Fire
A working fire alarm in an RV alerted a couple Sunday night and they escaped a burning structure at 92252 Cape Arago Hwy. about 9 p.m. According to a news release from Charleston Fire District Fire Chief Mick Sneddon, the RV was owned by Machelle and Mark Hubbard. The fire was caused by deteriorated electrical wiring in the ceiling of the RV. The couple was able to escape with their family dog. Losses were estimated at $1,500 for the RV and $5,000 for its contents. The American Red Cross responded to assist the two.
Miss Coos Co.
Miss Coos County 2010 is Bebette Solorzano, a student at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay. Solorzano was crowned during the annual scholarship pageant Saturday night at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts at SOCC. The 1st runner-up is Kristina Hossley, a student at North Bend High School. Named Miss Coos County Outstanding Teen 2010 is Caitlin Snuggerud, a student at NBHS, with 1st runner-up Barbara Burdge, also from NBHS. Grace Roderick is Miss Coos County Outstanding Princess. Other honors went to: Lynn Stulz, NBHS, Non-Finalist Interview; Amanda Hartley, SOCC, Non-Finalist Talent; Lynn Stulz, Personal Dedication Award; Jordan Hampton, North Bend, Betty Golden Memorial Scholarship; Bebette Solorzano, Miss Gongenality; Nikki Wright, Volunteer of the Year; and, Checkerberry’s Flowers & Gifts as the Volunteer Business of the Year. The Miss Oregon Scholarship Pageant will be held July 4-11 in Seaside.
Quake
A couple of earthquakes struck in the Cape Mendocino area of Northern California Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.8-magnitude quake occurred at 3:40 p.m., 23-miles west to southwest of Eureka , CA in the Pacific Ocean . That was followed by a 4.5-magnitude quake at 12:46 a.m., 43-miles southwest of Eureka.
Stranded
A 58-year old male from Phoenix , Oregon was rescued Friday afternoon after he became stranded on the face of a cliff north of Gold Beach near Euchre Creek. According to a news release from the Curry Co. Sheriff’s Office, members of the county Search & Rescue team were dispatched about 1:40 p.m. Shannon Bealer initially reported he wasn’t able to climb up or down and was running out of service on his cell phone. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station North Bend responded and lowered a rescue swimmer to Bealer’s location. He was air-lifted off the rocky cliff side and transported to a landing area along the highway. Bealer reported he had been hiking the Coastal Trail from Brookings north and thought it continued on the other side of the rock he was stranded on.
SCINT
Thirty-four mature marijuana plants were seized by narcotics officers with the South Coast Interagency Narcotics Team (SCINT) during the execution of a search warrant Friday, 9:30 a.m., at a residence on Johnson Creek Lane near Bandon. According to a news release, “nobody was home at the time of contact. The case will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office.”
Pacific Power
One of the wealthiest men in the world says he invested in public utilities because most of the operating costs can be passed on to the users. Get ready for another rate increase from the Warren Buffet owned Pacific Power. The Portland-based electrical utility has petitioned the Oregon Public Utility Commission for a 20% rate increase next year to cover the cost of new transmission lines and equipment. That will be on top of the 1.5% Pacific Power plans to already pass along to their customers to pay for the removal of four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River of South Central Oregon and North Central California to improve salmon runs and farm land irrigation. Pacific Power serves 553,000 customers in Oregon.
Sea lion pups
Two sea lion female pups have been shipped from Southern California to their new home in captivity at Newport on the Central Oregon Coast. The two, both about nine-months old, were found stranded and each blind in one eye, preventing them from hunting. They were at first taken to the Fort MacArthur Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, CA, which turned them over to the staff at Oregon Coast Aquarium in South Beach. The OCA had six sea lions, but two died. The other four are in their 20s, nearing the end of their life cycle in captivity. One pup has a cataract, while the other suffered an injury to its eye. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is an educational-tourism facility which opened in 1992.
Hatchery center advisory committee to meet March 8 in Alsea
The Oregon Hatchery Research Center Advisory Committee will meet March 8 at the Oregon Hatchery Research Center, 2418 E. Fall Creek Rd. Alsea, OR. The meeting will last from 9:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The agenda includes discussion on coastal avian predation, fish passage, hatchery supplementation, reports on completed, active and proposed research projects, and other business relating to the operations of the OHRC. The OHRC Advisory Committee advises the senior scientist on activities and functions related to the operation and maintenance of the OHRC. The Committee consists of 15 members who represent the following interests: federal government, local government, conservation, sport fishing, commercial fishing, tribal, resource producers (agriculture, timber, and gravel), watershed councils, education, the public-at-large, and science-at-large. The OHRC is a cooperative research project between the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Oregon State University. The OHRC’s mission is to develop an understanding of the mechanisms that may create differences between hatchery and wild fish and devise ways to reduce and manage the differences so that hatcheries can be used responsibly in the conservation and use of Oregon’s native fish. The meeting is open to the public and an opportunity for public comment is scheduled. United States Power Squadrons Education Department has removed all restrictions on the teaching of members only USPS Advanced courses to the public. Start your Nautical education with the Boating Safety course starting at 6:30 PM March 8th in the Squadron Building at the Charleston Boat Basin. This course qualifies you for the Oregon Boater's Safety card and boat insurance discounts with many insurance companies. The two hour classes are on Monday and Thursday evenings for two weeks. According to an entry on the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office log for Thursday, 7:01 p.m., Weyerhaeuser Lane, a 17-year old female was listed as the victim of an alleged rape, “en route to DHS Referral, Investigation continuing.”

