LNG
With his second term as Governor of Oregon winding down this year, Governor Ted Kulongoski says he has never believed supporters of liquefied natural gas could make an argument of need for LNG, and doesn’t think they have ever made a case. The Democrat was on the North Oregon Coast Wednesday and was referring to the now bankrupt Bradwood Landing LNG import terminal that was proposed on the Columbia River just east of the Clatsop County seat. The governor also questioned “why are we spending all this money, all this time, all this debate if they can’t tell me there’s a need for this.” He says the state is still pursuing an appeal in federal court on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s certification of the Bradwood site just to make sure someone else doesn’t buy it. Two other proposed LNG terminals are still active in the state. Oregon LNG would like to build west of Astoria in the Warrenton area and the Jordan Cove Energy Project is targeting Coos Bay’s North Spit.

Bald Eagle
It’s a symbol of America. The Bald Eagle. The symbol met the low end of American life last Thursday when a one-year old female Bald Eagle was found stuck in about a foot of much in a sewage pond on the North Oregon Coast. Plant workers at Nehalem rescued the bird and transported it to the Astoria Wildlife Center for the North Coast in Astoria. Staff members had to clean her feathers four times to remove the effluent and smell. Her strength was then tested in the center’s large “flight cage,” before she was released back into the wild.

Paddling the Pacific
Her goal is to draw attention to the health of Earth’s oceans. Margo Pellegrino is paddling the West Coast from Seattle to San Diego. Her journey began July 3rd and as of Friday, July 23rd, the 43-year old had made it to Florence on the Central Oregon Coast. She explains her mission on her website: www.seattle2sandiego.com. “So with all this going wrong in our oceans and planet, the question I ask is “does no one know or does no one care”? This is why I paddle. For those who do not know, I paddle to inform and for those who don’t care, I paddle to inspire. Paddling through coastal communities is sufficiently unusual to be a newsworthy event. Even though coastal areas occupy only about 10% of the land area of our country, nearly 50% of our population either lives or works in coastal communities. So hitting the media markets along 3,500 miles of it just might not be such a crazy idea after all. Perhaps more importantly, my message is also making its way to the elected officials and policymakers who represent them.” She hopes to arrive in San Diego during the Labor Day Weekend in early September.

Coos Bay, North Bend DHS/OHA budget forum slated for July 26
The Oregon Department of Human Services and Oregon Health Authority will host a community budget forum Monday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to noon at Southwestern Oregon Community College. The event, eighth in a statewide series, is designed to engage community members in a discussion of local needs and priorities as the agencies begin to develop their budgets for the 2011-2013 biennium. The event will be an interactive video conference with agency leaders participating from Salem. "The feedback we receive through the community forums will help form the budget priorities for DHS and OHA in the coming two years," said Director Bruce Goldberg. "As the rising need for human services continues, we cannot forget that every number on a spreadsheet represents real people. The planning we do today helps us build a strong foundation so that we can move forward no matter what happens." During the forum, DHS and OHA leaders will review the past two years' highlights. They also will ask for input from participants revolving around key service areas: seniors and people with disabilities; children, adults and families; addictions and mental health; and health. Participant discussion will center on four questions: • What services are most beneficial to your community? • How would you prioritize the 2011-2013 budget? • What is your top priority for making services better? • What can communities do to get ready for coming budget shortfalls? Community members are encouraged to get involved through the forums, helping the Department of Human Services and the Oregon Health Authority work toward a healthy, independent and safe future for all Oregonians. Join DHS and OHA at Empire Hall on the Southwestern Oregon Community College Campus, 1988 Newmark Ave, Coos Bay, for this important discussion. For more information, visit www.oregon.gov/dhs or www.oregon.gov/oha, or find us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/communityforum.
