Hwy. 101
Detours from Hwy. 101 in North Bend were dropped early Monday afternoon after a crew from the Oregon Department of Transportation reopened part of the coastal route following a slide Sunday that blocked all four lanes. A single northbound lane was the first to reopen late in the morning, followed by a single southbound lane in the early afternoon. The slide occurred Sunday about 2 p.m. Mud, trees and power lines slid off the hillside following a fire the night before. Water reportedly saturated the ground from firefighters fighting the fire, or a broken water line. Some of the utility poles were reported to be on fire when the slide occurred. Electrical power was lost to the immediate area and traffic was sent west to Sherman Avenue and other streets in North Bend. A temporary concrete wall was also being erected to keep any other material from sliding onto the highway.
Unemployment rate
The unemployment rate on the South Oregon Coast for June is still among the highest in the state; however, according to the Oregon Employment Dept., the rate in both Coos and Curry counties last month was below the previous month and the previous year’s figures as well. In Coos County, the jobless rate last month was 12.5%, down from the 12.7% in May and a full percentage point less than the 13.7% in June of 2009. Curry County’s rate was 12.9%, less than the 13.2% in May and also a full percentage point less than the 13.9% of a year ago. Out of the five complete counties along the Oregon Coast, both Lincoln and Tillamook counties’ rates went up in June, while Clatsop on the far North Coast had the lowest. Lincoln County’s rate last month was 11.0%, up from 10.8% in May, and slightly higher than the 10.9% in June 2009. Tillamook Co. went up to 9.5% from 9.1% in May, and just under the 9.6% recorded last year. Clatsop Co. had a rate of 8.8%, the seventh lowest in the state, and down from the 9.4% in May and the 9.2% in June 2009.
Quake
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake rumbled the Pacific Ocean floor off of Vancouver Island, Canada, Monday morning. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at 10:15 a.m., 248-miles west to northwest of Neah Bay, WA. The quake occurred on one of the two fault lines that run parallel with the West Coast.
Fatal
A 22-year old female passenger in a pickup truck that ran a stop sign at Brockway Road Monday morning west of Winston was killed when a dump truck struck it. According to an Oregon State Police report, 23-year old Jesse W. James, of Riddle, was driving the Toyota that was northbound about 10:30 a.m. It failed to stop at the intersection and was struck by a westbound dump truck operated by 58-year old Dudley L. Lenhart, of Tenmile. Twenty-two year old Kaila L. Boyer, of Riddle, was killed. Lenhart was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with serious injuries. James was transported by air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland with critical injuries.
Accident
A 70-year old Camas Valley woman was transported to Portland’s Legacy Emanuel Hospital with critical injuries following a single-vehicle accident on Hwy. 42 west of Winston Monday morning. According to an Oregon State Police report, Adella J. Hood was eastbound at 10:50 a.m. when her van traveled off the south side of the highway near milepost 68. It went up an embankment and Hood was ejected. She was not using safety restraints and the door of the driver’s side was held in place by a bungee cord. Two passengers in the van had minor injuries.

Women's Barbershop Chorus Offers Guest Night
Sea Breeze Harmony Chorus invites all women to a guest night Tuesday, July 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 123 Ocean Boulevard, Coos Bay. Guests will have an opportunity to sing barbershop harmony with the chorus. No singing experience is needed. The evening will include a raffle and refreshments. Sea Breeze Harmony Chorus is a 15-member women's a cappella chorus that is part of Sweet Adelines International. Burglary
A Salem couple was arrested as they exited a vacation rental on the Central Oregon Coast Sunday evening. According to a news release from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to a report of a possible burglary in progress in Otter Rock about 8:15 p.m. He learned from the home owner that a vehicle had been seen parked behind his vacation rental house. The deputy located two suspects exiting the residence and took both into custody. Twenty-year old Mathew J. Anderson was charged with Burglary I, Attempted Burglary I, Criminal Mischief II and Theft of Services. Nineteen-year old Katelyn M. Murray was cited and released on Criminal Trespass I and Theft of Services charges. It was also learned that Anderson had attempted to gain entry into two other houses in the North Newport area. He was transported and lodged in the county jail at Newport.
Beer theft
The clerk was knocked down as the thief stole beer early Monday morning from the 7-11 on Newmark Ave. in the Empire District of Coos Bay. According to an entry on the police log, a 59-year old female reported, “another theft of beer, one of the subjects knocked RP down to get away.”
Dispute
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for early Monday morning, 1:15 a.m., 245 So. Schoneman St., 23-year old female reported, “just got out of apartment where boyfriend was keeping her and another girl from leaving.”
