No Financial Motivation to Practice Preventive Medicine in U.S.
The present practice of treating disease with pharmaceutical drugs and surgery that is practiced in the U.S. will continue to cause the increase of medical costs which will bankrupt the new Health Plan. Insurance rates will continue to increase and the conflict between the patient and insurance companies will result in dropped coverage. Western medicine is based on making money treating disease. In addition, medical insurance companies are motivated to make as much money as they can to provide extra bonuses to their overpaid CEOs. There is no motivation to practice preventive medicine because there is less money involved. Healthy people don't visit the doctor as often, medical tests are reduced, the use of pharmaceutical drugs are reduced and major surgeries are also reduced.

Walt Edwards, Ph.D. - Dr. Health
Every surgery, even a so-called "minor surgery," is potentially dangerous. Government statistics estimate that 12,000 people die each year from unnecessary operations. Over 100,000 deaths annually are due to the use of prescription drugs. So why do doctors recommend unneeded surgeries? Besides the financial considerations to fill hospital beds and utilize surgical suites, physicians are stuck in the mindset that invasive procedures are the best treatment course for their patients. One of the best examples of this is overuse of bypass surgery and angioplasty. Consumer Reports on Health lists some of the most common needless surgeries: low-back surgery, knee replacement, gallbladder removal, and hysterectomy.
Besides the very costly overuse of prescription drugs and medical tests or screenings, plus the number of incorrect diagnoses and resulting incorrect prescriptions are also very costly. In addition, the use of CT scans and ultrasound or MRIs for "defensive medicine" to avert future lawsuits all contribute to the cost of treating disease that is taught in medical school.
No one appears to be motivated to consider the reduction of medical costs by supporting the concept of reducing the use of the medical system as a means of cutting health costs. Practicing preventive health and getting insurance companies to support preventive health will result in lowering the cost of medicine. Doctors are concerned about using preventive medicine because the AMA does not support preventive health and insurance companies only pay for AMA supported treatment. The number of surgeries can be reduced by having a qualified review board review each case before surgery. Stop the advertising of drugs by the pharmaceutical industry to the general public would reduce the overuse of drugs. These are only some of the cost reducing possibilities that should be considered by Congress. Unfortunately, the need for raising money for their next election results in lobbyists being able to influence the operation and motivation of our law makers.
Diet Hints For Aging
As we age, our metabolisms slow down, which can lead to gaining extra, unwanted pounds. But small dietary adjustments can help minimize weight gain in our middle years. Try these suggestions:
- Eat small meals throughout the day. This encourages steady caloric burn and a consistent metabolism.
- Choose healthy carbohydrates. Replace refined, high-glycemic-index carbs with unrefined, low-glycemic choices. The latter do not cause the spikes in blood glucose levels that encourage the storage of fat.
- Use spices. Capsaicin (the compound that gives chili peppers their bite), black pepper and ginger all boost the generation of heat in the body, leading to more calories burned.
- Drink green tea. The main antioxidant polyphenol in green tea, known as Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, stimulates the body to help burn calories. Dr. Weil recommends drinking a few cups of quality green tea every day.
Warning On The Drug Avandia!
Hundreds of people taking Avandia, a controversial diabetes medicine, needlessly suffer heart attacks and heart failure each month. Confidential government reports say that about 500 heart attacks and 300 cases of heart failure would be averted every month if patients switched away from Avandia. One report, by Dr. David Graham and Dr. Kate Gelperin of the FDA, argued that Avandia should be withdrawn from the market.
How Do You Invent A Disease?
In 1987, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was voted into existence by the American Psychiatric Association and inserted in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Yes, that's right...the "disease" was "voted" into existence. Can you imagine if we had to take a "vote" to determine whether cancer is a disease...or diabetes...or heart disease? That would be patently ludicrous. But every year, more and more disorders are voted into the DSM. In the case of ADHD, psychiatrists made a list of the most common behaviors among children that parents and teachers object to—and then termed them a disease. Within one year, more than half a million children were "diagnosed." Since then, the number of behaviors that constitute the disorder has continued to grow. There are now 18 of them. That opens the door for even more children to be labeled and then put on drugs.
Today, most ADHD "testing" consists of parents, teachers, school administrators, or social workers checking off these behaviors as observed at home and in the classroom. A doctor reviews the checklist, and if six or more of these behaviors are exhibited, then the child is "diagnosed" with ADHD. In almost every case, the treatment is pharmaceutical.
The Latest Concern About Daily Aspirin
Recent research has shed new light on taking daily aspirin to prevent heart attack. Indeed, mounting evidence reported in a number of leading medical journals now suggests that if you're healthy and not at significant risk for a heart attack, you should not be taking aspirin preventively. That's because the studies show that aspirin doesn't reduce the risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke in healthy people. Furthermore, the potential risk of a cerebral hemorrhage, gastrointestinal bleeding, and ulcers outweighs any heart benefits the aspirin might provide. However, if you've already had a heart attack or stroke, or if you have been found by your doctor to be at high or moderate risk for heart attack or stroke, the benefits of taking aspirin can trump the risks. That's because aspirin acts as an anti-inflammatory and an inhibitor of blood clotting. For those at risk, aspirin is one of the drugs many doctors recommend.
The Latest News About What Vitamins Can Do For YOU!
The next time you hear some nay-saying doctor claiming that there is no evidence that vitamins actually do anything, show him this: A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that multivitamins can keep you younger, longer. The study found that those who took a multivitamin daily had 5.1 percent longer telomeres than non-users.
Telomeres are the key to aging. And it's not just your life span that's affected. Short telomeres dramatically boost your risk of serious diseases. One study of 60 to 75 year olds showed those with short telomeres had a 300 percent higher death rate from heart disease and an 800 percent higher death rate from infectious diseases.
