Oregon Coast News - October 8, 2009

Daily news and sports coverage for the Oregon coast plus a variety of guides and directories useful to Oregon residents and visitors.

CB Visitor’s Ctr.
By a 4-2 vote, the Coos Bay City Council Tuesday night approved having the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce continue managing its downtown Visitor’s information Center. The Chamber has been managing the welcome center for a number of years, however, a rift between the two groups developed earlier this year and the Chamber decided to terminate the agreement in early October. The city opted to request bids for management operations, but only the Chamber responded. Interim City Manager Rodger Craddock says the new agreement, with details “hammered out” between Craddock and Chamber Executive Director Timm Slater, will pay the Chamber $63,000 annually. Craddock says the city did consider another option in running it themselves. The new contract will be year-to-year with a rollover clause, according to Craddock. Slater says the Chamber will operate, staff and run the Visitor’s Information Center, but maintain separate offices across the street in the Historic Hub Building.

Girly Checks Personal Bank Checks

Ship mural
The mural on the north side wall of the old IOOF Building in downtown Coos Bay needs touching up, and the City’s Urban Renewal Agency (URA) has entered into an agreement with a local businessman to revitalize it. The mural depicts an operating tug boat, but has faded over the years and the lower portion has been “dinged up” by vehicles utilizing the city owned parking lot. Mike Vaughn offered to do the work and will be reimbursed for up to $10,000. Interim City Manager Rodger Craddock says Vaughn expects to complete the project in two-weeks.

Chamber
The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce’s paid staff has been cut by a third. The Chamber will now operate with two paid staff members, while one has been laid off. Chamber President Sherry Yarbrough says they currently have 567 members in the Chamber, lost 42 this year, but brought in 29 for a net loss of 13. The Chamber’s Executive Board has been reviewing its revenue and expenses and acting Treasurer Chris Christoffer says they have “more belt tightening to do.” The Chamber will also review its Independent Business Operator’s weekly forums at the Mill Casino/Hotel in North Bend. Yarbrough says among consideration will be to hold it monthly or twice a month. She adds attendance is down for the IBO luncheons and they have not been as successful as they would like in attracting sponsors. The Chamber is looking at more fund-raisers. A bowling event held at North Bend Lanes in August produced about $1,000 in additional revenue, and more is expected Oct. 30th from a Halloween “Monster Bash” costume event at the Mill Casino/Hotel. Yarbrough says the Mill is donating the use of the Salmon Room with the only expense $100 for a no-host bar. St. John Entertainment has also agreed to a trade for membership to provide a DJ and music for the 7 to 10 p.m. event. Cost will be $10 per person. More information about the “Monster Bash” is available through the Chamber office at (541) 266-0868.

Swine Flu concerns
With flu season nearing, City of North Bend officials are preparing to prevent the spread of the deadly “Swine Flu,” or H1N1, within their community. City Administrator Jan Willis says she and Police Chief Steve Scibelli recently listened in to a national conference about the “Swine Flu” to learn more about the virus. She called the presentation “an eye opener.” The satellite conference was put on by Department of Human Services and Homeland Security. Willis says she will order more hand sanitizers for the staff and added washing your hands frequently and keeping sick employees away from work are two of the better prevention steps. Southwestern Oregon Community College interim President Patty Scott says they have also been learning more about the “Swine Flu.” She says the county will provide 200 flu shots to their on campus housing, but admits “that’s not enough.” To learn more about H1N1, go to www.flu.gov.

Charleston
Another sign that summer has come to an end on the South Oregon Coast, the seasonal Charleston Visitor’s Information Center has closed. Volunteer Mel Campbell says they had about 8,000 visitors come through the center this year at the west end of the drawbridge. The center will reopen by next Memorial Day.

Community Building
The Community Building on Broadway Avenue in North Bend will soon look a little different. City Administrator Jan Willis says the flat roofs on both the east and west sides have run their course and a contractor will soon build pitch roofs changing the look and also reducing future maintenance costs.

