FERC approval
By a 3-1 vote, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved Thursday, Dec. 17th, an application to build a proposed liquefied natural gas import terminal on Coos Bay’s North Spit. The approval of the Jordan Cove Energy Project’s application is just another step, although a required one, in the lengthy permitting process that involves state approval as well. Jordan Cove is one of three proposed LNGs in Oregon. Bradwood Landing, east of Astoria on the Columbia River, is considered the furthest along in the permitting process, while Oregon LNG, also proposed for the Columbia River but west of Astoria near Warrenton, is a distant third.

Rape conviction
A 44-year old North Bend male was found guilty by a Coos County Jury Thursday evening in Coquille following a three-day trial of six-counts of Rape in the First Degree for having sexual intercourse with his under-aged step daughter on multiple occasions between September 1, 2008 and April 30, 2009. Kenneth Everett Moore, who led pursuing police on a vehicle chase from North Bend to Coquille on May 20, 2009 when they attempted to arrest him, was also found guilty of Felony Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and misdemeanor counts of Attempting to Elude a Police Officer and Reckless Driving. In addition, Judge Richard Barron found Moore guilty of 27-counts of Contempt of Court for violating 27-times a domestic violence prevention restraining order. Sentencing has been set for January 11, 2010, 1:30 p.m., at the courthouse in Coquille.

Barricaded
For the second time in as many days, a distraught Coos Co. female held Sheriff’s deputies at bay during a standoff at a rural residence. This time it occurred Wednesday night on West Catching Road, east of Coos Bay. According to a news release, deputies originally went to Roseanna Henriksen’s residence about 4:17 p.m. after she had allegedly threatened suicide to her boyfriend. She was found not to be a threat to herself or others and the deputies left. Twenty minutes later she called the Sheriff’s Office and was allegedly threatening to do harm to herself and others “with an arsenal of weapons.” A two-hour standoff ensued “where Ms. Henriksen would come out of the residence off and on brandishing the rifle wanting the deputies to come get her.” A trained negotiator was able to talk her into surrendering about 7:15 p.m. Henriksen was transported to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay on a Mental Hold. Another 45-year old woman was arrested Tuesday morning near Lee Valley after she allegedly fired shots at her sister and a neighbor while intoxicated. A tactical team from Douglas Co. was brought in to resolve the situation peacefully.

H1N1 Vaccine Clinic Scheduled December 19 at Pony Village Mall & Recalled Vaccine
Coos County Public Health has scheduled an H1N1 flu vaccination clinic on Saturday, December 19, at 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Pony Village Mall in North Bend, on a drop-in basis. The eligibility has been expanded to include everyone, not just priority groups. “Coos County Public Health expects to have enough vaccine to immunize 1,000 persons next Saturday,” reports Lena Hawtin, Immunization Coordinator. The vaccine is free, and no one can pay out of pocket at the clinic, although insurance may be billed for persons whose insurance pays for the administration of the H1N1 vaccine. Most of the vaccine provided will be in the form of shots, although nose spray will be available. Coos County providers have checked their vaccine records and did not receive any of the vaccine that
was recently recalled; no children vaccinated at medical clinics in Coos County were affected. Ms. Hawtin noted that the recalled vaccine was the half-dose formulation for children 6 months – 35 months of age, and that it was not a question of safety, but an inadequate amount of the antigen, or active ingredient. Parents are reminded that children under the age of 10 years old need two doses of vaccine, 30 days apart, to develop full immunity, although 1 dose is estimated to be 75% effective in this age group. For more information about H1N1, call Coos County Public Health at 756-2020, ext. 580, the Oregon Hotline, 1-800-978-3040, and go to the websites www.flu.oregon.gov and www.co.coos.or.us.

Hazard Tree Removal Begins at LaVerne County Park
The Bureau of Land Management will begin removing trees and pruning limbs at LaVerne County Park that pose a threat to visitor’s safety on December 21, 2009. The work is expected to be completed within three weeks. Portions of the park will be closed to visitors during the operation, but visitor parking will be available. In total, the BLM will be pruning, topping or removing about 108 trees. “Some of the trees in the park are rotten or have features that could cause them to fall,” said Dennis Turowski, BLM field manager. “We want to get the work done now so the site will be safe and ready for the start of the prime camping season in the spring.” Visitors can contact LaVerne County Park at 541-396-2344, the Coos County Parks Department at 541-396-3121 ext. 354, or the Bureau of Land Management at 541-756-0100 for additional information. The BLM retained the rights and management responsibility for the trees at LaVerne Park when the county park was formed on congressionally withdrawn federal land in 1926.

Found
His vehicle was found over an embankment near Little River Road in Glide on March 24th, 2008. A subsequent search of the area, as well as the river, turned up no trace of Michael Patrick Mallory. The Douglas Co. Sheriff’s Office now reports the 52-year old Mallory has been found. According to a news release, at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego, CA notified them that Mallory was attempting to cross the border from Mexico to the United States. Listed as a missing person on national law enforcement computers, he was stopped, questioned and released. Malloy stated he had been living in the San Diego area for the past eight months.

Road woes
The freezing rain that swept through Oregon Friday night, Dec. 11th and Saturday morning, did a number on Hwy. 34, the state east-west route between Waldport on the Central Oregon Coast and Philomath in the Willamette Valley. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, about 20 vehicles were stranded for nearly 13 hours overnight after a thick sheet of ice prevented passage. A ten-ton ODOT sanding truck also slid off the road and ended up on its side next to the Alsea River. Benton County Sheriff’s deputies were able to reach the stranded motorists and provide them with food, water and even gasoline to keep their vehicles operating for heat. ODOT also reported a brief closure of Hwy. 101 Saturday afternoon following a rock slide between Florence and Yachats.
