Capsizing
Out of the six thrown into the ocean waters on the North Oregon Coast Monday afternoon only two had life jackets on, but all made it to shore safely. According to a U.S. Coast Guard report, a 21-foot boat capsized near the entrance to Nehalem Bay about 12:55 p.m. Three made it to shore, the other three swam to the South Jetty and then were assisted by rescuers to shore. Five were transported to Tillamook County Hospital with minor injuries.

Flights
It’s been six-months since SeaPort Airlines began offering commercial round-trip flights between Portland and the Oregon Coast at Astoria and Newport. Airline officials say the two flights on board the nine-passenger PC-12 airplanes to the Central Coast have exceeded expectations and made more money than the three-flights to the North Coast. Newport has reportedly had about 500 more passengers. The two communities are subsidizing the flights with $4.5 million in state and federal grants. Flights to Astoria peaked at around 80 passengers in late June, while Newport peaked the second week of August with 126 passengers.

Forestry Board to host Dynamic Ecosystems Workshop
The Oregon Board of Forestry will host a workshop on Sept. 8 to highlight and discuss an effort to link the management of Oregon's forests with latest scientific understanding of the ways in which ecosystems change. Scientists today recognize forests are not static systems that, if left undisturbed by humans, will remain in equilibrium over time. Nor is the change always gradual. Rather, the life of a forest tends to be marked by episodes of significant change, such as wildfires, insect outbreaks, and storms and floods. How to apply this concept to forest management and forest policies in Oregon will be a key focus of the workshop. The workshop is open to the public. It will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Oregon Garden Resort, 895 West Main St., in Silverton. Accommodations for people with disabilities, and special materials, services or assistance can be arranged by calling the Oregon Department of Forestry Agency Affairs Office at least 48 hours before the meeting - 503-945-7200, text telephone 503-945-7213 (in Salem). Background information on the Dynamic Forest Ecosystems work plan process can be found at: www.oregon.gov/odf. Click on the link, "Ecosystem dynamics and forest management" shown under "Spotlight on ODF." More information on the Board of Forestry can be found at www.oregon.gov/ODF/BOARD/. OREGON COAST SPORTS

Blount
Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount, suspended from participating in any more Duck football games the rest of the season, didn’t attend Monday’s practice in Eugene. The senior is being kept on scholarship and has all benefits afforded under a scholarship except suiting up against an opponent. Blount was suspended after punching Boise State’s Byron Hout following Oregon’s 19-8 loss last Thursday in Idaho. Hout was not suspended, but disciplined internally, for taunting Blount and tapping him on the shoulder pads following the game. The Western Athletic Conference commission did criticize the video replay technician for showing the hit repeatedly on the stadium’s scoreboard.

Kentuck
The last “FORE” rang out Monday at the public Kentuck Golf Course on the northern end of the Coos Bay estuary. Built nearly 50 years ago, the 18-hole course shutdown Monday after the last golfers sank their putts on Labor Day, Sept. 7th due to financial considerations. Wally Wickett purchased the course in 1964, and it has been in the Culp Family ownership since then. The future of the facility will most likely not resemble a golf course, however. Officials with the Jordan Cove Energy Project have entered an agreement to purchase the land and use it for wetlands mitigation if their proposed liquefied natural gas import terminal is built on the North Spit of Coos Bay. The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay has also entered into an option to purchase whatever Jordan Cove does not use for similar mitigation purposes. Kentuck’s shutdown leaves Sunset Bay and Watson Ranch as the only courses in the Bay Area. The Elks still have a course at Lee Valley between Myrtle Point and Coquille, and Forest Hills is located in Reedsport. There are also three golfing operations in the Bandon area led by Bandon Dunes’ five courses.
