The two boys were out shooting with their step-father. The seven-year old had a .22 caliber rifle, turned and accidentally discharged it, striking the nine-year old. Urgent repairs studied for US 101 - north of Sea Lion Caves
The Oregon Department of Transportation has discovered a void beneath the asphalt in the southbound lane on US 101 at milepost 169.5, approximately nine miles north of Sea Lion Caves. As a result, all travel through the area is restricted to the northbound lane and is controlled by flaggers. “It appears that the rock base beneath the asphalt has washed away with time,” said ODOT District 5 Manager, Mike Spaeth. “We won’t know for sure how bad it is until we can cut into the roadway and inspect beneath it,” he said. An assessment of the erosion to the road base will be conducted on Tuesday, July 13 and a decision on how to address the problem will be made shortly afterward. Motorists are encouraged to use caution, reduce their speed through the area and allow for extra time for travel. Delays are expected to be 10-15 minutes or less.

Armchair Adventure
The “Armchair Film Adventure” series at Coos Bay Public Library continues on
Tuesday, July 13th at 2:00 p.m. in the Myrtlewood Meeting Room. The history and
creation of Mount Rushmore will be this afternoon's program. Towering over the Black Hills of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore was the vision of Gutzon Borglum, a combative and fiercely talented young sculptor. To elicit public support for his dream, Borglum whipped American patriotism into a frenzy, finally securing the financing he needed to embark on the creation of his awe-inspiring monument. Over the course of 15 years, 350 men poured their sweat into Borglum's vision, using drills and explosives to chisel Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt into the massive granite cliff. Here is the controversial history of this unorthodox masterpiece, including the remarkable design specifications, the tragedies and setbacks that marred its construction, and the awe it inspires to this day. Everyone is welcome at this program sponsored by The Friends of the Coos Bay Public Library. No admission is charged and refreshments will be served. Please call 269-1101 for further information on this program.
