Senior Elliot Aurdahl pitched a four-hitter from the mound Monday against Willamette, but it was his swing of the bat in the third inning that provided visiting Marshfield with a 3-1 5A Midwestern League win over the Wolverines as the two teams opened the third and final league round in west Eugene. Aurdahl also struck out seven, while Kane Rowley was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. In other MWL games: North Eugene over Thurston 3-1 and Springfield downed Churchill 11-7.
3A Basketball Tourney
The decision as to whether or not hold the boy’s and girl’s 3A OSAA Basketball Tournament in the Bay Area beginning next year has been tabled to July by the Executive Board of the Oregon Schools Activities Association. Representatives from Marshfield and North Bend high schools as well as the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce made a presentation to the Executive Board Monday in Wilsonville. MHS Principal Greg Mulkey says the presentations by MHS Athletic Director Bryan Trendell, NBHS AD Boyd Bjorkquist and Visitor Convention Bureau Executive Director Katherine Hoppe were well received and he felt the Board was 60-40% or 70-30% in favor of moving the tournament from Willamette University in Salem. However, some of the Board members did express concern over the possible increase in travel expenses for some of the participating teams, especially those on the eastern side of the Cascades. Mulkey says several things will still be important to help finish swaying the Board. 1) Increasing advance ticket sales for the tournament (a large number of individuals and businesses have already committed to purchasing tournament passes); 2) Convincing more of the 3A school’s superintendents that the move is positive (more than half are supportive now, but 70% is the goal); and, 3) Overcoming travel expense concerns for not only the schools, but their families and fans as well. Coos Bay has hosted high school tournaments previously. The A-2 boy’s basketball tournament was here in 1968 and the girl’s AA tournament took place in 1975. Marshfield has also successfully hosted state wrestling tournaments. The proposal includes utilizing gymnasiums at both Marshfield and North Bend high schools.
Mulkey
Marshfield Principal Greg Mulkey is moving from the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) Championship Committee to its Executive Board. The former Coquille High School and Oregon State University graduate was elected to a three-year term April 9th, and will attend his first workshop as a member in July. Former Coos Bay School District Superintendent Giles Parker previously served on the Executive Committee, as did former Superintendent Jeremy Lyons, but when he was with the Hillsboro School District. The OSAA is the governing body of sports and other extra curricular activities with 292 member schools including nearly all public and private high schools in Oregon.
