CoQ10 Provides You Another Reason to Smile

About one-third of the US adult population has some degree of gum disease—that's tens of millions of people! It's caused by bacteria in the mouth that leads to inflamed and bleeding gum tissue and then loose teeth. Studies have shown that people with gum disease almost always have low levels of CoQ10.

That's because in order for your gums to heal you need healthy levels of cellular energy and CoQ10 is the substance that energizes your cells. But that's only one of the ways CoQ10 keeps your teeth and gums healthy. It's also a potent antioxidant and immune booster. As early as the 1970s, researchers reported that dosages as low as 50 to 75 mg per day often healed deteriorating gums, sometimes within days.

Since then, dozens of studies have proved its effectiveness in keeping your gums healthy and disease-free. Periodontist Edward Wilkerson says by supplementing patients' diets with CoQ10, he has reversed gum disease in some who would otherwise have lost all their teeth.

Without question, the one supplement to consider and be aware of that's absolutely at the top of my list is CoQ10. I take 200 mg every morning and know its function is to produce energy in every cell in my body, especially my heart.

Here are some other life-saving benefits you get from CoQ10:

While people in their 20s almost always have enough of this essential nutrient, deficiencies are common in people over 40. And that's one of the reasons we start feeling "old" and getting sick.

Here's a great story from Dr. Sears on the "miracle" CoQ10 performed on one of his patients. A retired chorus line dancer came to his clinic for the first time with high blood pressure—even though she was taking two blood pressure medications and a statin drug. She felt constant fatigue and had increased trouble with her memory. When Dr. Sears measured her CoQ10 levels, he found it was 95% lower than most of the population. After taking 200 mg of a CoQ10 supplement daily for two months, she was able to stop both blood pressure medications.

Remarkably, she now maintains a normal blood pressure without medications. She also says she feels "energized for the first time in decades" and reports a sharper memory.

Did you notice that the woman was taking a cholesterol-lowering statin drug? It's part of the reason she was so dangerously depleted of CoQ10. Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs rob you of it. And most doctors don't know, or don't bother telling their patients when they prescribe a statin. Dr. Sears advises people who take statin drugs to supplement with at least 100 mg per day of CoQ10.

Organ meats are the primary food sources of CoQ10. And organ meats from grass-fed beef or wild game are the highest. They contain ten times more CoQ10 than grain-fed animals. But how many people eat these foods? If you're like nearly 100% of the population, you're not getting enough CoQ10 from your diet. That's why a supplement is so important. Whether you take statin drugs or not, consider making CoQ10 a part of your daily nutrition program. It really is the "miracle" nutrient.

What Are The Differences Of Ubiquinone And Ubiquinol (CoQ10)?

Ubiquinone is the fully oxidized form—the form generally sold commercially. Once ingested and absorbed in the body—more than 90% of the ingested Ubiquinone is converted into its "active" antioxidant form called Ubiquinol.

More than 90% of the circulating CoQ10 in our body is present as ubiquinol. The body has reductase enzymes which take the ingested CoQ10 in food and supplements and convert most of it into ubiquinol. This process is reduced as you age and that is one reason for the added supplementation.

Research in animals and humans has shown ubiquinol to be absorbed better than ubiquinone and it costs more. Therefore, ubiquinol might afford an advantage over ubiquinone in individuals who do not absorb regular CoQ10 from supplements too well. Be sure to take CoQ10 with some kind of fat food to ensure best absorption.

Have You Ever Heard Of Ketasyn And MCTs?

Dr. Newport began researching new medications and clinical trials in which to enroll her husband Steve. That's when she came across a drug called Ketasyn that showed significant improvement over a 90-day period in half of the Alzheimer's patients studied with a certain genetic profile. The main ingredient in Ketasyn are MCTs, which are Medium Chain Triglycerides that are abundant in coconut oil. Coconut oil is about 60 percent MCTs by weight.

Steve's cognition was leaning more toward severe than moderate AD. Knowing that coconut oil could provide the same MCTs as Ketasyn, Dr. Newport went to a health food store and bought a quart of 100% virgin coconut oil. The following morning at 9 am, she made oatmeal for Steve and herself, stirring in over 2 tablespoons of the coconut oil in each serving. At 1 pm, she took Steve to a second screening for a clinical trial that would be testing a new Alzheimer's vaccine. The previous day, he had scored too low (14) on the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) to be considered as a test subject.

But now, only 4 hours after taking the coconut oil, Steve scored an 18 on the same test and qualified for the study. (After evaluating the possible side effects of the vaccine, Dr. Newport decided not to enroll her husband.)

According to Dr. Newport, "It was like the oil kicked in and he could think clearly again. We were ecstatic." On the fifth day of taking the coconut oil, she saw significant improvement in his personality and cognition. And now months later, Steve can read again, the tremors he had have disappeared, and he's more interested in life and the people around him.

Thought For The Day: Many cultures (and some open-minded people) believe in karma and reincarnation. I am not sure if it exists or not, but it sure seems to explain the differences and seeming injustices in this world. Or, simply put, doing to others as you wish to be done to you—reaping what you sow—both in this lifetime and potentially in future lifetimes seems to answer the question of "Why are we here?". In the meantime, my best advice is to live your life as though you believe that karma is a reality. Or, to put it in more secular, pragmatic terms, to live every moment as though the whole world were watching!
