Jobless rate
Across the board, the unemployment rate for the five complete counties on the Oregon Coast improved between the months of December and January according to figures released by the State Employment Dept. However, the jobless rate also was higher than it was a year ago in four of the five counties. Coos Co. – The rate dropped from 12.7% in December to 12.3% in January, a full percentage point higher than January 2009. Curry Co. – The rate slipped from 11.8% in December to 11.7% in January, but also was significantly lower than the 15.1% realized a year ago. Lincoln Co. – The rate improved from 9.9% in December to 9.7% in January, but higher than the 9.5% in January 2009. Tillamook Co. – The rate improved from 8.6% in December to 8.5% in January, still higher than the 7.6% in January 2009. Clatsop Co. – The rate dropped from 9.0% in December to 8.8% in January, also higher than the 7.6% last year.
Consumer complaints
For the fourth straight year, complaints about phone companies topped the Oregon Consumer Complaint List compiled by the state Attorney General’s Office. New to the list this year were complaints about mortgage brokers and loan modifiers.
Light ordinance
The Port Orford City Council, in an effort to improve star gazing on the South Oregon Coast, passed an ordinance last month that reduces the amount of light that shines into the sky at night within the Curry County city’s limits. City franchise lights are not impacted by the new ordinance as they are already within compliance. However, it does impact private property owners and businesses with night time security lighting.
Inmate presentation
It was “reality,” not on TV, but in person when an inmate from the Lincoln Co. Jail on the Central Oregon Coast at Newport visited with high school students at Newport on Feb. 24th. Inmate Brandon Boyanovsky, wearing leg chains, handcuffs and an orange jail jumpsuit, accompanied a deputy to the school to provide a first-hand experience of what it is like to be incarcerated as part of the consequences to a decision he made. According to a news release, “The topics discussed were primarily focused on drug awareness, the judicial system and the negative physical, social and emotional impact of drug abuse and addiction.” The Sheriff’s Office is promoting the presentation to other schools and even club meetings as part of an awareness campaign.
Coastal Oil Spill plan
Plan applies to facilities and pipelines; Comments due April 9. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is seeking comment on Kinder Morgan Energy Partners proposed revision of its oil spill contingency plan. The plan outlines how the company will prepare for emergency responses, provide emergency response resources and conduct cleanup operations with appropriate agencies to their facilities and pipelines in the event of oil spill on Oregon’s navigable waters, including the Willamette and Columbia rivers and Oregon coastal waters.
Hatchery research center seeks three members for Advisory Committee
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Oregon State University announced today they are seeking three candidates for the Oregon Hatchery Research Center Advisory Committee. The 15-member committee advises the OHRC Senior Scientist on activities and functions related to the operation and maintenance of the OHRC. The committee meets quarterly, with meetings scheduled for June 14, Sept. 20, and Dec. 13, 2010. Three positions on the committee, one each representing commercial fishing, watershed councils and sport fishing, will open May 2010. Members are appointed for three-year terms, and may be reappointed for a second three-year term. Candidates must submit a letter of interest by April 16, 2010. The letter should specify why the applicant is interested and provide three references. ODFW and OSU representatives will finalize their selections prior to June 1, 2010. Members of the Advisory Committee represent the federal government, local governments, conservation groups, sport fishing groups, the commercial fishing industry, tribes, resource producers (agriculture, timber and gravel), watershed councils and education. Two members represent the public-at-large and four represent the scientific community. The OHRC is a cooperative research project between ODFW and OSU. The center’s mission is to develop an understanding of the mechanisms that may create differences between hatchery and wild fish, and devise ways to reduce and manage the differences so that hatcheries can be used responsibly in the conservation and management of Oregon’s native fish. Drain
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the City of Drain have signed a planning loan agreement for $90,000. The planning focuses on identifying improvements required to the city’s wastewater treatment facility. Improvements will allow the city to operate in compliance with the facility’s wastewater discharge permit.
