rocked Chile this weekend triggered tsunami warnings up and down the West Coast of the United States and though wave heights only increased a foot or two above tide level, it could be much different next time. And, says one expert, we’re still not ready. Patrick Corcoran, an Oregon State University education and outreach specialist, has been working with coastal communities for several years, helping them prepare for the predicted catastrophic earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. He said West Coast residents shouldn’t be lulled into a false sense of security because the Chilean quake didn’t directly affect the Pacific Northwest. “We should look instead to the damage in Chile, because that is what could happen here,” said Corcoran, who coordinates the Coastal Storms Program for OSU-based Oregon Sea Grant. “With these distant earthquakes, the Northwest receives no infrastructure damage and hours of warning for potential tsunamis. The same earthquake centered a few miles off our own coast could be devastating.” During the last 10,000 years, there have been nearly two dozen earthquakes of magnitude 8.5 or higher off the Northwest coast, scientists say, and the threat from a major event and subsequent tsunami is very real – and probably overdue. During the last several years, earthquakes and/or tsunamis have struck the Indian Ocean, Haiti and now Chile – providing a grim reminder of what could happen here.

Morris
Jessica Morris, the wife of the man who allegedly killed two Bandon residents Feb. 8th, was arraigned in a Coos County Circuit Court Monday afternoon and charged with Hindering Prosecution. She is also being held as a Material Witness to the homicides and her bail has been set at $1,025,000. According to District Attorney R. Paul Frasier, “Both matters have been set over for further proceedings on Thursday, March 4, 2010.” The 33-year old waived extradition from Virginia where she was captured Feb. 22nd along with her 33-year old husband Gabriel C. Morris by U.S. Marshals. She was returned to Coos Co. on Saturday. Gabriel Morris has refused to waive extradition and is next scheduled to appear in a Virginia courtroom on March 20, 2010. He allegedly shot to death is 62-year old biological mother and her 49-year old boyfriend before fleeing the area with his wife and four-year old daughter. The Coos Co. Grand Jury is set to hear the matters involving both Gabriel and Jessica Morris on Wednesday.

Overdue family
A Roseburg area family that is known to take drives into the mountains is overdue and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has begun a search. According to a news release, 40-year old Daniel Magness, 30-year old Melissa Magness, and 4-year old Jared Lee Magness were last seen Sunday at their residence in the Green District. They are believed to be driving the family’s 1994 Chevrolet extra-cab pickup with a burgundy-colored canopy and silver brush guard on the front. Oregon license RTK307. The boy has some medical issues requiring medication. Anyone who has seen the family or has information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (541) 440-4471.

Cell phone law
Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers' enforcement of Oregon's new cell phone law banning most uses of mobile communication devices while driving a motor vehicle noted nearly twice as many citations issued during February in comparison to the number issued during January. Updated enforcement statistics indicated OSP troopers issued drivers 72 citations and 233 warnings during February. During the new law's first month, OSP troopers issued 41 citations and 259 warnings. In total, OSP troopers have cited 113 drivers and warned 492 others since the new law went into effect January 1, 2010. With some exceptions, it is unlawful in Oregon for a driver to use a cell phone without using a hands-free accessory while operating a motor vehicle. Violation of the cell phone law is a primary offense, meaning that a police officer may stop a driver solely for observing the violation, and is a class D traffic violation with a minimum base fine of $142.

Fishing vessel
A 65-foot salmon fishing vessel, which would have been 100 years old next year, was raised from the bottom of Yaquina Bay on the Central Oregon Coast last Thursday after it scuttled itself and sank at a Port of Newport dock last November. The F/V Helen McColl leaked an estimated 30-gallons of diesel when it went down in the middle of the night. The Port, at a cost of $26,000 raised the vessel with the help of a crane and had it towed to the International Terminal where an excavator scrapped the wooden fishing vessel.

The accredited high school provides 5.5 hours of instruction 220 days a year leading to high school credits, high school diplomas or, in the case of high school graduates, skills improvement to prepare for higher education or employment. Thirty teams qualified in both the boys and girls. Hidden Valley won the two head-to-head matches with the Lady Bulldogs by a combined eleven pins to win the state title.
