Daily news and sports coverage for the Oregon coast plus a variety of guides and directories useful to Oregon residents and visitors.
LNG & Governor
Prior to being elected for a second term as Governor of Oregon, Ted Kulongoski stated he was open to alternative energy sources, including Liquefied Natural Gas import terminals in the state. However, he also felt only one would be necessary. Today the Democrat stands opposed to any and all LNG’s within the state’s borders. After the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved a second LNG application for Oregon on Thursday in Washington D.C., the Jordan Cove Energy Project for Coos Bay, Governor Kulongoski immediately asked the federally-appointed commission to reconsider. Just as he did with the approved Bradwood Landing LNG on the Columbia River east of Astoria, the Governor, along with first term Attorney General John Kroger, has threatened to take FERC to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco to reverse the approval. The Governor now stands behind environmental concerns associated with the building of the terminals and their pipelines that will carry the natural gas to the West Coast’s main north and south transmission line in the central part of the state. FERC’s approval is just part of the lengthy permitting process that also includes state and local agencies as well.

Former Coos County Commissioner Gordon Ross is interested in regaining his old seat on the Board of Commissioners. The Coos River rancher says he will run for the position currently held by first term Commissioner Kevin Stufflebean.

North Oregon Coast closed to razor clamming due to elevated marine toxins
The Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife have announced the closure of the north Oregon Coast to recreational and commercial razor clam harvesting, from Clatsop Beach north of the Necanicum River to the mouth of the Columbia River, due to elevated levels of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs). Coastal scallops are not affected by this closure when only the adductor muscle is eaten. The consumption of whole recreationally harvested scallops is not recommended. Crab and oysters are not affected by this level of toxin and are safe to eat. Shellfish contaminated with PST can cause minor to severe illness or even death. The symptoms usually begin with tingling of the mouth and tongue. Severe poisoning can result in dizziness, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs, paralysis of the arms and legs, and paralysis of the muscles used for breathing. Shellfish toxins are produced by algae and usually originate in the ocean. Cooking will not destroy the shellfish toxins. ODA will continue to test for shellfish toxins weekly, as tides permit. Reopening of an area requires two consecutive tests in the safe range.
Explosives
Old explosives, described as unstable were safely disposed of by an Oregon State Police Bomb Squad from Central Point last Thursday north of Port Orford. A 58-year old male, reportedly cleaning out his father’s residence, came across the explosives and blasting caps. He removed them to his residence and called the Curry Co. Sheriff’s Office for assistance in disposing of them. Arriving deputies immediately secured the scene and contacted the Bomb Squad.
Standoff
A 70-year old Central Oregon Coast male who allegedly threatened to shoot himself Thursday morning at his residence in South Beach at Newport, was taken into custody peacefully following an hour-long standoff. Police officer arrived at Claude Doty’s residence to do a welfare check on him. He would not come out. After about 10 to 15 minutes, he opened the door with a handgun pointed at himself. Officers from the Oregon State Police and Lincoln Co. Sheriff’s Office joined the standoff. Doty eventually put his gun down and was taken into protective custody.
Arrest
A 19-year old Port Orford male is expected to be arraigned Monday in a Curry County Courtroom on First-Degree Arson, First-Degree Theft and two-counts of Second-Degree Burglary charges involving the break-in and fire at Pacific High School in early October. Timothy Allen Maynard was arrested in Oklahoma and extradited back to Oregon. Four juveniles, two boys and two girls, were arrested earlier for their involvement in the Oct. 7 & 8 crimes.
Boy Scouts
A Boy Scout Troop on the Central Oregon Coast is getting the boot from using Walmart’s parking lot at Newport to sell Christmas Trees next year. Scout leaders for Troop 62 were recently told by the store manager that a new corporate policy will disallow their fund-raiser because it takes up customer parking spaces. Troop 62 has been located in the southeast corner of the parking lot for 15-years. Proceeds from the sell of 200 to 300 trees annually pays for the Troops eight boys to attend summer camp, registration fees, badges and awards.
Holiday crackdown
Law enforcement leaders in Oregon announced they will be joining with thousands of other law enforcement and highway agencies across the nation during the upcoming national crackdown on impaired driving, December 16 to January 3, 2010. Drunk driving is one of America's deadliest crimes. In 2008, 11,773 people died in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. The picture for women is particularly concerning. Twenty-one percent of the 5,473 female drivers killed in crashes in 2008 had BAC levels of .08 or higher. In the past decade in Oregon, more than 2,000 individuals were killed and over 26,000 people were injured by drinking and drugged drivers. "By working together toward a common goal of reducing the incidents of drinking and drugged driving, we will enjoy a safer roadway system," Governor Ted Kulongoski wrote in proclaiming December as Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness month. "Our message is simple so there should be no excuses or exceptions: if you drive impaired you will be arrested," said Oregon State Police (OSP) Superintendent Timothy McLain.