Five people were reportedly involved in a dispute behind the 2100 block of Marion St. early Sunday morning in North Bend . According to an entry on the police log for 6:10 a.m., “neighbors fighting, female hitting the male.” Two females and three males, between the ages of 25-32 were listed.

A 41-year old female was warned by a North Bend Police officer Saturday night, 9:22 p.m., Sherman Ave. , for allegedly “walking southbound on west bound side of Sherman exposing her breasts to traffic.” An officer located Andrea Dixon and warned her for Indecent Exposure.

According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Saturday, 7:18 p.m., 34-year old Robert Stookey was warned for Failure to Maintain Lane and using cell phone while driving.
Burglary
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Saturday, 2:24 p.m., 1900 block Newmark Ave. , 7-Eleven, “possible location of wanted subject.” Forty-one year old James H. Jarrett, Coos Bay , was arrested on charges of three-counts of Criminal Trespass, Burglary I, Theft I and Burglary II. Transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille. A burglary was reported on the 2100 block of Clark St. earlier at 11:27 a.m., and a “theft from garage” was reported on the 2200 block of Commercial St. at 6:47 a.m.

At 9:28 p.m., “intoxicated male attempting to get keys to drive. Parties contacted RP/left in cab with keys will return them to subject in AM. At 10:03 p.m., patrol check at Bastendorff Beach . At 11:02 p.m., “subject driving recklessly on beach near bon fires.”

Drunk
An anonymous male called the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office Saturday, 2:08 p.m., to report he drove by the Charleston Sanitation building on Wilshire Lane and saw a male laying in the grass about three-feet from the road. “He is breathing.” Charleston Fire, Bay Cities Ambulance and law enforcement were summoned. “Victim intoxicated, sleeping, refused medical, given ride home by Coquille Tribal Police.” Forty-four year old male involved.

Mostly cloudy and rain along the Oregon Coast today with highs in the lower 40s to lower 50s. Breezy with winds from the northwest at 5-10 mph, but increasing to 15-25 mph. Rain tonight with lows in the lower to mid 30s and north winds 15-25, but shifting to the northeast at 10-15 mph then the southeast 5-10 mph after midnight. More rain on Tuesday.

North Bend advanced to the 4A OSAA Girl’s Basketball Tournament in Corvallis March 10-13 with a 53-42 win over visiting Astoria Friday night. Haley Dunham had 10 rebounds in the first half for North Bend. Brooke Davison had 28 points on the night. She made 3 three point shots and was 7 of 7 from the free throw line. Taylor Weidman had 11 points, including 2 three point shots. The Lady Bulldogs will play Cottage Grove Wednesday night, March 10, 8:15 p.m., in the final game of the first round. The winner will then play the winner of the Cascade and La Pine game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the championship semi-finals. The loser will play Thursday morning, 10:45 a.m. against the loser of the Cascade-La Pine game in the consolation semi-finals.

