Coquille Tribe
The City of North Bend has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the Coquille Indian Tribe and its Coquille Economic Development Corporation, which own and operate the Mill Casino/Hotel/RV Park in North Bend. The Agreement between the City and Tribe provides for payments to the City for municipal services, including police and fire protection, as well as public works and sewer system services.” The City claims the Tribe failed to make its first quarterly payment of $115,000 this year, and alleges that the Tribe “has also informed the City that it will not make its second quarterly payment for $115,000 that will come due on October 1, 2009, and that the tribe will also not pay hotel/motel tax due on October 15, 2009, as required by the Agreement.” The City alleges as a result of the breach they’ll have to immediately cut more than half-a-million dollars from the current fiscal year budget, eliminate one police officer position, and terminate a fire and parks department employee by Nov. 1, 2009.

Coos Co. Assessor
Coos County taxpayers will have an opportunity to meet with the assessor, Adam Colby , during scheduled town hall property tax meetings. Colby will provide a power point presentation, which overviews the Oregon property tax system, and answer taxpayer questions regarding assessments in the Coos County real estate market. Oregon’s constitution limits the increase in taxable assessed value for each property to 3% per year, unless there have been changes made to the property such as new construction or additions, new partitions, or removal from special assessment or exemption programs. The majority of property owners in Coos County have a taxable assessed value much lower than their real market value and will see the required 3% increase in their taxable value. It is important to note that even though the real estate market for residential properties continues to decline, the assessed value of most properties will still see a 3% increase this year as required under the constitution because the assessed value is still lower than the real market value. Lakeside City Council Chambers Sept. 24th; Myrtle Point Library Sept. 29th; Coos Bay City Council Chambers Oct. 1st. All of the meetings will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Additional questions or comments can be sent directly to the assessor at: Work: 541-396-3121 Ext. 275, Cell: 541-404-5159, E-Mail: ccaoassr@co.coos.or.us, Blog: www.cooscountyassessor.com.

North Bend’s Katie Romanko (22:01) won a cross country race at Bullard’s Beach north of Bandon on Tuesday, Sept. 22nd, by three-seconds over Gold Beach’s Sydney Snook (22:04), while the Bulldogs’ Zach Reichenberger (18:44) came in second overall in the boy’s race. Eleven teams competed. The Bulldog boys placed first, and the girls were third. Coach Tracy Heley, “The races went very well. It was definitely a challenging course with the large amount of sand in the second mile. The athletes had a fast first mile and then struggled to put in surges in the second mile. Our top girl, Katie Romanko gained ground in mile 2 and was then able to pull ahead during the 3rd mile. She did not run the PRE in hopes of doing well at Bandon. It paid off for her! Our number two girl, Zenora Burris was ill and was not able to compete, however my girls pulled together to place 3rd. Many of the girls ran the PRE so I thought this was quite an accomplishment. On the boys side Zach Reichenburger continues to impress me with his work ethic and attitude. He really wants to do well this season and is doing all the right things to make this happen. He led our boys team to and outstanding 1st place finish in the team scores. This too was quite an accomplishment considering that 8 of my top 9 runners ran the PRE hard. In fact at the PRE 10 of my kids had their life time best PRE times! I love these young people and admire their work ethic and character.” NB Girl’s results: 5,000 Meters Varsity/JV Combined - 1 Katie Romanko 22:01 NBnd 11; 8 Kelli Kronsberg 24:19 NBnd 12; 14 Courtney Greif 25:24 NBnd 10; 24 Larissa Schreiber 27:11 NBnd 9; 28 Jessica Head 27:42 NBnd 12; 29 Alycia Brainard 27:46 NBnd 12; 32 Emalie Gauntz 28:43 NBnd 9; 33 Andrea Bigler 28:48 NBnd 12; 35 Elizabeth Beechly 29:08 NBnd 11; 40 Nichell Cunningham 29:52 NBnd 11; 41 Kenzie Cossey 29:55 NBnd 10; 443 Brittany Orchard 30:12 NBnd 10; 44 Kortney Potts 30:25 NBnd 12; 46 Robin Harter 30:49 NBnd 10; 47 Yuri Hernandez 31:00 NBnd 11; 48 Ashley Brooks 33:57 NBnd 9; 49 Kaching Yim 34:56 NBnd 12.