Fire
A fire was reported late Sunday night near Sunset Middle School in the Empire District of Coos Bay. According to an entry on the police log for 11:25 p.m., “multiple callers advise fire at location, down by the ball field; later callers advised in the woods south of the school.”
Fire
A fire was reported in the kitchen of a bed & breakfast on the 200 block of Alder Ave. in Coos Bay Sunday night. According to an entry on the police log for 10:38 p.m., the Fire Dept. was dispatched to “This Olde House B&B.”
Cigarettes
He asked a stranger to buy him cigarettes. According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Sunday, 6:13 p.m., McKay’s Market, 149 So. 7th St., 58-year old male reported, “customer in the store reporting a kid just gave him money in front of the store requesting that he buy him cigarettes.”
Warrant
According to an entry on the Coos Bay Police log for Sunday, 5:08 p.m., 200 E. 2nd St., Coos Co. Jail, Coquille, “subject just turned himself in.” Twenty-one year old Rodney Yeiter was on Parole Violation on Attempt to Elude.
Mooning
Definitely not a welcoming committee. According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Sunday, 5:49 p.m., Harrison & Virginia avenues, “RP reported 2 male subjects in a white Honda Accord driving in area, passenger is ‘mooning’ people and flipping them off. Officer responded, checked the area, advised unable to locate; gone prior to arrival.”
Shoplift
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Sunday, 12:21 p.m., 2131 Newmark St., “Bi Mart security reported male adult in custody for shoplifting.” Fifty-eight year old Duane Ray Jadin, Coos Bay, cited and released for Theft III. Value $63.95. “Subjects trespassed from Bi Mart properties.”
Probation Violation
According to an entry on the North Bend Police log for Sunday, 9:23 a.m., Oak Street Park, “anonymous male reported male subject in bathroom for over an hour. Sounds like he is cooking something.” Twenty-nine year old Daniel Kenneth Frye, North Bend, arrested for Probation Violation “as he admitted to smoking marijuana and was transported to the Coos County Jail” at Coquille.
Found
According to entries on the North Bend Police log for Sunday involving found items: 10:16 a.m., 2040 Broadway, “officer located some items left in the trash at Rite Aid. Brought to station for safe keeping while he tries to locate owner.” 10:39 a.m., 2121 Newmark St., “officer located a backpack behind Albertson’s. Officer advised subject probably just left it there for a few minutes. Owner responded and picked up property.” 10:58 a.m., Moe’s Super Lube, “officer flagged down by citizen who wound some property left behind Moe’s Super Lub. LG cellphone charcoal grey in color. Placed in property room while officer attempts to locate owner.” 11:10 a.m., 500 block Delaware Ave., “RP advised his wife possible found a baggie containing drugs in their yard. RP brought it into the station. Items left at the department to be destroyed.”
Missing person
According to an entry on the Coos Co. Sheriff’s log for Sunday night, 10:08 p.m., Hauser dunes, “missing person on dune buggy in Hauser area.” Victims listed as 25-year old pregnant female, and 27-year old male.
Car clout
According to an entry on the Coos Co. Sheriff’s log for Sunday, 1:19 p.m., Bastendroff Beach, 48-year old female reported “someone broke windows out of her car. Stole purse with cash, CR cards, ID etc.”
ATV accident
An All Terrain Vehicle accident was reported in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Sunday. According to an entry on the Coos Co. Sheriff’s log, the accident was near “Boxcar,” an involved a 15-year old male. He was transported by ambulance to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay.
Meth
A warrant service Monday afternoon also led to a drug bust for Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine on the Central Oregon Coast. According to a news release from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff’s Office, a deputy went to Devils Lake State Park in Lincoln City to serve an arrest warrant on 53-year old John Otis Parker, of Otis, who was wanted for Failure to Appear. During the contact, meth was found in his possession. Parker was transported to the county jail at Newport.
DUII
A traffic stop Friday, July 16th, in Toledo for a lighting violation led to an arrest for narcotics use. According to a news release from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff’s Office, 49-year old Robert A. Simer, Newport, was contacted. The deputy observed signs of narcotic use and conducted a DUII investigation. Several Methadone pills were found in Simer’s possession for “which he did not have a prescription for. Simer consented to field sobriety tests and failed.” He was charged with DUII and Unlawful Possession of Schedule II controlled substance, transported and lodged in the county jail at Newport.

