Shotgun assault
Investigators into a shotgun shooting early Sunday morning at a residence south of Florence have narrowed their focus to a 46-year old male suspect. A 27-year old female, visiting the home on Green Gate Road near Honeyman State Park about 1 a.m. was shot in the stomach with the shotgun and her 26-year old boyfriend, both from Florence, was struck with it. The woman’s four-year old boy accompanied them. The victim remains hospitalized at Sacred Heart’s Riverbend Hospital in Springfield. Investigators now say they are looking for 46-year old Victor Glen Caron, a white male, 5-8, with brown hair and brown eyes. Investigators are no longer looking for a 40-year old female he was living with is no longer a suspect nor her 2000 blue Dodge Durango. Caron is known to have ties to Nevada and California.
Type O blood
The supply of Type O Negative Blood at the American Red Cross has dropped to a critical level. Type O Negative is considered a universal blood that can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations. According to a news release, Type O Negative donors are needed now to help prevent the supply from declining even further. Eligible volunteers donors are asked to call 1-800-733-2767 or visit www.redcrossblood.org. The next Blood Drive in the Bay Area is scheduled for Thursday, June 17th, 1-6 p.m., at the College Park Community Church at 2548 Newmark St. in North Bend.
Six assisted from grounded vessel at Umpqua River, Ore.
The U.S. Coast Guard assisted six people from a grounded 21-foot vessel at Winchester Point at the entrance to the Umpqua River west of Reedsport Monday. Coast Guard Station Umpqua River received a distress call from the people aboard the boat at approximately 10.a.m. and launched a 47-motor lifeboat crew and a ground party to the scene. The water was too shallow for the lifeboat to close in on the vessel, but the ground party was able to reach the people and attempted to dewater the vessel, which was taking on water from the incoming surf. Dewatering pumps could not keep up with the incoming tide and the vessel was left to be recovered by a salvage operator. No injuries or pollution were reported.
NB Historic Landmark Commission
The Historic Landmark Commission will hold a regular public meeting on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 12:00 PM. They will meet at Simpson Park shelter, 1250 Sherman Ave., North Bend. NBHS last day
Today is the last day of school for Grades 9-11 at North Bend High School following two days of final exams. Students will be dismissed at 11:25 a.m.
Intoxicated
A female described as intoxicated and out of control Friday evening near Spaw Lane on the Cape Arago Hwy., was arrested by a responding Coos Co. Sheriff’s deputy after she allegedly began fighting with him upon his arrival. According to a Sheriff’s Office news release, 46-year old Carol J. Pederson, of Coos Bay, was contacted at 6:20 p.m. After a struggle with the deputy, she was arrested on charges of Disorderly Conduct II and Resisting Arrest. “Due to numerous statements made by Mrs. Pederson she was transported to the Bay Area Hospital where she was admitted and is going to be evaluated by the Mental Health Dept.”
Kelemen
A 28-year old male who allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted and eight-month pregnant 25-year old woman near the small community of Riverton outside of Coquille Friday morning, was still in Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay Monday morning. According to a news release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office, Jason Joseph Kelemen ingested a quantity of methamphetamine before he was captured. “Initial blood screen conducted on Jason Kelemen when he was checked at Bay Area Hospital on Friday, revealed he had at least 5 different drugs in his system.” Following his release from the hospital he is expected to be transported to the county jail at Coquille.
DUII
He was found asleep behind the wheel of a 1987 Toyota pickup truck with its lights on on Coos Sumner Road southeast of Coos Bay early Monday morning. According to a news release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office, a Sheriff’s deputy responded to a call about the vehicle at 4:26 a.m. at milepost 5. Twenty-two year old Robert Nickerson, of Coquille, was found asleep. He was arrested on a charge of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and transported to the county jail at Coquille.
Fight
A report of a “fight next door” on the 600 block of No. Cammann St. in the Empire District of Coos Bay early Monday morning, 4:19 a.m., resulted in an arrest. According to an entry on the police log, 33-year old Tobey Denn was charged with Assault IV – Domestic and Resisting Arrest.
Screaming
A report of a person screaming outside the Woodland Apartments on the 200 block of So. Schoneman St. in the Empire District of Coos Bay early Monday morning, 3:09 a.m., resulted in the arrest of an individual. According to an entry on the police log, “Tim is still outside screaming, not leaving. Arr/Pathway transported to the Coos Co. Jail on charge of Disorderly Conduct.”
DUII
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Sunday, 9:49 p.m., 200 No. Broadway, “attempt to locate possible intoxicated driver.” Seventy-one year old Morgan May charged with DUII (BAC .13%). Vehicle secured at the scene, transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
Senior trip
According to an entry on the Coquille Police log for Sunday, 12:11 p.m., W. Central Blvd., “CBPD 122 will be doing a K9 sniff before kids get on the bus and depart for their trip to CA. 122 is also bringing a portable intox and 122 would like the assistance of an on duty Coquille officer to run all the kids thru the bus boarding.”
Tree down
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Sunday, 3:49 p.m., Anderson and Broadway, “numerous 911 calls of a tree down and on top of three or four cars – nobody in the parked cars. No injuries.”
Dispute
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Sunday, 12:08 p.m., 200 block No. Broadway, “Domestic problem.” Thirty-nine year old Clay Derek Grimes arrested on a charge of Domestic Harassment.
Wanted
A male wanted by three local police agencies allegedly trespassed at the Mill Casino in North Bend Sunday evening and was detained. According to an entry on the NBPD log, 30-year old Guy David Allen Jr. “resisted security officers when they attempted to detain him, subject now semi-cooperative in Holding Room. Allen was found to be wanted on two warrants out of North Bend for Failure to appear on original charge of Possession of Meth and Possession Controlled Substance I. Second warrant was Failure to Appear. Also wanted on a Reedsport PD warrant for Possession Meth,a nd Coos Co. Sheriff’s warrant for Parole Violation. He was transported to the county jail at Coquille.
Marijuana
A consent search of a room at the Mill Casino/Hotel Sunday, 7:04 p.m., led to the discovery of Marijuana and warning and an arrest. According to an entry on the North Bend Police log, two males were contacted. Twenty-one year old Justin Charles Campbell, Beaverton, was warned for PCS Less than an Oz. Forty-four year old Kenneth Lee Funk, Beaverton, warned for PCS Less than an Oz, but also taken into custody on a warrant out of Washington for Absconding. He was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille and “Items entered into evidence for destruction.”
Gasoline
He forgot to pay for his gasoline. According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Sunday, 2:20 p.m., 1700 block Sherman Ave., Shell Gas Station, an employee contacted police after a “male subject hauling a 5th wheel trailer had left NB on Hwy. 101 without paying for his gas, value $68.67, RP believed the incident to be an accident on the driver’s part.” Information was relayed to Douglas County, Reedsport PD and OSP. “Reedsport PD then called to advise they located truck and trailer / subject was able to call Shell and pay gas bill over the phone / officer advised confirmed this was just an accident.”
No drinking clause
A 25-year old North Bend male, who has a no drinking clause in his probation agreement, was arrested Sunday, 1:40 p.m., after he allegedly attempted to shoplift two beers from the Airport Hts. Market on the 2700 block of Virginia Ave. According to an entry on the police log, an officer located Shaun Earl Meilike on the 2900 block of Connecticut and confirmed he is intoxicated. Parole and Probation was contacted and a he was placed on a detainer, transported and lodged in the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.

