Election Day
A low voter turnout is expected by Oregon officials for today’s statewide election. Mail in ballots should not be mailed at this point as they will not reach county elections departments in time to be counted. Ballots; however, can still be dropped off at the normal locations up to 8 p.m. About 37-percent of the state’s 2 million registered voters are expected to participate in the primary.
High winds
The National Weather Service has issued a high wind watch from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening with south winds forecast 25 to 35 mph.
Structure fire
A structure fire was reported on South 2nd Street in Coos Bay Tuesday morning about 2:15 a.m. No other information was available.
Missing person
The Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office is asking for help from the public in locating a man missing from the Reedsport area. Raymond Glover, age 59, was last seen on Friday, May 14th at about 0930 hours in downtown Reedsport driving his white 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Glover normally has contact with friends and family every day but nobody has heard from Glover since the evening of May 13th. Glover lives alone and had no plans to be traveling out of the area. Deputies have checked the Lower Smith River area, where Glover resides, as well as other commonly traveled routes but have not been able to locate Glover. If anyone believes they have seen Raymond Glover or if anyone has information as to his whereabouts they should contact the Sheriff's Office at 541-440-4471.
Coquille
The problem was first reported about 2:30 a.m. Monday morning. No water in Coquille. Not just one area, but the entire city according to a police dispatcher. The Coquille School District shutdown for the day due to the lack of water, and public works crews were reportedly working on the problem.
Hiker
A hiker in his 20s reportedly fell to his death off of a North Oregon Coast mountain Sunday. A group of hikers scaled the 3,283-foot Saddle Mountain in Clatsop County; however, one of the members fell off a ledge and plunged 100-feet down a steep slope while attempting to take a picture. The unidentified victim died from his injuries shortly after a rescue climber reached his location.
Mick Sneddon to Receive College Distinguished Alumni Award
Michael “Mick” Sneddon has been chosen as the recipient of the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award. The award is an honor to recognize a Southwestern Oregon Community College alumnus who has achieved excellence in their professional and personal lives and for touching the lives of others with their contributions. Sneddon attended Southwestern in 1982, earning an Associates of Science in Fire Science Technology in 1984. He also holds a Bachelors of Science in Fire Service Administration from Eastern Oregon University. Born and raised in the Florence area, Sneddon spent time as a youth around the Florence Fire Department where his father and two of his brothers were volunteer firefighters. Of his 27 years, all but 2 were in Coos County. Sneddon was hired in 1986 by the North Bend Fire Department as a Firefighter / Engineer, working his way up the ranks to Firefighter / Engineer II Training Coordinator. He was selected as the Fire Chief of the Charleston Rural Fire Protection District in 1996, the position he still holds today.
Nurse
A nurse within the Coos Bay School District has been notified that she has been selected to receive the Healthy Schools Program Champion Award. Angie Webster is one of 10 individuals across the country selected for the award. According to a letter to Superintendent Bob De La Vergne, “The goal of the Champion Award is to help celebrate school wellness council members who have worked hard to inspire their school’s students and staff to eat well, move more and be well.” Webster will received an all expense paid trip to New York City June 14 & 15 to receive her award. She will also served as a featured speaker during designated events throughout the year.
Rose Festival Court at the Beach!
After a day of serving food to the needy, the Rose Festival Court can bask in the light of their good deeds on the Oregon Coast. The first day at the coast begins with lunch Tuesday and a historical trolley ride through Astoria. Then, the Princesses tour the “Goonies” Museum, plant a tree in honor of the Pacific Power’s 100th Anniversary, and unwind with a stroll on the beach. Then, it’s time to celebrate with pizza and arcade games, before calling it a night at the Inn at Cannon Beach. The next day, Wednesday, begins bright and early as the Princesses hit the road to give on-air radio interviews in Tillamook. After entertaining the airwaves, the Princesses check out the Tillamook Country Pioneer Museum, sample local cheeses at the Tillamook Cheese Factory, and hug some trees as they tour the Forest Center. Saturday the Court ends their busy week by greeting guests at the Portland Rose Festival’s Rose Building Open House downtown at Waterfront Park. The Rose Festival’s Grand Floral Parade will be held June 22nd in Portland.
CB Schools
The Coos Bay School District Board of Directors will hold an Executive Session and Special Board Meeting on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, in the Community Room at Milner Crest Education Center, 1255 Hemlock Ave., Coos Bay, Oregon. The Executive Session, based on ORS 192.660(2)(d) to conduct deliberations with persons designated by the governing body to carry on labor negotiations, will begin at 4:00 PM. The Special Board Meeting will begin at 5:00 PM.

