Daily news and sports coverage for the Oregon coast plus a variety of guides and directories useful to Oregon residents and visitors.

USCG rescue
The Coast Guard and Lincoln City Fire Department rescued three 11-year-old boys from a 120-foot cliff at Road's End State Park north of Lincoln City, Ore., Monday. Coast Guard Air Station North Bend was notified of the trapped children by the Lincoln City Fire Department at approximately 9 p.m. and dispatched an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, Ore., after ground crews were initially unable to rescue them. One member of the Lincoln City Fire/Rescue team managed to reach the boys, but could not safely take them from the cliff. The firefighter stayed with the children until the helicopter crew could retrieve and deliver two of the boys to emergency crews on the nearby beach. He then managed to carry the last child down with the aid of other rescue team members after the hoist equipment aboard the helicopter malfunctioned. None of the boys or rescuers was injured during the incident.

Dog rescued too
The Coast Guard assisted North Lincoln, Ore., Fire/Rescue with the rescue of five people and one dog from an 18-foot pontoon boat grounded at Siletz Bay, Ore., Monday. The people aboard the boat contacted the North Lincoln Fire/Rescue Sunday after their vessel ran aground in a shallow area, but opted to stay overnight hoping the eventual high tide would free them. When the tide failed to free the vessel, the fire/rescue team and a 25-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay, Ore., attempted to retrieve the boaters by transporting them via jet ski to the waiting Coast Guard response boat. When this attempt failed, a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, Ore., was dispatched to hoist the passengers from the pontoon boat. There were no injuries reported.

Smoking
“No Smoking” signs will go up soon, but the new City of Coos Bay ordinance is already in effect within the community’s public parks. The City Council, on a split vote last month, approved a ban on smoking throughout the Mingus Park property, including the main park, outdoor stage, Choshi Garden, ball park, skate park, upper tennis court, Frisbee course, swimming pool and wooded area. The ordinance went into effect Monday morning, July 5th. The “No Smoking” ban also includes play areas at John Topits Park and Ed Lund Park in the Empire District, the Eastside Park, Taylor & Wasson Street Park and the Bay Area Optimist Park on 10th Street at the south end of the city. The goal is to not only eliminate health concerns from second-hand smoke, but also the unsightly reminder of irresponsible smokers who throw away cigarette butts anywhere they choose.

Whales
Some members of the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute from Newport on the Central Oregon Coast are in the Gulf of Mexico researching the impact the oil crisis is having on marine life, including whales. The scientists are on board the NOAA research ship Gordon Gunter. Some of the whales they are concerned about include the endangered Sperm Whale. Researchers are tagging some of the whales with electronic tracking devices. Other scientists are examining the impact the oil spill has had on other species of fish, seabirds, sea turtles, and porpoises in the Gulf.

Cruise ships
The only port along the Oregon Coast that is a stopping point for Cruise Ships will see nine this year, but next year that number is expected to increase to 15. The Port of Astoria is just one of the “Ports A Call” along the West Coast for cruise ships taking passengers between California and Alaska. The stop over is normally just one day, but it is a boom for the local economy when upwards to 3,000 tourist hit the docks of the North Oregon Coast community.

Fear kept them quiet
They said they lied and kept quiet about a murder 20-years ago on the Central Oregon Coast out of fear. The two witnesses to the murder of 16-year old Walter Thomas Ackerson Jr. were given immunity from prosecution for their testimony against then 20-year old Troy Culver who admitted to beating Ackerson and then with the help of the other two, throwing the teenager off the Yaquina Bay Bridge at Newport either dead or just unconscious from a beating. The victim’s mother and grandmother say it’s hard to watch the other two walk away with immunity, adding “it’s not justice.” All three were attending Angell Job Corps north of Yachats when they skipped away on March 24, 1990 and hitchhiked to Newport where they talked a guy into buying beer for them. Culver told investigators Ackerson had been whiny at the beach and he was tired of the noise. He hit him “again and again and again,” and slammed his head against a tree. Panicking, the three took Ackerson to the bridge and threw him over the rail. They returned to Angell and told staff Ackerson ran away. On parole for Encouraging Child Sexual Abuse and in drug treatment, part of Culver’s addiction therapy included admitting past wrongs. In August of 2009, he confessed to his parole officer in Prineville that he’d beaten a man to death 20 years earlier. He’s now in the Lincoln County Jail facing murder charges.