Marshfield jumped out to a 23-7 lead in the first period at Pendleton Saturday night in an 5A OSAA boy’s basketball game, but the Buckaroos came back and outscored the visiting Pirates in each of the remaining periods to force an overtime and then went on to win 75-71 to advance to this week’s state tournament at McArthur Court in Eugene. Senior Kyle Tedder, the Midwestern League’s MVP scored 34, and got Marshfield off to a great start with three, three’s in the opening period. Junior Evan Griffin kept pace with three of his own, but he was held scoreless the rest of the way as Pendleton mounted its comeback between its two all league players Devon Polhamus and Lamar Fairly. The two scored 23 and 21 respectively for the Bucks. But, it was Tyler Simpson who surprised the Pirates. The post player only had two-points at half-time but was big in the second half with three blocked shots and finished with 13-points. Marshfield sophomore Dalton Milburn scored 16-points, but the Pirate’s point production dropped off from there with six from sophomore Colton Thurman, four from Cody Dew, and two from Joey Morgan. Marshfield ended the season with a 13-10 record, while Pendleton improved to 20-5. The MWL’s other entry, North Eugene also failed to make it to state. The Summit Storm, the fourth place team from the Intermountain Conference upset the Highlanders at home 57-56 in double overtime. The IMC got three teams into the Final 8, while the MWL went 0-3 in the state playoffs with Thurston’s earlier loss to Corvallis .

A foul on the rebound of a last shot with no time on the clock led to a pair of free throw by Newport ’s Drew Dinwoodie, and a 53-52 win at North Bend in the 4A OSAA boy’s basketball playoffs Saturday night launching the Cubs into the 4A state tournament at Corvallis this week. Newport , the No. 3 team from the Val-Co League, will play Marist in the final eight. Jake and Logan Lucero each scored 14 for the Bulldogs (20-4), who trailed by eight points at half-time.

Oregon State lost at home to Washington 82-70 in the final regular season men’s basketball game Saturday night. The Beavers (14-16, 8-10) will play Washington in the Pac-10 Tournament in Los Angeles on Thursday. Oregon’s men beat Washington State 74-66 Saturday. The Ducks (15-15, 7-11) open the Pac-10 Tournament against the Cougars on Wednesday in LA. The Duck women finished the season Sunday at Washington. Oregon (16-14, 7-11) fell to the Huskies 62-53 and will open the Pac-10 Tournament Friday against USC. OSU’s women’s team finished the regular season with a 50-45 win at Washington State on Sunday. The Beavers (10-19, 2-16) will open the Pac-10 Tournament in LA on Thursday against Washington.

Oregon State won two out of three at the Surprise Baseball Tournament in Surprise, AZ over the weekend. The Beavers beat UC Riverside 10-3 on Thursday, lost 6-4 to Arizona State on Friday and beat Utah Valley 9-0 on Saturday. OSU’s game against Cal Poly on Sunday was cancelled due to rain. The Beavers (7-3) will next host their Spring Tournament with Utah and Portland on Friday, March 12 in Corvallis.

Oregon swept all four games at Fresno State this past weekend. The Ducks won on Friday 7-2, swept a doubleheader from the Bulldogs on Saturday (8-4, 6-2) and ended the series on Sunday with an 8-3 win. Oregon (9-4) will host Seattle in a four game series in Eugene beginning Friday.

Oregon opened the San Diego Classic softball tournament Friday with a 1-0 win over Long Beach State. The Ducks then fell to San Diego State 5-2, but came back with a 2-0 over Cal Poly on Saturday. Rain cancelled games with San Diego and Fresno State. Oregon (14-5) hosts Boise State this Saturday in Eugene.

Oregon State’s softball team opened the CSUF DiMarini Invitational in Fullerton, CA Friday with a loss to Northwestern, 12-3, but came back and won three-in-a-row over UC Davis (5-3), Pacific (7-2) and Loyola Marymount (5-3). The final game with host Cal State Fullerton was postponed on Sunday. OSU (8-11) hosts the Cascade Clash in Corvallis against North Dakota and Boise State beginning Friday.
