Another body
Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of the Lincoln County Medical Examiner, is investigating the Sunday afternoon discovery of the partial remains of an unidentified body found on the beach in Yachats. According to OSP Sergeant Justin McGladrey, on December 13, 2009 at about 3:30 p.m. a citizen walking on the beach in Yachats reported finding the partial remains of a body that appeared to have been in the ocean before washing ashore. OSP troopers and Yachats Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. The remains were found about one mile north of where another body was found December 3rd in the surf line near Smelt Sands State Park. That body was positively identified five days later by the OSP Forensic Services Division as WILLIAM ARTHUR BODEWIG, age 62, from Yachats. BODEWIG was one of two men reported missing November 18th after they failed to return from a local fishing trip between Yachats and Heceta Head. The second man remains missing.

Oregon Tuna Classic
Final numbers have been released for this past summer’s Oregon Tuna Classic. The four-port event resulted in the donation of 18,600 lbs. of tuna to local food banks, and since its inception in 2005, the OTC has donated over 44,300 lbs. and $103,000 to the Oregon Food Bank. According to a news release, that cash donation helped the Oregon Food Bank purchase six pounds of food for every dollar donated, resulting in an equivalent of over 662,300 pounds of food to help needy individuals and families. The competing teams fished for tuna out of Newport, Charleston, Ilwaco, WA and Garibaldi. Teams came from not only Oregon and Washington, but Montana, Idaho and California as well. 2010 dates: July 17, Newport; July 31, Ilwaco, WA; Aug 14, Charleston; Aug 28, Garibaldi.

North Coast geology
The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) has released a report on Coastal Erosion Hazard Zones in Southern Clatsop County, Oregon: Seaside to Cape Falcon. The complete release can be found at: http://www.oregongeology.org. The coast of southern Clatsop County, Oregon has a notorious history of large deep seated landslides that have severely impacted coastal development. In February 1961, heavy precipitation destabilized a 3,000-foot-long by 1,000-foot-wide landslide that closed Ecola State Park. Perhaps more famous is the February 3, 1974, Silver Point landslide that involved over 2 million cubic yards of material, that vertically displaced U.S. Highway 101 by 35 feet and laterally shifted houses near the landslide 50 to 80 feet westward. The active-hazard zone for southern Clatsop County encompasses areas of dune and bluff-backed shorelines, and coastal bluffs and dunes undergoing active erosion, whether by extreme wave erosion, near-shore sediment transport, gradual erosion, or mass wasting processes. Areas of particular concern include active landslides within Ecola State Park; the area west of Tolovana Hill, including the S-Curves landslide in Cannon Beach; landslides at Silver Point; areas at the southern end of Arcadia Beach north of Hug Point; and the entire Falcon Cove community.

Oregon’s unemployment rate
Oregon’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 11.1 percent in November from the revised October figure of 11.2 percent. This was its lowest since the rate was 10.7 percent in February, and was down from the high of 12.2 percent in May. Oregon’s unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in November 2008. The U.S. seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 10.2 percent in October and 10.0 percent in November. The October rate was its highest level in 26 years. In November, Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment dropped by 4,600 jobs, following a loss of 1,800 (as revised) in October.

Taxes in Oregon
A new study by an Oregon State University economist comparing Oregon's taxes with national averages has found that taxes are lower in Oregon than in most states, and so are some public services. Even with passage of Measures 66 and 67, Oregon state taxes will be lower than the national average, according to the report. In the study, OSU Extension Service economist William Jaeger compared tax data in Oregon with all other states over a period of 17 years. Jaeger compared total state taxes to total personal income for each state to reveal how much of people's income is paid in state taxes. His data show that as a percentage of personal income, state taxes maintain a fairly steady level of about 6.4 percent nationwide, dipping a bit lower during periods of recession. Oregon's taxes follow a similar trend, but at a lower level, averaging 6.0 percent of personal income. And the nationwide dips in tax revenue during the current and previous recessions show even deeper reductions in Oregon. Oregon is ranked 44th in the nation in terms of taxes as a percentage of personal income. Taxes in neighboring Washington (ranked 30th) and California (ranked 15th) claim a larger proportion of personal income.

The Buckeyes not only own the series, but the Ducks have never beaten this “OSU.” Ohio State is 7-0 against Oregon. Their first meeting was in the 1958 Rose Bowl won by the Big Ten team, 10-7. That’s the history of the series between the two schools and the Ducks hope to write a new chapter in 2010. Both teams enter the “Granddaddy of them all” bowl game with matching 10-2 records. The Ducks lost to Boise State and Stanford, while Ohio State fell to USC and Purdue. Two teams Oregon beat this year in reaching ten wins. Oregon is 0-2 in the Rose Bowl against the Big Ten. Losing that ’58 game, and then the 1995 contest against Penn State, Oregon’s last appearance in the Rose Bowl. The Ducks’ lone Rose Bowl win came in 1917, 14-0 over Pennsylvania. Kickoff is set for 2:10 p.m.