SORA
Southwest Oregon Regional Airport could have a new executive director by the end of the month. Coos County Airport District Commissioner Joe Benetti says they are now down to three candidates to replace Gary LeTellier who is retiring at the end of the year. The three finalists, out of 31 that originally applied for the more than $100,000 a year salaried position, will be interviewed on Oct. 20th. Benetti also says northbound air service to Portland is now down to one per day because of the winter drop-off, but he adds they are negotiating with Alaska Air as part of a possible co-share for flight transfers at Portland International Airport. Benetti says a stumbling block is the need for a new $2 million reservation system.

DEQ Issues $5,079 in Penalties to Coquille Man for Open Burning and Solid Waste Violations
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued penalties totaling $5,079 to Coquille resident John W. Scheirman for open burning and solid waste violations at a rural property near Coquille. DEQ issued Scheirman a $2,829 penalty after investigating an Oregon State Police report of open burning of waste tires, solid waste and other prohibited materials at 60341 Fairview Road near Coquille in January 2009. Scheirman lived on and controlled about 40 acres of the site, which covers slightly more than 80 acres and is owned by a family trust. Firefighters from the Fairview Rural Fire Department, responding to a 911 call from a school bus driver, extinguished the fire and observed the remnants of approximately 40 to 50 waste tires in the pile of burnt debris. Oregon law prohibits open burning of tires, plastics, household waste and any other material that gives off dense smoke or noxious odors when burned. This type of burning contributes to air pollution and can cause health problems for children, the elderly and persons with respiratory illness. DEQ also issued a $2,250 penalty to Scheirman after observing and documenting disposal of waste material on the property, including useless or discarded appliances, construction and demolition debris, scrap metal, useless or discarded furniture, plastic sheeting and the remnants of a dismantled mobile home. Waste such as this can only be disposed of at a permitted solid waste disposal facility. Scheirman also violated Oregon law by storing approximately 500 used tires on the property. In addition, Scheirman placed waste, including portions of the waste burned in the January fire, above and along the banks of an intermittent stream that runs through the property and drains into the north fork of the Coquille River. DEQ did not issue a penalty for these violations. Scheirman later made an effort to minimize the impacts of his violations and later took steps to properly dispose of the solid waste and charred remains of the open burn. DEQ considered these efforts when determining the total amount of the penalties. Scheirman has until Oct. 21 to appeal the penalties.

Marshfield’s volleyball team won a closed 5A Midwestern League match at Willamette in Eugene Wednesday night. The Lady Pirates prevailed 3-2 in a see-saw battle that saw the Wolverines take a 2-1 lead before Marshfield dominated the fourth game and then won by three in the fifth and deciding game, 22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14, 15-12.

Marshfield beat Springfield 1-0 in boy’s 5A Midwestern League Soccer Wednesday at Pete Susick Stadium in Coos Bay. Coach Karl Kennedy, “Very good showing from the Pirates. Finally put together a nearly full game of good ball control and defense. We've been working hard to find the right combination of fielders and it seems we may have found it. Our defense was solid from every position, goal tending saved the win, and mid field control by Junior Nate Biersen and Sophomore Kelley Kennedy helped the Pirates get their first win of the season. Our attack was sustained and the best so far this year. Wingers Angel Duarte and Nick Henriquez carried the ball well while forwards Alex Flaherty and Agustin Cervera kept the Miller defense back on their heals. The win was, as expected, a team win. Every Pirate played hard and, as always, did not quit. The difference in this game was the patience the team had throughout the contest. Their patience allowed for ball control and proper positioning without becoming frustrated.
Our next game is Oct 14 at Thurston, our goal is to continue to execute with patience.”
Shots: MHS 7; SF 3; Saves: MHS 6; SF 6; Fouls: MHS 5; SF 7; Scorers: MHS; Alex Flaherty beat the Miller keeper on the inside post from a center to outside pass assist from Nate Biersen in the 19th minute of the second half.
