Fire fatalities
A release of a study by the Oregon Fire Fatality Review Committee for a five-year period between 2004 & 2008 showed there were 26,773 residential fires in the state. Within that number, 120 of those fires resulted in 138 fatalities. The committee was tasked to make recommendations aimed at reducing the number of residential fire fatalities in Oregon. Key findings within the report showed 50% of all fire fatalities occurred in single or two-family housing. Thirty-one percent took place in mobile homes or trailers, and 17% were in apartments or other multi-family dwellings. The top four causes of fatal fires were smoking material, candles, electrical and combustibles too close to a heat source. Sixty-eight percent of the victims were age 50 or older. Eight recommendations came out of the report to reduce fire fatalities: Expanding Older Adult Fire Prevention Program; Improve Smoke Alarm Program; Increase Home Fire Escape Planning Effort; Promote Installation of Home Fire Sprinklers; Target Fire Prevention and Life Safety Education to At-Risk Population; Increase Cigarette-Caused Fire Education; Monitor Legislative and Regulatory Processes; Improve Data Collection and Review.
