Hwy. 101 fatal
A Langlois-area man died Wednesday morning in a single vehicle traffic crash on Highway 101 south of Bandon. Preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police (OSP) indicates alcohol is a possible contributing factor and the victim was not using safety restraints. According to OSP Sergeant John Keeler, on December 30, 2009 at approximately 6:25 a.m. a 1997 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by ROBERT WAYNE AZEVEDO age 34, from Langlois, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 282 when it traveled off the highway and crashed into a tree. After impact, the pickup flipped over onto its top. Approximately ten minutes before the crash, a citizen had reported the pickup being operated by a possible DUII driver. AZEVEDO was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was not using safety restraints. OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office were assisted by Bandon Police Department, Coos County Sheriff's Office, Coos County Medical Examiner, ODOT, Bandon Fire Department, North Bend Towing and Amling & Schroeder Funeral Service. The highway was limited to one lane of travel for approximately 4 hours.

New Year’s Eve
Police agencies in Oregon and around the country are continuing the nationwide crackdown on impaired driving, "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." that started December 16th and runs through the New Year's weekend. In the past decade in Oregon, more than 2,000 individuals were killed and over 26,000 people injured by drinking and drugged drivers. Nationally in 2008, 11,773 people died in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. State, county and city law enforcement agencies are planning enhanced enforcement efforts during the New Year's Holiday period (6:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 30th, through 11:59 p.m., Sunday, January 3rd, 2010). During last year's 102-hour New Year's holiday period, seven people were killed in 5 separate Oregon traffic crashes. According to FARS statistics, during the last ten years over this holiday period an average of more than 5 traffic deaths have occurred. OSP troopers reported more than 50 DUII arrests over last year's New Year's holiday period. During the recent Christmas holiday period, OSP troopers arrested over 60 DUII drivers, up from 50 arrests reported in the 2008 holiday period.

Submerged himself
A 29-year old male was arrested Wednesday afternoon on multiple charges following his attempt to elude in a stolen vehicle and on foot west of Winston. After fleeing on foot the subject reportedly submerged himself in Looking Glass Creek to avoid capture and was arrested about two hours later when Douglas County deputies saw him walking from the search area. On December 30, 2009 at approximately 11:34 a.m. an OSP trooper saw a 1990 Honda Accord two-door eastbound on Highway 42 near Olalla Road and obtained a speed reading of 85 mph in a 55 mph speed zone. The trooper attempted to stop the car, which was later determined to be stolen, as it sped up and attempted to elude toward Winston. The lone occupant stopped west of Old Brockway Road and fled on foot through a field toward Looking Glass Creek. Douglas County deputies and Winston police responded to the area to help search for the driver. After arriving, deputies recognized some stolen property inside the car from several overnight cases they were investigating. During the next two hours, state, county and city police officers searched the area. At about 1:45 p.m. two deputies spotted the driver walking from the area and detained him. THOMAS IVAN GRIMES JR, age 29, from Oakland, was arrested on the following charges: * Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle; * Misdemeanor Attempt to Elude on Foot; * Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle; * Reckless Driving * Warrant issued by the State Parole Board. GRIMES also was cited for Driving While Suspended and Driving Uninsured. Prior to transport to jail, medical personnel responded to evaluate GRIMES because he complained of being cold while submerging himself in the creek to avoid capture. Following the medical evaluation he was lodged in Douglas County Jail.

Sexual abuse
On Tuesday, December 29th, at about 1245 hours, deputies were called to a residence in Tri City to investigate a report of sexual abuse. The victim's mother reported that 16 year old Jesse Malone, who is known to the family, had sexually abused her four year old daughter several times during the past week. The victim was taken to Mercy Hospital where she was given a physical examination and then released back to her mother. Malone was interviewed at the Sheriff's Office by detectives and then arrested. He was lodged at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with five counts of First Degree Sexual Abuse and two counts of First Degree Sodomy.
