NB USCG member killed
A 19-year old Boise, Idaho resident serving in the United States Coast Guard died late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning following a single vehicle rollover crash on Highway 20 west of Burns. On December 29, 2009 at about 7:45 a.m. an Oregon Department of Transportation employee driving along Highway 20 near milepost 116 saw a crashed vehicle off the roadway. Upon checking the crashed vehicle it was discovered a deceased driver was still inside. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers investigating the crash reported a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta driven by ETHAN GORRINGE, age 19, from Boise, Idaho was eastbound negotiating a right-hand curve when it crossed both westbound lanes and left the highway. The vehicle rolled several times and came to rest on top of an embankment off the north highway shoulder. GORRINGE was wearing his safety belt and the car's side airbags deployed. GORRINGE is currently serving in the United States Coast Guard. He was in the process of transferring from his duty station in North Bend, Oregon to a duty station in Virginia. Family members last heard from him Monday evening, December 28th, when he left Bend for Boise, Idaho. Oregon State Police troopers from the Burns Worksite, assisted by an OSP Crash Reconstructionist from Lakeview, is continuing the investigation. Harney County Sheriff's Office, ODOT and Hines Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Fatal
A 66-year old Reedsport man died late Monday night when his car drove off the side of Highway 138W near the Tyee curves northwest of Sutherlin and came to rest on its side in a ditch. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation which may have been caused by a medical problem suffered by the driver, LAURENCE NEAL BURKE, prior to the crash. According to OSP Sergeant Lynn Withers, on December 28, 2009 at approximately 11:20 p.m. a passing motorist spotted a car on its side in a ditch along the westbound shoulder of Highway 138W near milepost 14. OSP, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Fire/EMS, Kellogg Fire Department and ODOT responded to the scene. The lone occupant was found deceased with safety restraints in use. Preliminary investigation indicates the 1991 Mazda Miata was westbound when it traveled into the ditch along the westbound shoulder for about 100 feet before striking a dirt embankment and rocks. The car flipped and landed on its driver side facing eastbound. There were no braking or evasive tire marks on the roadway prior to the crash scene. OSP and the responding Douglas County medical examiner are investigating the possibility that the driver suffered some type of medical problem just prior to the crash.
