Coast Guard monitors barge lost in tow near Columbia River entrance
The Coast Guard closely monitored the efforts of a Sause Bros. tugboat crew as it successfully regained control of a barge that was lost in tow Wednesday. Station Cape Disappointment received a call at approximately 6:50 p.m. from the tugboat MIKI HANA stating the cable being used to tow a 330-foot barge had snapped in 20-foot seas 10 miles west of Astoria during last night's storm. The master of the MIKI HANA requested Coast Guard presence on scene due to the hazards of working on deck in high winds and seas. Air Station Astoria, Ore., dispatched an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to monitor the MIKI HANA crew as they attempted to regain control of the barge. Initial attempts made by the MIKI HANA crew were unsuccessful. The Coast Guard remained in close contact with the MIKI HANA crew over the next several hours, and coordinated with the owners, the states of Washington and Oregon and the member agencies of the Regional Response Team. At approximately 11:10 p.m. the MIKI HANA crew retrieved the barge using an Orville Hook. The barge, containing approximately 700,000 pounds of construction material and 400 gallons of diesel fuel, remains offshore under the control of the MIKI HANA.

A proposal to reduce the number of members on the Coos Bay – North Bend Visitor’s Convention Bureau to five now moves on to the Coquille Tribe for consideration. The Coos Bay City Council followed North Bend’s lead in adopting the same language for the Bureau that includes one seat each for the two cities and the Tribe. The other two seats would be filled by a representative from the local hotel/motel industry that participates in charging guests a transient room lodge tax, and the final seat would go to a representative from the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. The last two seat representatives would have to be ratified by the two cities and tribe. The proposal also includes permission to the Bureau to change its name and reaffirms the tax liability payment plan of 29% of the 7% charged guests allocated back to the Bureau for promoting the Bay Area.

Eleven Southwestern Oregon Community College students have been awarded Welding and Fabrication scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year. Each of the students will receive a $1500 scholarship. To be eligible, awardees must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits at Southwestern, maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA, and be taking courses within the curriculum of the Associates of Applied Science degree in Welding and Fabrication. Incoming students receiving the scholarships are (hometown): Joseph Bussman (Sixes), Sean McMullan (Coos Bay), Devin Sutliff (Bandon), Kevin Van Hooser (Bandon), Gina Weston (Coos Bay) and Joshua Wonsley (Corvallis). This is the second of three years for a total of $45,000 in scholarships to be awarded over the life of the grant. Thirteen scholarships will be available next year. Introduced by President Bush in his 2004 "State of the Union" address, Community-Based Job Training grants improve the ability of community colleges to provide their regions' workers with the skills needed to enter growing industries. Southwestern requested the grant with the intention of further developing and expanding workforce talent in welding, metals fabrication and design for the Rural Oregon South Coast Region. Southwestern was the only college in Oregon to receive the grant. The grant project has had many objectives, including the custom design and purchase of a Mobile Training Lab; curriculum development; short term training development; increased capacity in Southwestern’s Welding and Fabrication Program; retrofitting the college welding lab to increase the number of students that can be served per term with new and expanded technological capabilities; hiring one additional full time welding instructor; hiring a Project Director; hiring a full-time training coordinator/mobile lab instructor; obtaining American Welding Society (AWS) Certification for the Southwestern AAS Degree Program in Welding and Fabrication; and, a curriculum review of existing programs to advance the college’s metals instructor certification.

OSP wildlife investigation
An Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division investigation that began in 2008 culminated recently in Jackson County Circuit Court with lifetime hunting suspensions for two men. OSP Senior Trooper Jim Collom and Senior Trooper Mike Cushman, both assigned at the OSP Central Point Area Command office, spearheaded the investigation after information was received alleging that TERRY E. CLEARWATER, age 42, from Butte Falls, and BRODY J. GERKE, age 37, from Shady Cove, were working together to use bait and hounds to kill black bear and cougar. Since 1994, it has been against Oregon law to use of bait or dogs to attract or take black bear and to use dogs to take cougar. On March 31, 2009, OSP troopers served a search warrant GERKE's Shady Cove residence where nearly 60 items of evidence were seized. GERKE was eventually charged with 15 counts of wildlife crimes. CLEARWATER was also charged for his involvement with the May 25, 2008 killing of a black bear with the use of dogs. A previous investigation resulted in guilty pleas by CLEARWATER and GERKE in early 2009 to unlawfully using dogs to pursue and kill a cougar in the Shady Cove area. Oregon law mandates that a person's second conviction for the offense of using dogs to pursue and kill a bear or cougar results in a lifetime hunting suspension. GERKE pled guilty to three counts of Hunting Bear/Cougar with Dogs/Bait and one count of Illegal Possession of Wildlife. In addition to the lifetime hunting suspension and forfeiture of items seized from his residence, he was also sentenced to 24 months probation, 80 hours of community service, and $2,001 in fines and restitution. CLEARWATER pled guilty to one count of Hunting Bear with Dogs. In addition to his lifetime hunting suspension, he was also sentenced to 24 months probation, 64 hours of community service, and $1,340 in fines and restitution. Jackson County Deputy District Attorneys Laura Abraham and Adam Peterson prosecuted the cases involving both men and complimented the troopers' work. "These convictions are a direct result of OSP's hard work. Protection of our natural resources has always been important to Oregonians, and we will continue to prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law," said Abraham.

Baseball coach Quintin Hall, “I would like to nominate Josh Perkins...Probably one of the most pleasant and good natured kids that you could ever be around. He has had the most sac bunts and the entire season and did an outstanding job playing third base last week. He is normally our first baseman but do to circumstances he moved over and did a great job. For a big guy he did an excellent job executing our offensive rundown plays. He has battled threw a multitude of personal things to become one of our inspirational leaders.” Track coach Mac McIntosh, “Hannah Francis: Hannah put together the best series of marks for a thrower in the past 5 five years during the triangular meet with Thurston and Siuslaw, and topped off a remarkable 3-event performance with a lifetime-best mark in the pole vault. Hannah set lifetime personal records in all three throws, setting up potential qualifications for the state meet in four events. Her discus and shot marks lead the league, her javelin mark is second by less than a foot and her 9'0 pole vault mark ranks third in conference.
