SORA hiring
The Board of Commissioners for the Coos County Airport District will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, 3:30 p.m., in the District Board Room at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, to take action on a contract for a new executive director. The agenda calls for a “review and discuss new executive director’s contract,” and “accept executive director’s contract.” The position will reportedly pay more than $100,000 a year.

“Filly”
Her name is “Filly;” however, if migrating geese could talk, they would have another name for the Border Collie that roams the open areas of Southwest Regional Airport in North Bend. “Filly” has been trained by her handler, and airport employee Bob Hood, to “shoo” the geese and other birds away from the runways to prevent collisions with airplanes. This is the time of year when migratory birds see the inviting large open grassy areas next to the runways and soar to the ground. That’s not a good thing for pilots attempting to land or take off from SORA. One bird in a prop, or smashed through a windshield, could bring the aircraft down. Hood says they started the program in 1998 after a collision with a Horizon commercial flight. Since then there has only been one major incident and than involved a Gulf Stream III out of Los Angeles that sustained extensive damage in 2003, but luckily no injuries to those on board the jet. “Filly” isn’t on duty everyday, but Hood says between the pure bred, and employees in Operations and Maintenance, they do a good job of keeping the migrating birds doing just that – migrating. “Filly” is the third dog Hood has trained to eradicate the airfield of birds. He says it takes about three months to train the proper dog, and says the canine has to have the drive in the first place to chase birds and good obedience.
