High winds
A high wind watch has been posted for the South Oregon Coast by the National Weather Service from Tuesday morning through Tuesday afternoon. Winds are expected to increase out of the south to 25 to 35 mph.

Out of the five fatalities reported on Oregon’s highways over the recent long holiday weekend, two occurred on Hwy. 42 near the tiny community of Remote in Southeast Coos County. There were six fatalities in 2008. The Oregon State Police report an increase in drunken driving arrests compared to last year. Between Dec. 23rd and Dec. 27th, 60 motorists were arrested for DUII, up from 50 the previous year. The Coos Bay Command Office reported 6 DUII arrests. Salem Area Command led the state with 8, followed by Portland with 7 and Grants Pass with 6. Troopers also responded to over 150 traffic crashes, and assisted 300 disabled motorists.
Quake
A 3.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday night, 9:28 p.m., just off of Cape Mendocino in Northern California. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was located 36-miles south to southwest of Eureka, CA.
Inmate mail
Incoming and outgoing mail at the Curry County Jail in Gold Beach will be restricted to postcards this year. The change is an effort to reduce contraband, discourage anti-social behavior and operating costs, according to Sheriff John Bishop. Previously, inmates could correspond through the use of normal mail; however, jail officials needed to take time to review the incoming and outgoing mail per jail policy. The postcards will reduce that necessary review. Some mail will still be allowed, such as books, newspapers, magazines and official legal or government documents. The new policy is being used in other Oregon counties as well.
Terminals
The first plan was to entomb the old World War II vessels and build a bulkhead after removing any leftover pollutants. Now, the Port of Newport on the Central Oregon Coast wants to remove the old concrete encased ships that make up their international terminal on Yaquina Bay. The two ships, Pasley and Hennibique, were sank on the site 60-years ago. However, they have deteriorated over the years and one is now listing. Voters in Newport passed a $15 million bond in 2006 to repair and rehabilitate the terminal, which has been closed since 2001. But now port officials say the cost of removing the Pasley altogether tops $5 million, not leaving much money for the building of new docks and warehouses. Another bond may be sought. They hope to start the first phase of removal this fall and complete the project by the year 2013. Newport is one of three deep water ports on the Oregon Coast. The Port of Portland and Coos Bay are the other two.

Oregon’s defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti met the press Monday in LA as part of the buildup to the Jan. 1, 2010 Rose Bowl game against Ohio State in Pasadena, CA. On how the team’s practices have gone thus far in Los Angeles: “I thought our first day down here was a very good practice. I thought yesterday was a good practice. I anticipate today will be a good practice. These kids are into it. We’re not here just to play in the Rose Bowl, we want to win. We know how important it is. It’s a big deal for us and I think we’ve practiced well and hopefully we’ll keep it up. In a couple days from now it will be hard to keep them from jumping off the walls because it will be like ‘Okay coach, it’s time to play, we’ve seen this enough times.’ All in all, I have no doubts, no fears about how we’ll play on Friday.”
Rich Brooks
Former Oregon football coach Rich Brooks is thinking about “hanging it up” again. The 68-year old, following Kentucky’s 21-13 loss in the Music City Bowl to Clemson Sunday night, told his players that he’s 80-percent sure he will retire. Brooks, who played for Oregon State back in the 60s, wants to take some time off with family to consider his future. He led the Wildcats to a 7-6 season and their four straight bowl game. The loss to the Tigers, however, snapped a three-game post season winning streak. Brooks coached the Ducks for 18-years and is credited with improving the team into a bowl contender. The field at Autzen Stadium is named in his honor.
