College professor given Community Contribution Award
Southwestern Oregon Community College Professor Ray Daniels has been given the Community Contribution Award at this year’s Oregon Association for Career and Technical Education (OACTE) Annual Conference. More than 400 people from high schools and colleges attended the conference in Sunriver on April 15. The Community Contribution Award is given to someone whose contribution has made a difference to career and technical education and has been sustained over time. Their effort strengthens the school’s connection to the workplace—especially outside of their professional duties. Recipients may or may not be professional educators. Based on the strong Welding and Fabrication program that Daniels has taught at Southwestern Oregon Community College and the long established relationships he has with employers and high school programs, Southwestern was awarded a $2 million U.S. Department of Labor Community-Based Job Training grant. These funds are being used to expand the program and provide a mobile welding and fabrication lab. The mobile education program component will provide training to the Curry County Campus, as well as high schools and businesses throughout Coos, Curry and Western Douglas counties. Daniels retires this year after 23 years at Southwestern. He also has been very active in the communities he has lived in. Daniels was a member of the Reedsport Volunteer Fire Department for 24 years and was selected Fireman of the Year one year. He is an active member of the Reedsport Masonic Lodge, serving as Master twice. He was a co-coordinator of an international conference held in Orlando in 2000.
