Oregon Coast News - September 2, 2009
Daily news and sports coverage for the Oregon coast plus a variety of guides and directories useful to Oregon residents and visitors.
Senator Wyden
One of Oregon’s two U.S. Senators will visit the South Coast this week. Senior Senator Ron Wyden (D) has scheduled four town hall meetings Friday and Saturday. The Democrat will speak in the gym at Gold Beach High School on Friday, Sept. 4th, at 11 a.m., followed by another session at Sunset Middle School in Coos Bay at 4:30 p.m. Senator Wyden will hold two more town hall meetings on Saturday. At 10:30a.m. at Reedsport High School and 1:30 p.m. at Siuslaw High School in Florence. The national health care controversy is expected to be the general topic and the reason for the larger than normal locations.
Kitzhaber
Speculation continues to mount and an announcement is expected this week that former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber is ready to return to Salem in a bid to become governor once again. If the former emergency room doctor from Roseburg decides to run, it could impact two other candidates with ties to Coos County. Kitzhaber is reportedly leaning towards pursuing an unprecedented third four-year term. Oregon law limits a governor to two-consecutive terms. Current Governor Ted Kulongoski is in his second term. Former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, who is a part-time resident of Bandon and began his political career on the South Coast, is also preparing a bid to run for the state’s highest office. The former State Representative and State Senator said a decision by Kitzhaber won’t sway his campaign one way or another. Coos Bay native and now State Representative Brian Clem (D-Salem) who is on a “listening tour” of the state to consider a possible run, stated earlier he would withdraw if Kitzhaber entered the race.
Labor Day Weekend
State, county and city police officers in Oregon and nationwide are continuing to zero in on dangerous and impaired drivers during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend as part of the 2009 crackdown against impaired drivers. The national campaign" Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." kicked off August 21st and continues through Labor Day weekend, September 7th. During the first ten days of this year's national DUII crackdown, Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers reported a large jump in the number of impaired driver arrests. Between August 21st and 31st, DUII driver arrests by OSP troopers jumped over 60 percent in comparison to the first ten days of last year's campaign. The Labor Day holiday period is historically the second deadliest on Oregon roads. On average since 1970, seven traffic-related deaths occur in Oregon each year during Labor Day holiday. Eleven people died during last year's Labor Day holiday period in 9 separate fatal traffic crashes. Nine of the deaths were alcohol or drug involved.
Airplane
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victims of Sunday morning’s fatal airplane wreck at Canyon Mountain as a Roseburg couple. According to a news release, the plane carrying 71-year old Ernie and 70-year old Elaina Knigge went down about 9:30 a.m. They were reportedly en route to Grants Pass. The FAA and NTSB are still investigating the cause of the accident.
Traffic
A couple of traffic accidents slowed traffic on Hwy. 101 Monday, August 31st. According to reports, the coastal route was backed up on the North Oregon Coast Monday evening following an accident in Clatsop County. Detours around the crash scene reportedly extended a normal 20-minute drive between Warrenton and Seaside to an hour. The accident was reported at 5 p.m., and the Oregon Department of Transportation said the roadway was clear and traffic flowing once again by 6:30 p.m. Hwy. 101 was reduced to a single lane on the Central Oregon Coast earlier Monday from 6 a.m. to noon after a chip truck overturned near the Sea Lion Caves north of Florence.
Print paintings
They’re making their mark in the art world. Two resident sea lions at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport have been trained to use a paint brush and stroke a canvas with colors and styles of their choosing. The result is prints that are selling fast in the tourism/educational facility’s gift shop with all proceeds going back to support the non-profit aquarium. Jen DeGroot came up with the idea and her two artists, “Lea” and “Max” have been turning out the “flipper art.” DeGroot says her original goal was to just keep the mammals from getting bored.
