Daily news and sports coverage for the Oregon coast plus a variety of guides and directories useful to Oregon residents and visitors.
Coho fishing
They’re still considered an Endangered Species; however, wild Coho salmon is rebounding in Oregon’s streams and rivers. Complicated formulas are used by fish biologists to develop models that lead to regulations and quotas for sport anglers, but those on the river say they are seeing larger runs and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has opened some limited fishing opportunities. For the first time since 1994, anglers were allowed to fish for non-fin clipped Coho on four western Oregon rivers, including two in Coos County, the Coos and Coquille River. Quotas have already been filled for the 1,000 allowed on the Coos, 500 on the Yaquina and 1,000 on the Nehalem. But the Coquille River’s 1,500 allotment was less than half filled as of Oct. 11th. The fishery will remain open until Nov. 30th, unless the quota is achieved before then. Fishermen would like to see quotas approved for the Umpqua and Siuslaw rivers as well, but biologists says the “spawning ground counts” have been too low. However, a fishery does look good for the years 2011 and 2012 on those two rivers because of the current strong returns. Two coastal lakes have also rebounded. Both Siltcoos, in Lane County, and Tahkenitch, in Douglas County, now have permanent fisheries for Coho after a successful trial basis began in 2003. Anglers can take one non-fin clipped Coho per day, five in a year, between Oct. 1st and Dec. 31st.

Murder charges
The mysterious disappearance of a North Oregon Coast fisherman took a turn Tuesday afternoon with the arrest of a 47-year old Pacific City male on murder charges. Oregon State Police detectives arrested Erin Dean Rieman, a co-owner of the fishing vessel “Tiger” from Garibaldi, the vessel 53-year old John Curtis Adkins was last seen on over the Fourth of July holiday. The two, along with another person, left Garibaldi on the 48-foot boat en route to Ilwaco, WA. Adkins had not been heard from since he was last sighted July 5th at the Port of Ilwaco. Rieman returned to Garibaldi, near Tillamook, with the boat. Adkins’ family reported the Albany resident missing on July 7th. His body has not been found.
LNG
Former Port of Astoria Executive Director Peter Gearin, who was dismissed from his position in 2007 following a felony conviction of the Clean Water Act over his role with the port involving dredge fill violations, allegedly used his position to secure work for his former girlfriend, now wife, with a company interested in building a liquefied natural gas terminal near Warrenton on the Columbia River. The Oregon Attorney General’s Office claims it can prove official misconduct, however a two-year statute of limitation on the misdemeanor has expired. An attorney for Gearin says there was no impropriety on his client’s behalf. The alleged misconduct; however, may impact a controversial lease the port signed for 96-acres on Skipanon Peninsula with the Calpine Corp. to build an LNG import terminal. Calpine went bankrupt in 2006 and sold the port’s lease to Leucadia National Corp. of New York, the parent company of Oregon LNG. The Port and Oregon LNG are currently involved in litigation over the lease. Oregon LNG is one of three proposed LNGs in the state. Bradwood Landing is proposed east of Astoria, also on the Columbia River, and the Jordan Cove Energy Project would like to build an import terminal on Coos Bay’s North Spit.
