According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement recently received information that a convicted felon from Nevada was selling guns at LOP Sports/Three Guys Thrift Shop in Winston. An investigation determined that 69-year old Avrom Sander Finkel was previously found guilty in federal court for mailing a destructive device to severely injure a Nevada State Trooper in 1993. He was arrested at the business without incident and lodged in the county jail at Roseburg on 43-counts of Felon in Possession of Firearms.

Paragliding
The money raised from a recent paragliding event on the North Oregon Coast May 1st & 2nd will be used to help pay for restoration work at Cape Meares Lighthouse west of Tillamook which was vandalized earlier this year. The Oceanside Open drew paragliders from throughout the Pacific Northwest to the shores of Tillamook County where many jumped off Maxwell Point and rode the coastal winds before safely landing on the beach at Oceanside. A paraglider uses a rectangular parachute that supports a harness. Two of the fund-raising passengers on Sunday, May 2nd, were first-timers from Garibaldi. Marvin Stuber, 78 years old, and Pat Stuber, 80 years old, were strapped separately into a tandem harness with instructor Lance Woolen of Portland. The couple described their flights as “breathtaking,” and added they would be willing to do it again.

Marshfield wins
For the second straight year, a team from Marshfield won the National Ocean Sciences Bowl team championship. However, it wasn’t the Marshfield of Coos Bay. Marshfield, Wisconsin won the annual event held April 23-25 in St. Petersburg, Florida, but a team from the Oregon Coast did place sixth overall. That honor went to the Pirates of Neah-Kah-Nie High School at Rockaway Beach in Tillamook County. Neah-Kah-Nie has dominated the event locally with nine first-place regional wins and a seventh-place national finish in 2000. Twenty-five teams competed in the national event from the United State’s coastal states and those bordering the Great Lakes, plus Colorado. The Marine Academy of Science and Technology in Highlands, NJ placed second, Mission San Jose High School of Fremont, CA, took third and La Jolla, CA finished fourth. Fifth place went to Punahou School of Honolulu, Hawaii, seventh to Thomas Jefferson of Alexandria, VA and eighth to Arcadia, CA.

Brookings-Harbor wins
Brookings-Harbor High School won the Southwest Oregon Regional Knowledge Bowl championship for the third year in a row April 29th. The Bruins finished with a 34-2 record and their only losses were to Marshfield of Coos Bay. However, BH beat the Pirates eight out of ten times during the season. The Bruins trailed Marshfield by 100 points halfway through the championship round only to rally and come-from-behind for the three-peat title. The region includes high school teams from Brookings to Florence and inland to Oakland.

He has been placed on Administrative Leave. The alleged incidents took place between May 22 and Nov. 18, 2009. ODFW Beaver Work Group to Meet in Salem
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will hold a meeting of the Beaver Work Group on Wed, May 12 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Kroc Center in Salem. The agenda includes an update on a landowner incentives survey and the distribution of western Oregon beaver relocation guidelines. The mission of the Beaver Work Group is to identify research and information gaps to help improve our understanding of beaver ecology and beaver management so we can maximize the ecological benefits that beaver provide, especially for ESA-listed coast coho, and minimize any negative impacts. The work is done within the guidelines of existing rules and statutes. Identified in the Oregon Conservation Strategy as important to wetland creation and maintenance, the beaver is Oregon’s state animal.

Public invited to statewide meetings about hunting regulations:
ODFW will host a series of public meetings around the state to present information and accept public comment on proposals for hunting regulations, including the possibility of making the wearing of hunter orange while hunting mandatory in Oregon. Currently, ODFW strongly encourages but does not require that hunters wear hunter orange while hunting. Due to concerns about vision-related hunting fatalities, the Fish and Wildlife Commission is considering making the wearing of hunter orange mandatory while hunting. The Commission requested that ODFW staff research the issue and propose various rule options. Meeting attendees will hear these options and may offer public comments about them. Proposed rule options should be online at the Web site below no later than the end of next week (April 30). http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hunting/safety/hunter_orange.asp. The Commission will be briefed on the proposed hunter orange rule options during the June 4 meeting in Salem, when they will decide whether to move forward with formal rule-making. If they decide to proceed, final rules regarding hunter orange would be considered at the Oct. 1 meeting in Bend when 2011 big game regulations will be set. Also at the series of public meetings, ODFW staff will provide information about big game herd health and numbers, propose the number of controlled big game hunting tags to issue this fall and review concepts for 2011 big game regulations. Fall big game tag numbers for 2010 controlled hunts will be available online in early May under the Hunting Resources page: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hunting/index.asp. Oregon offers both general seasons and controlled hunts for big game (deer, elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, Rocky Mtn goat, cougar, and black bear). The number of tags for controlled hunts is limited and hunters must apply for them by May 15 each year. The Commission will adopt 2010 fall big game tag numbers at their June 4 meeting in Salem. Also during the statewide public meetings, those interested in Oregon’s Mule Deer Initiative (MDI), an effort to boost declining mule deer numbers, are encouraged to offer public comments about the MDI plan. The plan is available online at: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hunting/big_game/mule_deer/docs/Mule_Deer_Mgmt_Plan_Final.pdf. Meeting attendees can also offer input on game bird hunting regulations, which the Commission will set at the Aug. 6 meeting in Salem. Written comments about any of the above topics can be sent to ODFW Wildlife Division, 3406 Cherry Ave NE, Salem, OR 97303 or e-mailed to odfw.comments@state.or.us. Members of the public may also testify in person at Commission meetings. 2010 Big Game Public Meeting Schedule: Seaside, May 10, 4 – 7 pm, Seaside Convention Center – Seamist Rm. Newport, May 12, 6 – 8 pm, Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Dr. Bldg. 904 Rooms 30 – 32. Charleston, May 12, 6 – 8 pm, North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave North Bend.