The Historic Landmark Commission will hold a regular public meeting on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 12:00 PM in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 835 California St., North Bend, Oregon. “On Paper Wings”
The Coos Historical and Maritime Museum will sponsor a presentation of, “On Paper Wings," May 18, 7 p.m., at the Egyptian Theater in downtown Coos Bay. In the spring of 1945, a Japanese balloon bomb killed six people near the town of Bly. They were the only people killed on the continental United States as the result of enemy action during World War II. “On Paper Wings” is a documentary film about the lives of the Japanese and Americans who were affected by the balloon bomb project and how they all came together 40 years after the end of the war. This film has won seven awards, including the Best Documentary awards at the Tacoma Film Festival and the Kent Film Festival. Filmmaker Ilana Sol will be at the Egyptian for the local showing to discuss the making of the film and to answer questions about the project. In addition, on the night of the presentation, the museum will have on display at the Egyptian a balloon bomb ballast ring, discovered near Agness in 1978. Tickets for the screening, which is a fundraiser for the Coos Historical & Maritime Museum, will be $5 for adults and $3 for students, seniors and museum members.

Restraining order
A 27-year old Bandon male was arrested Sunday following an alleged violation of a Restraining Order involving a 25-year old female. According to a news release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office, a probable cause arrest was issued for Christopher J. Littles following an investigation. He was located by Bandon Police and taken into custody on the warrant, transported and lodged in the county jail at Coquille.

A 56-year old male was contacted and trespassed from a location near Menasha in North Bend Sunday night after the “officer seized 2011 year tags off the vehicle that subject stole from another vehicle and put on that one.” According to an entry on the police log for 8:23 p.m., the individual was advised not to drive the vehicle and that vehicle has to be moved.”
Egged
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Sunday, 7:16 p.m., 1800 block Oak St., “reported someone egged their shop over the weekend.”
Probation violation
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for 11:43 a.m., Sunday, “reported male subject possibly violating No Contact Order by being near her. Officer took report of Probation Violation.” Fifty-two year old Rexford Estes arrested for Probation Violation and was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
Tire
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Sunday morning, 5:43 a.m., Washington & Sherman avenues, “officer stopped a motorhome pulling a car because one of the tires on the car had blown out and the car was rolling on the bare rim. Officer advised the driver and he is going to pull over at Pancake Mill and change the tire.”
Kicked
A 31-year old female was reportedly kicked in the head by a horse and was laying in a field on Daniels Creek Road Sunday, 5:46 p.m. According to an entry on the Coos Co. Sheriff’s log, a 10-year old child reported the incident. Millington Fire District was paged along with a deputy and an ambulance.

Mostly cloudy and showers likely this morning along the Oregon Coast with highs in the mid 50s to mid 60s and southwest winds 10-15 mph. Partly to mostly cloudy tonight with lows in the mid 40s to lower 50s and southeast winds 10-15 mph. Rain on Wednesday with highs in the lower 50s to lower 60s.

OSU Dad’s Weekend tickets
Oregon State University students began purchasing Dad's Weekend tickets on Monday May 17 for this fall's football game against the Washington State Cougars. The game will be played Nov. 13 at Reser Stadium. Students are reminded that there are limited supplies of tickets available. Parents may purchase up to two tickets for Dad's Weekend for $45 each. A free student ticket will be processed with the purchased parent ticket(s) at the time of order. The student's OSU identification number must be provided at that time.

Oregon State will host Seattle in two non-conference baseball games Tuesday and Wednesday in Corvallis. The Beavers return to Pac-10 play on Friday, May 21st, at Arizona State in Tempe, AZ.
OSU rowing
The Oregon State men’s rowing team took home fourth place at the Pac-10 Conference Championships on Sunday. The Beavers brought their freshman, second varsity, and varsity crews to this weekend’s races. Each crew placed fourth in their respective race, securing the fourth place spot overall in the Pac-10. Their placement put them behind first-place Washington, second-place California, and third-place Stanford. The Beavers beat out Washington State, USC, UCLA, and Oregon.

Oregon’s baseball team will be looking for a little revenge when it plays the University of Portland Pilots in Portland today, 3 p.m. The Pilots won in Eugene 3-1 on May 4th.
