Suspect turns self in
A man wanted in the early Sunday morning shooting of a 27-year old female south of Florence turned himself in to a Lane County Sheriff’s Office substation in Veneta Tuesday afternoon. Forty-six year old Victor Glen Caron was the subject of an intense search throughout Western Oregon after he allegedly shot the victim in the stomach with a shotgun during an argument at a house on Green Gate Road near Honeyman State Park. The woman, her 26-year old boyfriend and her four-year old son escaped about 1 a.m. and phoned 911 from a nearby gas station. Law enforcement officers converged on the house and surrounded it. However, when they entered it about 5:45 a.m., they found it empty and Caron and his 40-year old girlfriend gone. The victim was treated and is recovering at Riverbend Hospital in Springfield. Caron was taken to the Lane County Jail in Eugene.
Chetco River Protection Bills introduced in House and Senate
Seeking to protect the Chetco River from expanded suction dredge mining that threatens salmon and steelhead breeding grounds, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) introduced bills in both the House and the Senate to permanently raise the federal protection levels of more than three miles of the river and put in place new prohibitions on future mining that will preserve the Wild and Scenic portions of the river. U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and David Wu (D-Ore.) have also cosponsored the legislation. Under the legislation simultaneously introduced in the House and the Senate, portions of the Chetco River would be upgraded from Scenic to Wild while other portions would be upgraded from Recreational to Scenic. The Chetco River was recently identified by American Rivers as one of the nation’s most endangered rivers. The legislation introduced by Wyden, Merkley and DeFazio would provide federal distinction for much of the Chetco river as Wild and Scenic, carrying with it protections meant to preserve the waterway. The legislation would also prohibit any new mining claims along the river and will require current claims to meet a rigorous validation process in order to have their claims maintained. Earlier this year, Senator Wyden, Senator Merkley and Representative DeFazio asked the Obama administration to exempt the Chetco River from an antiquated 1872 law that would have allowed the mining to proceed.
Tillamook jetty
The Tillamook bar on the North Oregon Coast has been the most deadly along the coast because of hazardous conditions. Boats have crashed into the jetty, capsized while crossing the bar and lives have been lost. The U.S. Coast has now proposed establishing a safety zone at the Barview Jetty effective Tuesday, June 15th and running through September 30th to allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to contract out emergency repair work because of the jetty’s deteriorating condition.
Umpqua Lighthouse
The U.S. Coast Guard is surveying mariners to determine if the Umpqua River Lighthouse is really necessary for navigation on the Oregon Coast. If not, the two-ton first-order historic Fresnel lens could go dark and be shipped off to a museum. Local residents and historians do not want that to happen and are mounting a campaign to keep the light shining. The two white beams of light followed by a red one can be seen 20-miles offshore. The lighthouse has been operating steadily since 1894 and is one of seven icons of the Oregon Coast. An estimated 15,000 visit the lighthouse and take a tour inside each year. Many more drive by and photograph it.