SOCS softball
The July 17-18 Cooper the Dog Memorial Tournament in Junction City. SOCS 14u and 12u teams also competed in JCity over the weekend. 16U team finished second this past weekend. Coach Floyd Montiel, “We played perhaps the best weekend of the entire summer. One poor seventh inning of the Championship game did us in. Overall very pleased with the continued development and improvement of the players.” Game 1: SOCS 11, Junction City Tigers 3. Six players with multiple hits. Alisha Charitar went 2-3, 2 run scored, a triple and 3 RBI. Kara Young 3-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Sam Sundet 2-3 with a double, and Helena Carocci 2-3 with a triple. Game 2: SOCS 9, Siskiyou Heat 3. Sam Sundet pitched a one hitter. “Bats were solid. We belted seven extra base hits. Nine different players had hits.” Charitar had two doubles, Kara Young, Christy Andy, Sam Sundet, Chelsea Forbes each had one. Alicia Hatzel hit a triple with 2 RBI. Game 3: SOCS 11, Mid-Valley Storm 2 (Corvallis HS and Crescent Valley). Sam Sundet led the way at the plate with a 4-4 game, 2 doubles and 4 RBI. Kara Young 3-4 with 3 Runs and a doulbe. Alicia Hatzel hit her second triple of the weekend. Christy Andy also wnet 2-4 with 2 runs. Game 4: SOCS 7, Junction City 0. “Junction City played their way back through the bracket for a rematch. Every player reached base at least once and defensively we were error free against a better hitting day from the Tigers.” Kara Young, Sam Sundet and Helena Carocci had doubles. Young scored three runs. Game 5: SOCS 1, Elmira Crushers 4. “We played 0-0 ballgame into the seventh. We made many outstanding defensive plays to keep the score at zero and hit the ball hard and solid, but right at people. The Elmira pitcher was probably the second best pitcher we have faced all summer with good movement and control.” Breanne Johnson and Sam Sundet combined for a six hitter, but a few hits and errors in the seventh gave Elmira the lead. In the seventh Alicia Hatzel led off with a single, moved over to second with a hit up the middle by Kirby Neale. Alisha Charitar came up and hit a double to opposite field that bounced over the fence for a ground rule double that scored only one. “That was all we could muster up for second place. Wednesday of this week we will host the Oregon Reign for a doubleheader "friendly". On Thursday, we head back up to Newberg for a four day tournament - NAFA Western World Series. We will open on Thursday against two teams from Washington. The 14U team will also be competing at this tournament opening Thursday night against a team out of Seattle.”
Oregon Tuna Classic
The first of four legs of this year’s Oregon Tuna Classic was held Saturday off the Central Oregon Coast with competing boats departing Newport and Depoe Bay. Strong north winds had pushed the warm water out to beyond 60-miles and scattered the schools. Out of the 36-teams that left port early in the morning, 19 returned with tuna, and only 12 had the required minimum of five. A total of 78 tuna was caught, weighing in at 1,510 lbs. The tuna was donated to Lincoln Co. Food Share. Team Engage, from Ilwaco, WA, won the weigh-in with 105.55 lbs. Team Gales Creek Tuna Gaffers was second with 104.2 lbs, followed by Team Green Lightning Laundry with 104.10 lbs. The second leg of the 2010 Classic will take place at Ilwaco, WA on July 31st. The strong winds prevented a lot of boats from leaving Port. Del Stephens, Chair of the OTC, says they had 60 teams sign up. However, at the awards BBQ later that night, more than 300 people participated.
Blazers
Rich Cho was introduced as the new General Manager of the Portland Trailblazers Monday in the Rose City. Cho replaces Kevin Pritchard who was fired earlier. The 45-year old Cho was most recently an assistant GM with the Oklahoma City Thunder, formerly the Seattle Sonics. He an Evergreen State native having attended high school in Federal Way, WA and graduating from Washington State with a degree in Engineering.
UO track
Freshman Anne Kesselring wrapped up her 2010 season with a runner-up finish in the 1,500 meters at the national German Athletic Championships Sunday in Braunschweig. The Nurnberg, Germany, native ran 4:17.17, finishing behing Diana Sujew, who won in 4:13.69. Meanwhile, the last Duck in competition this summer, Jordan Hasay, begins her double in the IAAF World Junior Championships tonight with the 3,000 meters in Moncton, Canada. Moncton is located in the Canadian province of New Brunswick due east of Maine, and is on Atlantic Daylight Time (four hours ahead of the American West Coast), thus the race is scheduled to begin at 3:25 p.m. PDT. Hasay was also chosen as one of Team USA's captains. The freshman from Arroyo Grande, Calif., is slated to run the 1,500 meter prelims on Friday with the final on Sunday.
