Vote
With a voter turnout of nearly 65%, Coos County’s registered voters said no to two state wide measures aimed at increasing taxes on upper level Household Incomes and Corporations. However, statewide, voters approved raising taxes on Corporations and those with higher incomes through Ballot Measure 66 and Ballot Measure 67. The two, approved by Legislators, were passing at 54% and 53% with 91% of the ballots counted late Tuesday night. According to unofficial final returns from the Election Dept. at the Courthouse in Coquille, Measure 66 failed locally with voters saying No 11,805 (52.68%) to 10,605 (47.32%). Measure 67’s vote was No 12,001 (53.43%) to the Yes vote’s 10,459 (46.57%). Out of the county’s 34,953 registered voters, 22,567 participated in the election.
Moore sentenced
A 44-year old North Bend male, convicted of a teenage girl, will not be eligible for parole until he is 80-years of age following sentencing by a Coos County Circuit Court Judge Tuesday in Coquille. Kenneth Everett Moore was arrested last May on charges of Rape, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Felony Attempt to Elude a Police Officer, Reckless Driving, and 27-counts of Violation of a Restraining Order. His sentence totaled 425-months. District Attorney R. Paul Frasier says he also decided to not pursue additional charges related to accusations that Moore allegedly attempted to hire a jail inmate to murder or assault potential witnesses in the rape cases. “Given that Mr. Moore will be serving 35 years in prison and will be nearly 80 years of age when eligible to be released, I have decided that rather than expend taxpayer resources on pursing those charges that the above charges will be dismissed without prejudice.”
College Board clears way for donation of land for new Curry Campus
The Southwestern Oregon Community College Board of Education tackled the final hurdle Monday night in the long process of securing the donation of land for a new Curry Campus. The Board was asked to accept the deed from U. S. Borax (subsidiary of Rio Tinto) for approximately 10 acres of land on the Lone Ranch Development in Brookings for the purpose of building the new Curry Campus and to delegate signing authority on the deed to the college president, Dr. Patty Scott. The deed to the property needs to be signed by a representative of the college and the college president does not have the authority to accept deeds without the Board’s approval. The Board voted unanimously in approval of the resolution. The college had already been searching extensively for an appropriate location for a campus when discussions between the college and U. S. Borax regarding the land began in 2001. US Borax’s Lone Ranch site Master Plan was approved on October 11, 2004. The college’s Detailed Development Plan for the new campus was approved on September 1, 2009. Once the deed has been signed by the college, all that remains is that U.S. Borax transmit it to the title company for issuance of title insurance. The land is being given to Southwestern for the new Curry Campus development. Under the agreement, the land must be used for instructional purposes. The college already has a commitment of $2.3 million from the state and has received support from both Curry and Coos counties through its Curry Campus Campaign. Southwestern will celebrate the transfer of the deed for the future site of the new Curry Campus on February 4, 2:30 p.m., at the current Brookings Campus (420 Alder St.). Information about the project, including a link to donate to the campaign, can be found at www.socc.edu/curry.
ConnectOregon
A California group’s application for a grant of $13.4 million from the ConnectOregon infrastructure grant progam has been turned down. The group formed by the cities of Weed and Montague, CA requested the funds to purchase an 80-mile section of the Siskiyou Summit line owned by Central Oregon Pacific & Railroad (CORP). However, the Oregon Department of Transportation development division ruled that the application by the Siskiyou Regional Railroad Authority did not meet their feasibility criteria. The group has 30-days to appeal the decision. Another investment group, headed up by lumber producers in Southern Oregon, has petitioned the U.S. Surface Transportation Board to purchase the line from Roseburg into Northern California because of curtailed service by CORP.