Smoke alarms
Oregon State Fire Marshal Randy Simpson urges residents to check their smoke alarms when changing their clock to Daylight Savings Time Sunday, March 14th. Many Oregonians have smoke alarms with ten-year batteries so the old saying, ‘Change your clock, change your batteries' may not be correct for many households.
Southwestern seeking distinguished alumni nominees
Southwestern Oregon Community College is currently inviting nomination applications for the Distinguished Alumni Award. This award is an honor to recognize a Southwestern alumnus who has helped to better and contribute to our local community. Selection is based on contributions to his or her profession or society. For the past decade, Southwestern has honored individuals who made use of their educational experience at Southwestern in a variety of meaningful ways. Its exemplary group represents leaders whose time, talents and skills make a difference in the lives of others. Past winners include lofty company, such as an accountant, physical therapist, a state representative, an attorney and teachers. Last year’s Distinguished Alumnus is Mary Stricker, a student at Southwestern from 1984-86 and Southwestern Library employee (librarian; Director) from 1990-2003. Stricker has continued to tutor students online since her retirement. The 2008 award winner is Fran Worthen, a groundbreaking coach, athlete and model community member. Peggy Goergen, the 2007 award winner, is a former Southwestern Curry County Dean. The 2006 recipient Chuck McKay, is President of McKay’s Markets, a staple among South Coast grocery store chains. The 2005 recipient, Cynthia Ball, is Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Administration for Coos Bay Lumber Company. Peter Ruppe, the 2000 award winner, is Global Product Director for Nike Inc. The winner in 1998, Tsianina Means, was the 1997 ESPN Fitness America champion. Peter Sorenson, an Oregon state senator and attorney in Eugene, earned the award in 1994. They were chosen for achieving excellence in their professional and personal lives and for touching the lives of others with their contributions. Some are living and working on the South Coast and others have pursued endeavors in communities across the country. Past nominees are reconsidered each year. To be considered for the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus, the nomination form and supporting information, such as resume, newspaper clippings, awards, letters of recommendation or any other information that may help the selection committee make its decision, must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on April 16, 2010. According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for early Tuesday morning, 4:58 a.m., Medford PD arrested 33-year old Sean Hoover on a CBPD warrant for Probation Violation on an original charge of DUII. “Awaiting extradition to the Coos Co. Jail.”
Hot coffee
She allegedly threw hot coffee on him. According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Monday, 9:44 p.m., 1100 block of Anderson Ave., a 34-year old male claimed his girlfriend threw the coffee. An early entry at 8:40 p.m., same address, “incomplete 911. Determined to be a dispute.”
Kidnap
A 45-year old male was arrested Monday night, 6:48 p.m., on charges of Assault IV – Domestic, Kidnap I and Interfering with a 911 call. According to an entry on the Coquille Police log for 240 Hwy. 42, Hwy. Deli Mart, Gene McLaughlin was arrested, transported and lodged in the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille. The victim was listed as a 32-year old female.
DUII
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Monday, 1:43 p.m., 400 block Newmark Ave., 60-year old Montie Kyle arrested on charge of DUII & Reckless Driving following a report of a “Hit & Run traffic accident.”
Warrant
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Monday, 1:27 p.m., 24-year old Leon A. Luck was arrested on a CBPD felony warrant for Failure to Appear on a charge of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. Transported and lodged in the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
Knife
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for early Tuesday morning, 12:21 a.m., Virginia & Everett, “employee of 7-11 advised male subject came in, put knife on counter and made some statements and left.” Thirty-six year old John Maham was trespassed permanently from 7-11.
Debit card
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Monday, 8:54 p.m., Mill Casino, “reported someone used her debit card at Mill Casino without her permission. Value $2066.99. Under investigation, Theft/Fraud.”