US 101 closed north of Bandon for three nights
Nighttime traffic between Coos Bay and Bandon to detour through Oregon 42S. BANDON - U.S. Highway 101 will be closed three consecutive nights starting Tuesday, July 6 for repair work on Bullards Bridge (mile point 260). During the closures, scheduled from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., traffic between Bandon and Coos Bay will detour onto Oregon 42S. The closures are needed so workers can replace steel parts on the drawbridge.

Crosswalk sting
North Bend Police will conduct a Pedestrian Crosswalk Sting this morning from 10 a.m. to noon at the intersection of Virginia and Marion avenues to raise motorist awareness of pedestrian safety. A decoy will be used to enter the crosswalk, while an officer is staged nearby in a patrol car. Violation of Oregon’s crosswalk pedestrian law is a Class B traffic violation, with a fine of $287.

Counterfeit money
Because of the influx of tourists to the Oregon Coast during the summer months, business owners are constantly reminded to watch out for bogus bills. Counterfeiters like to hit coastal merchants when they are busy hoping they won’t take the time to check to see if the dollar bills they are being given are good or not. An Astoria woman is facing forgery charges on the North Oregon Coast after she allegedly passed fake $10 bills in Clatsop County. Treasury officials say the paper normally doesn’t feel right, and a counterfeit marking pen is still one of the best ways to detect if the cash is real U.S. Currency or not.

Dog
It looked like a Pomeranian, but maybe not. One thing for sure; however, it was in a bad place. Back in June, a small dog got stranded on a cliff on the Central Oregon Coast and had to spend the night on a ledge 80-feet above the surf before a rescuer could rappel down to save it. It happened on June 18th at Depoe Bay’s South Point. The dog, visiting the coast with its owners, was reportedly unfamiliar with the terrain in the backyard where it was staying. About 11:30 p.m., the volunteer fire department received a call about the stranded pooch. Officials decided it was took risky to try a nighttime rescue and waited until morning. Lt. David Jensen took a bowl of water and dog treats with him as he was lowered by rope to the ledge. He was able to entice the dog to him, grabbed him, and was pulled to safety.

Black Bear
There were no apparent wounds, and officials with the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Dept. speculate a young black bear found lying on Heceta Beach near Florence recently could have died of natural causes. A Beach Ranger buried the bear that had been lying on the open sand for a number of days drawing attention from beachcombers. It’s not unusual to find dead marine animals on the beach, but this is the first time most can remember finding a deceased black bear.

Coos Bay District Resource Advisory Committee to Meet
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Coos Bay District Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) will meet on Tuesday, July 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the BLM office in North Bend. The RAC will review applications for projects that benefit Federal lands or resources and make recommendations on projects to be funded. The Coos Bay RAC is one of five committees established in western Oregon BLM districts that contain Oregon and California Grant Lands and Coos Bay Wagon Road lands. The RACs were formed to comply with the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act. This Act provided a payment schedule to local counties in lieu of funds generated by timber harvest on Federal lands. The Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act was reauthorized as part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 signed into law in October 2008 (Public Law 110-343). The reauthorized Act provides declining payments to 18 westside Oregon Counties from Fiscal Year 2008 through 2011. Committee members review project proposals and recommend their highest priorities for funding to the Secretary of Interior. The Committee represents a variety of interests, and members work collaboratively for the long term benefit of public lands and economic stability in local communities. The public is welcome to attend all portions of the meeting and address the RAC during the public comment period at approximately 11:00 a.m. For further information on the RAC or the upcoming meeting, contact Glenn Harkleroad at the Coos Bay District Office at (541) 751-4361. Additional information about the RACs is available online at: www.blm.gov/or/rac/ctypayracinfo.php.
