Oregon Coast News - June 22, 2010

Daily news and sports coverage for the Oregon coast plus a variety of guides and directories useful to Oregon residents and visitors.

Drug Sting
A “Buy Bust Operation for Prescription Medications” in Coos County Monday resulted in the arrest of a 25-year old female and the seizure of an estimated $875 in prescription medications. According to a news release from the South Coast Interagency Narcotics Team (SCINT), “at approximately 1700 hours an undercover officer from the narcotics team arranged to meet with Jennifer Lee Fine 25 YOA of Coquille, Oregon at unidentified location in Coos Bay, Oregon. During the course of the investigation officers seized multiple types of prescription medications with an estimated street value of $875.00 US currency and packaging material.” Fine was taken into custody without incident, transported and lodged in the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.

Oysters
The environmental crisis in the Gulf of Mexico has brought back memories of a similar oil catastrophe in Coos Bay. On Feb. 4th, 1999, the 600-foot long “New Carissa” wood chip ship ran aground on the North Spit while attempting an ill advised crossing of the Bar during a storm and missed the channel. It leaked an estimated 70,000 gallons of bulk fuel into the Pacific Ocean that the tides ferried into the Coos Bay estuary. Clausen Oysters of North Bend was devastated as the oil polluted salt-water killed 70-percent of their oysters. Now, more than a decade later, Clausen Oysters has recovered, but they’re nowhere close to what they used to be as one of the world’s top-suppliers of jumbo oysters. When the oyster growers in the Gulf of Mexico begin their recovery process, they could learn a lot from the oyster growers in the Coos Bay estuary.

DEQ penalties
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a total of $30,362.50 in penalties to Robert Earl Mobley, doing business as King Salvage Co., for continued environmental violations at his King Salvage auto wrecking and salvage facility at 109 King Place near Newport. This penalty comes about a year after DEQ had issued Mobley $32,396 in penalties for previous violations at the site. Mobley has failed to pay any of those 2009 penalties.

Woodstoves
At one time, Oregon was one of the leaders in the nation when it came to woodstove manufacturing and use. The state was the first to require woodstove certification and emission limits. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality estimates that approximately 310,000 homes in the state still use woodstoves, and of that amount, approximately half use older uncertified woodstoves. The DEQ is now convening an advisory committee to discuss the fiscal impact of an upcoming rulemaking to ensure the proper removal, destruction and notification of an uncertified wood stove upon home sale. The first meeting is scheduled for June 30th in Portland.

Quake
For the second time in three days, a small earthquake was recorded just off the Central Oregon Coast, deep below the Pacific Ocean’s floor. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 1.8-magnitude quake occurred Sunday evening at 9:41 p.m., nine-miles west of Yachats, and 14-miles southwest of Waldport. It was located 20.6-miles deep. A 1.7-magnitude quake was located 21-miles west of Yachats Friday morning at a depth of 26.3-miles.

Alisha Applegate was referred to her Probation Officer, and DHS removed the child from the residence to an approved foster home.

Naked
Loudon Wainwright III had a hit song back in the 1970s called “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road.” That has nothing to do with what Coos County Sheriff’s deputies responded to early Monday morning on North Bank Road out of Coquille other than the “middle of the road.” According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, the report came in at 1:30 a.m. that a naked male was lying in the middle of the road, near milepost 1, and disrupting traffic. Fifty-one year old Michael Kelly, of Noblesville, Indiana, was actually found lying in the southbound lane. But it was true, he was not wearing any clothes. He was transported to the Coos County Jail at Coquille and later released on a citation for Disorderly Conduct II.

Jail at Coquille.

Family dispute

According to an entry on the police log, “yes I need the police here please,” Charles Jeff Cohen, Coos Bay, was arrested on charges of Domestic Violence – Menacing, Strangulation and Felony Assault IV – Domestic. He was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.

Kelly was found to be wanted on a Multnomah Co. Sheriff’s Office warrant for Failure to Appear on an original charge of Theft II.

According to an entry on the police log, “reported reckless driver headed southbound on McCullough Bridge, RP agreed to sign citation, vehicle was stopped by officer at Union Ave. near Tiny’s Tavern. OSP assisted with stop.” Twenty-seven year old Ismael Maciel Morales, North Bend, cited for No Operator’s License, Driving Uninsured, and Expired Tags.

Yelling & screaming
He was allegedly “yelling and cussing.” According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Sunday, 5:49 p.m., 1800 block of Lewis St., “reports his neighbor is intoxicated and being disorderly, yelling and cussing. Officers responded, contacted subject and asked him to keep it down.” Fifty-two year old male contacted. At 7:09 p.m., “subject is outside yelling and screaming again. Officer contacted subject and advised that he needs to go back inside and if continues then he would be going to jail.”