Guard Brandon Roy scored 19-points as the Portland Trailblazers handed the visiting Sacramento Kings an 88-81 NBA loss at the Rose Garden Tuesday night. Portland plays at Golden State on Thursday.

North Bend opens the OSAA 4A girl’s basketball tournament tonight at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis against No. 1 ranked Cottage Grove. The Lady Bulldogs and Lions are scheduled to play the final game of the first round at 8:15 p.m. The 5A and 6A boy’s and girl’s tournaments are also getting underway in Eugene and Portland. Championship games will be played Saturday night.

North Bend’s Brooke Davison was named the Player of the Year in the 4A Far West Basketball League. The senior led the Lady Bulldogs to second place in the league and a berth in the 4A OSAA State Tournament. Named to the All League First Team was senior Alexandra “Super” Mateski. Senior Emily Foster, junior Taylor Weidman and junior Haley Dunham were selected to the Honorable Mention All League Team.

Oregon plays Washington State tonight in Los Angeles in a play-in game to the Pac-10 men’s basketball tournament. The Ducks swept the Cougars this season.

Marshfield’s softball team, under coach Floyd Montiel, opens the 2010 season March 18th, 5 p.m., at North Bend. Coach Montiel says the Lady Pirates have had a good turnout this spring, but once again had to make cuts. “We are carrying 12 on varsity and 13 on JV. I am assisted on the varsity by Jenny Howland and Bill Otton is coaching the JV.” Top returners are Senior Rise Campbell, 1st team all-league Outfielder and Honorable Mention All-State, Sophomore Catcher Kara Young, Honorable Mention All-league and the following letter winners - juniors Samantha Sundet and Alisha Charitar, and Senior Katherine Nicholls. “We are a young inexperienced team with only three seniors and only two players that had significant varsity innings a year ago.” 9th grader Brianne Johnson has been pitching well in the off season and will share the duties in the circle with Sam Sundet. Due to an injury sustained during basketball season, promising Sophomore Ashton Morgan will miss the season and Sundet will have to play a number of innings at 3rd. Many positions are still up for grabs but Young will be a constant behind the plate, while Campbell and Nicholls will be in the outfield and Alisha Charitar will take over for four year starter and perennial all-leaguer Brianna George at Shortstop. “The girls are working really hard and have been getting better every day. We are looking forward to a competitive year and the chance to gain experience and improve as the season progresses.”

Marshfield’s baseball team opens the 2010 season March 15th at home against Myrtle Point. Head Coach Quintin Hall says the Pirates are anxious to get started. Marshfield returns 10 players off last year’s team. “We are lead by four seniors. Elliot Aurdahl (P, 1st, OF), Ryan Campbell (SS, P, OF), Cody Dew (OF, 1st), and Josh Perkins (1st, P). We also have 4 Jrs, 2 Soph, and 1 Fresh. We are looking forward to contending for a playoff spot. To do so we must play great Defense and be consistent at hitting when in scoring position. We have a quality pitching staff and solid infield and outfield. A majority of the players play 2 or more positions. I have high hopes of these young men to be great student-athletes and even better role-models to the youngsters who are playing.” Marshfield’s games will be broadcast live on the student radio station, KMHS, AM 1420.

North Bend’s girl’s tennis team opens the season Tuesday, March 16th, 3 p.m., at Marshfield. Coach Simmie Muth says they have a great turnout of 23 players. “We only lost two from last year’s squad and have added a lot of talent. We are returning 10 of our top 12 and are adding two freshman that have played a lot of tennis and a foreign exchange student from Germany that is also a very strong player. We are looking forward to a strong season with a lot of experienced tennis players and a young bunch of brand new players and with great attitudes and hard work ethic. Ducks to Send 25 Entrants to NCAA Championships
Oregon will have 25 entries for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as the NCAA announced the field for this weekend’s event in Fayetteville, Ark., Monday night. The women’s entries encompass 11 individuals and two relays, while the men have six individuals and both relays. The 16 women’s entries include three slated to run two individual events: Nicole Blood in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, Amber Purvis in the 60 and 200 meters and Jordan Hasay in the mile and 3,000 meters. The women will additionally have Keshia Baker in the 400 meters, Brianne Theisen in the pentathlon, Zoe Buckman in the 800 meters, Anne Kesselring in the mile, Mattie Bridgmon in the 5,000 meters, Mandy White in the 60 meters, Melissa Gergel in the pole vault and Jamesha Youngblood in the long jump. The Duck women will also run both the 4x400 and distance medley relays. Oregon was the top seed in the women’s distance medley relay, while Blood and Theisen were No. 2 in the 5,000 and heptathlon, respectively. Hasay was third in the mile, Youngblood was third in the long jump and the 4x400 meter relay squad was also seeded third. Andrew Wheating’s top seed in the 800 meters and Ashton Eaton’s top seed in the heptathlon led the list of nine men’s qualifiers. The men will also have Elijah Greer in the 800 meters, Mac Fleet and A.J. Acosta in the mile and Luke Puskedra in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Like the women, the men will run both the 4x400 and distance medley relays. In addition to Eaton’s and Wheating’s top seeds, the Ducks were also atop the distance medley relay list, Fleet was No. 2 in the mile, Greer was third at 800 meters and Acosta was fourth in the mile.