Marshfield has a new girl’s varsity basketball coach. Cindy Olvera replaces co-coaches Mike George and Doug Miles. According to MHS Athletic Director Bryan Trendall, Olvera is a 1993 graduate of Oregon City High School where she played point guard on the 1992 state champion team for the Pioneers and 1993 state runners-up. She is a graduate of BYU and has spent the last eight years teaching and coaching basketball at the JV, Varsity Assistant and Varsity Head Coach levels. “We think Cindy will be a great fit for MHS as a PE/Health teacher and girls basketball coach.” Olvera arrives in Coos Bay this week and will coach the Pirates at the North Bend summer league basketball tournament this weekend.

New Oregon men’s basketball coach Dana Altman is reuniting with one of his former assistant coaches from Creighton. Kevin McKenna has resigned as head coach at Indiana State and rejoined Altman as an assistant with the Ducks in Eugene. McKenna was an assistant of Altman’s for nine years before moving up to Indiana State three years ago. The Sycamores were 43-52 under McKenna, including 17-15 and 9-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference last season. Altman also announced the hiring of former Jefferson High School of Portland player Michael Lee as assistant director of basketball operations. Lee comes to UO from Gardner-Webb University where he was an assistant coach for the last two seasons. Prior to Gardner-Webb, Lee was a graduate student manager at the University of Kansas for the 2007-08 season. Lee, who played at the KU from 2002-05, was a member of the Jayhawks’ national championship staff in 2008.

The first Oregon State University male to compete in the NCAA Track & Field Championships since 1988 finished tenth overall in the high jump last Friday in Eugene. Beaver football freshman Jordan Bishop cleared a personal best 7-01½, and was the eighth best American in the event. Bishop graduated from West Salem High School. Karl Van Calcar, who won the NCAA Steeplechase in 1988, was the last Beaver to compete in the NCAA Track Championships. OSU discontinued the program after that season, but has been slowing bringing it back with the beginning of a women’s program a few years ago under Coach Kelly Sullivan and had a few football players turnout this season as part of a men’s team.

Oregon State pitcher/designated hitter Matt Boyd has earned his second Freshman All-America honor in a week Monday. He was selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) First Team as a utility player. It is Boyd's second Freshman All-America honor as he was chosen to the Louisville Slugger Team last week. Boyd is one of five Pacific-10 Conference players named to the NCBWA's two teams, and just one of two named to the first team.
